Playstation 5 user playing in exiled lands, server 3829.
Yesterday at approximately 1pm pst, the whole server went down and did not return until approximately 7am this morning. Upon logging in, I see that my character + the world state has been reverted to something 6-8 hours before the shutdown.
This is frustrating and unacceptable. People play on official to avoid this type of BS. Can we please at least get some visibility as to what happened? You have a login message that could be utilized to communicate issues on specific servers, but nah.
I continue to play this game because there’s indeed a beautiful experience mired beneath the developmental neglect. But my gosh, you can only reliably abuse a loyal fanbase for so long
Unlike the Nemedian foundation issue you’re discussing, this rollback hasn’t been acknowledged nor has a reason been given for the issue. While the former is awful and I feel for everyone who did lose their progress, it wasn’t left up to mystery. Just because something worse happened to someone else doesn’t mean anyone who experiences something “less bad” should ignore it. (This is also an official server so it’s highly likely that some of the same people impacted by the Nemedian issue have now experienced a rollback, perhaps losing work towards replacing the damage done by the first).
That said, I have a private server. G-Portal recently moved my server from one bit of hardware to another. I’m sure other servers have been migrated as well, date range for migration between august 2 and august 20, though which ones and when each would be moved would only be known by whoever the server owner was that got the email. It wasn’t supposed to affect playtime/save progress (per the email I received) but things can go wrong. I wonder if something like this might have caused your issue as well.
What happened is the safeties kicked in and prevented an entire server wipe for the server.
Every 5 minutes a server saves a backup. Depending on the setting, the server will keep these back ups to a certain number. Depending on the provider of the server (G-Portal, ServerBlend, GTX Gaming, etc.) they may also keep some of these backups in another location.
When a server crashes, you try reloading the server. If it won’t come online, you load 5 minutes back from the crash. If it still doesn’t come up, you go back another 5 minutes. Keep doing this till you get a backup save that will come on. Whatever caused the crash happened 6 hours before the crash happened and prevented loading the save.
To put it shortly, the game is working as intended. Otherwise you’d be looking at a wipe of everything, not just six hours.
Is this acceptable? Well… that’s an interesting question. The type of game that Conan Exiles is, this is the standard. You have a 3rd party server host, and one file that holds all the map and characters. It makes the game incredibly easy to deploy for people running their own servers.
Its not an MMORPG that has a few dozen files, and programs that have to run and talk to each other and dozens of failsafes. A player wouldn’t be able to easily run their own server either by themselves on their own machine, or by a 3rd party host. That’s the tradeoff.
