Massive FPS Drop

[Inexplicable FPS Drop]

Please provide a step-by-step process of how the bug can be reproduced. The more details you provide us with the easier it will be for us to find and fix the bug:

  1. Start game in single player with no mods in Windowed mode with Ultra settings
  2. What used to be 50-60 FPS is not 5-15 FPS (with 8-9 FPS average)

Specs:
Intel i7-7800X 6 Cores @3500Mhz
32GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti
Win 10 Pro

Steps Taken to Address Issue:

  1. Dusted outside and inside
  2. Factory reset – reinstalled everything
  3. GPU drivers are up to date
  4. Windows 10 is up to date
  5. No malware detected
  6. CPU cooling/temp, load, and clock all seem good
  7. Memory is sufficient – 32 Gb RAM
  8. No battery draining issue – the desktop stays pugged in
  9. Internet connection stable
  10. GPU runs full load (100%) with temp around 90 C (a bit warm but reasonable)
  11. Had computer in repair shop for a week checking components; everything checked out

This type of issue was reported back in October 2019 and fixes were made to the game; has the issue returned? Is there some optimization that needs to be adjusted?

I can drop graphics settings to get a 30-40 FPS out of it (full screen mode, low or medium graphic settings, dropping Vsync), but it no longer runs Ultra settings like it used to. I have over 3600 hours into this game over the past few years so believe me when I say that I used to be able to run Ultra settings just fine. I just don’t know what’s happened to cause this massive fps drop.

Any assistance, or even explanation, would be appreciated.

I am not sure if you are the same person who came to our discord even though the specs and issue sound very similar. Here is my experience on ultra settings on a private server which leads me to believe that it is something specific to your setup or at least it is not something observed by all users. I even performed the test in the storm which is known to cause some performance drop:

If you are not the same person, then this is some additional information provided by the user who had a similar problem:

  • CE tested in the repair shop and the user reported that when they tested the game there, it ran fine (47-60 FPS).

As the user reported that this happens at their home but not at the repair shop, this leads us to believe that it is something related to what they have at home but not at the repair shop. We suggested the following:

  • To check vsync, gsync, fullscreen optimizations (the user reported that they have a 4k monitor) and to check their GPU power usage.
  • To check their power supply connections (cable/socket).
  • To start a new save to see whether the issue persists. It could be something related to the save or the server.
  • To check whether anything changes with better airflow due to their PC location as the reported thermal throttle point for GTX 1080Ti is 84C.

Hope others can provide some further feedback on this issue.
