New Journey Steps are Nice, But Story Needs Patching

Title says it all, really. The new Journey system is very fun, but I’m worried that newer players will miss out on some of the lore behind the Exiled Lands without the old Journey steps. For instance, Telith’s Island, for instance, has been missing a singing ghost referenced by an old Journey step. While the ghost itself has been missing since before I played, the step’s text at least introduced the characters of Telith and Tyros. The exploratory, environmental storytelling style of EL’s lore is cool, and could ultimately be helped by replacing these old Journey steps with in-game material (or replacing supposedly missing in-game material, like Telith’s song?), but without these elements in place we lose some of the ties between locations and lore.

Some other examples:

  • The Mounds of the Dead as the location of a large battle, linking with the Barrow King
  • Frost Giant Temple as a secret Black Ice forge

I haven’t had a lot of time to explore the new Journey steps, so it’s possible that even finding things like the Palace of the Witch Queen might be a bit more difficult, as well, regardless of the exposition provided by the old Journey steps.

I think much of the story has been getting a bit of an overhaul. Like for example, the mummy of the ring has been outright retconned.

Oh, really? Now that you mention it I suppose it was only mentioned in the Journey, and not by the Archivist or Mekamoses…

This one is concerned that rather than completing the story as previously presented, it is just going to be reconned out of the game. Leaving unconnected bits of ruins with less connective tissue than a Dark Souls game.
Rather than fighting the Mummy of the Ring, much like the crossbow, it will simply be deleted from admin panel spawnables and be ignored moving forward.

The Mummy has been retconned for years now. The story around that has been altered and many of the bits replaced.

Yes, but the point stands that this one does not want, years from now, to be looking back at a growing field of plot points that were abandoned and then retconed.

Also, how many years ago was that journey step removed, this one forgets?
