Official Servers - What do you think?

Gameservers. They took us through April 2017 right up through Climbing Patch and Partial Wipe. At that point we only had 50 levels, and fewer perks and such, so we lost all inventory, structures, recipes (such as they were then) and attributes. One minute I’m running down the Pirate River in full Heavy, the next I’m waking up nekked in croc country, struggling to find food before I die. Times were tough.

We had so many new players come on for Frozen North, it was incredible. I made a lot of friends there and then, and a lot of them simply dropped off. Tons of glitches and disconnects, loads of banding and lags, all attributable to the host. It was a fiasco.

Personally, if it were structured properly, I could see Funcom hosting proper tournaments and potentially making a bit of money on the gig.

The trick is letting people sandbox. It should be able to pay for itself. My business opinion.

Yes. official servers are important, in fact, if i play i would only play on officials.

One big advantange is that they don’t wipe, so you can keep your character
without killing 854181451 monkeys to be 60 again (that was the old way xD)

and i want to declare my hate for the private PVP servers (no idea about pve ones)
We don’t want to play in privates because simply put, they do not adjust to our intented gameplay.
Reason # 1 Admin abuse.
Reason # 2 Random rules

Thats it. thats enough reason for us to not play ANY private server EVER again.

just one quick story about the many bad experiences we had in privates:

We were building a massive FoB on some stairs the day before we were going to attack a base, we farmed for like 1 week and we were going to melt a base.

After we finished with the FoB that we builded with a considerable effort (this was around 4 or 5 AM) the admin shows up, we proudly present it, and it was all okay.
except for a random rule that said “you cannot block a passage” and it was literally a simple stair that ONLY leads to south aqueduct (were the enemy base was located) is not like we were griefing or anything, it was JUST A FREAKING STAIR. and the only way it would lead would be the enemy base!!
it wasn’t really blocking entirely because there was other ways to get to it, you would just need to climb a little.

can you just, use ur common sense for a little. and it is even more infuriating because even if it was true that we were blocking a “passage” we would DENYING THE ENEMY a clear way to get reinforcements.
So we cannot even weaponize the enviroment.

So we ended up moving the ENTIRE FoB just literally 10 foundations to the left and we spend 4 HOURS because the admin decided to be a little ***** so we had to delay our sleep hours and prepare for the attack with a less rested mind for a STUPID rule that wasn’t going to change anything because the FoB was going to be removed after the attack regardless of the outcome of the raid.

i have many, many other stories on why privates SUCK.

and another thing, after i enter a private server and the first thing i see is a rule that says
“you cannot use this weapon” i roll my eyes
is like going to war an ban ak47 and force you to use a knife

but in fact it did lead me to try to get my own private with the same rules of officials. with the big difference is that the admin would have a brain and if i find you cheating in any way, you will get banned instantly.

undermesh, fly bases, and hackers are currently and always have been the biggest problems on officials Not sure about how is the report meta.

And currently a friend showed me a new one: Duping. i have seen how you can dupe and i am honestly horrified that still wasn’t fixed AND YES I REPORTED because if i wanted to cheat, i would, but thats BORING.

Good day kiki, i hope that we left our old rivalries when we had our war, and i apology again in the name of my clan for the behavior of some of our members. i see that you are still passionate about the game, i also want to see it improve : p and want to see a better state on officials.
Sadly, it seems like the game is going more to a pve directions, and the pvp community is going to be smaller and smaller. we are not the intended audience :frowning:

This is so accurate and true! But be sure that even if they decide to fix different servers for veterans and new players, the veterans will create new users to go and troll the new players.
Long ago two ideas were dropped here. The one was speaking about a flag system and the other of making walls unbreakable and only doors break able! The flag system is similar to the treasury system and guess what, purge works only with doors.
Without speaking with prophecies, yet i see the game is leading there. People will loose a lot but not all. Maybe this will bring a change after all and new players will find reason to stay. Total wipe only lead to frustration and disappointment and lead many people on cheating just for revenge or survival to an uneven territory .
But that’s just a theory, nothing else, probably i am wrong.

My input for officials is they have to exist for a better dlc (now bazaar) revenue stream. For PC especially. If only privates existed, then modders on PC can (and are) doing a great job of adding varying content. For consoles, on the other hand, the lack of capable admin UI would make all privates relatively the same. By having officials, it creates a playerbase more inclined to buy bazaar/DLC for added variety (at least percieved variety).

All private servers are not the same. Ours has been going since ps4 hit the game
Because you could not find your body on official servers. Basically a learning server. 2 rules you might have a problem with clan name and no racist names otherwise they are on their own rarely play on it will test new purge when it comes and go back to official. Not all private server owners are colcoa. @Ethel

i was speaking settings wise. There are way to few settings to aklow consoles a grue variety. This is not a slight the owners of privates. This is a critque of FC giving them admin UI. Pippi on PC gives heat tracking of clan builds, adding merchant. FC gave sliders, thats all.

Yes Official servers are important. I am le poor. :weary:

That said, I do not play on private servers period. It usually turns into the cons you listed.

Active Admins per server would help. Someone always builds some monolith that kicks you off into oblivion. Bonus points if it throws me into the green wall. Because the build rules are loosy goosy I’m constantly tearing down and rebuilding.

Was it a whole weapon type, like no spears, or a specific weapon?

I remember some servers banning the plundering weapons (Set’s Tongue and Mitra’s Justice) because it basically invalidated all buffs. Understandable IMO, to each their own on this one.

But if it was like “muh, no daggers :frowning: then yeah that’s stupid :notlikethis:

This is a recurrent issue in gaming, known as “smurfing”.

In competitive PvP games, I have seen so many High-Rank players make fresh accounts repeatedly just to stomp Low-Rank players… And it is just boring, I don’t know how one can find this fun at all :man_facepalming:

The majority of the privates I played had a few weapon restrictions but nothing severe like a ban of entire weapon type.
The majority ban plundering weapons because, as you said, those invalidate buffs but also invalidate poison as a mechanic in combat because players can have infinite and almost weightless antidotes on their hot bar. (That players often used mid-roll to skip equip animation.)
Another quite popular ban for it time was the removal of the original Jhebbal Prowl due to the strength of the bleeding during that period.
The most recent and still going bans are ban of harpy weapons aka mainly harpy spear due to you know what effect Funcom didn’t list in the item’s description.

Damn with this forum, i learn so many things in here and finally i’ll become trendy .
Thanks a million m8. I stumble so many times in this word but i was ashamed to ask. The only smurfs i know are the blue ones. I remember in fifth grade, i wanted to stop my English private lessons because the smurfs were playing on tv exactly the hours i had lessons and we didn’t had video yet to record them so i can see them after :rofl::rofl:. Omg, thanks @SpherisCore and apologies to @Kikigirl for my off topic contribution here.

I believe the plural of smurf is “smurve.” :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

This fills my heart with barbarian joy. War and rivalries and passion. That’s why Official PvP Servers are essential.

Of course there is a F-ing name for it. Why not?

@erjoh

On the topic of exploits:

Lag switching/Traffic limiting is still a problem on all platforms today in 2023.(yes even on consoles as a spare PC can act as a specialized router) I see it in action all the time and have verified through testing that it still works. The best armor in the game is a fine tuned traffic limiter that slows udp traffic for a time to whatever server you’re on. Especially when you slow inbound traffic but keep outbound traffic. Pair this with a special script and foot pedal device and you’re set. Hit last stand? Switch on, wind up for combo, switch off, kill, repeat.( Have a glitched 1 hit mace? Bonus)

This method can also be used to build sky bases, occasionally dupe and other things with fine tuning.

I just don’t understand how after all these years server/client net code hasn’t improved. Exploiting has killed the player base and this is one of the major ones that was a problem from the start.

Edit: Flagging this post isn’t going to change the reality of exploits I describe. There’s no reason to hide this. I’m not handing out specific technical settings for rate limits, I’m just letting the community know what’s really happening on pvp servers.

Funcom say they are a courtesy, they are to showcase the game. Well if they are to showcase the game in that servers, they are risking that new players will get a very bad impression of the game. Maybe conan is not expecting much more new poeple, but theres is a new FC game in the oven, and it can afect peoples decision based on the experiences they had in conan.

I play on Official Servers, because, for better or worse, I know what to expect when I log on to one of them without too much additional effort.

I think many of the actions/decisions from Funcom are more about managing our perceptions of how issues are handled than actually handling them properly.

After putting in 2000 or so hours with this game, I can say it is one of the best, and worst games I have ever played.

Funcom’s track record with the myriad issues this game has had over time do not give me a lot of confidence that future projects will be much different than the experience with this one.

Agreeing with you here. Although I’ve seen Officials referenced as only a courtesy, which doesn’t make sense to me.

Goes back to what I’d written that it is an expectation to have Official modes of play. All online games offer it to some degree.

For both they can but probably won’t have a great time. Is it a quick and easy way to learn? Tragically so, if they’re receptive of course.

Agree with you to a point. I don’t use exploits, I keep informed of them and report them, but I want to be fair. Kinda ties in with the Lord of the Flies reference above… most are not like that though.

When they weren’t marketing this game as a Service, it could be considered a courtesy.
Once it got billed as a live service product (around about the 10cent buy out announcement), it went from a courtesy to an expectation.
