Pets not gaining exp

Me and my friends just started a new server so we could learn the game. We went up north captured a few bears and at first they were gaining exp. But now for some random reason the pets wont gain exp even tho one is level 15 and the other is 3. We have no idea whats causing it. Can anyone help explain why it happened.The server keep getting this error.

Only pets set to follow gain exp.

Otherwise, if you are using mods that could affect exp gains, check with the mod authors.

So we discovered what it was there are 2 follows in the radial menu a green one and a normal follow we were using the green one which apparently make it so they arnt following you but are. Thank you for the follow thing those made us really check the follow
