(possible) Odd cause for the 0x887a0006 - 'HUNG' fatal Error

A player on my server started getting the '0x887a0006 - ‘HUNG’ error after Reinstalling the game on a new pc. Their machine is fully capable of running the game on High (Ryzen 7 + GTX 1070 +16gb ddr4). There is NO onboard video or second monitor.

After a couple hours of trouble shooting and scouring every corner of these forums and reddit for solutions (If you have to ask if i’ve tried it, then the answer is yes), I believe I have narrowed down the cause of the crash: Weather effects AND fullscreen/ Windowed fullscreen mode.
After an hour or two we noticed that the player only crashed during Weather effects (Rain, sandstorms, Blizzards, and the like.)
Running the game in windowed-fullscreen slightly lessened the crashes, but they still came with the weather

The player was able to play for over an hour with no crashing after changing to windowed mode. The second they tried going back to fullscreen or windowed fullscreen DURING weather effects , the crashing came back.

These crashes seem to only occur, to this player at least, during times of bad weather when the game is NOT in windowed mode

Swapping to Fullscreen or Windowed Fullscreen with no weather effects does NOT cause crashing.

EDIT: after trying this with another person from a different server with the same crash and resolving it, I can say that Weather effects not liking full-screen mode seem to be the culprit here.

Double Edit: The player I was originally helping Messaged my while I was away and said that It still does crash, but only every 2 or 3 weather cycles (about every 1 1/2 hours). Weather has been disables I will will report back in a couple hours.

Edit # 3 : Weather definitely seems to be the issue. played for 4 hours with not a single crash, then toggled a rainstorm and the player crashed instantly.

Please provide a step-by-step process of how the bug can be reproduced. The more details you provide us with the easier it will be for us to find and fix the bug:

  1. load game
  2. Log onto server
  3. Toggle weather effects While in fullscreen of windowed fullscreen mode
  4. Crash

Thank you for the detailed report.
You mention this is happening in a private server. Are there any mods installed? The reason we mention this is that there’s been no similar reports coming about this and there’s a slight chance your findings could be caused by some mod configuration.
Please let us know if that is the case :slight_smile:

This is an unmodded vanilla server.

EDIT: The player has told me they No client-side mods installed or subbed to via workshop

I cant speak for every report regarding this error, but it can be easy to miss seemingly unimportant/unrelated details (like weather) that could be causing the error, and it doesn’t get considered when making the initial report.

Note: Should mention that by “disabling weather”, I mean sandstorms are ticked off and I manually change “Set Weather Severity” to 0 whenever the player is on. We’re in the same timezone and are generally on at the same time so its that that much a hassle.

Thanks for the confirmation. Could you let us know the system specs of the systems that have experienced these crashes? Also, whenever the crash report window pops up when crashing, please make sure to submit it. This way our systems get a hold of the crash logs as well :slight_smile:

Would be interesting to monitor in deep these systems crashing with similar errors.
May be related to some drivers not supported by specific configuration. Did you try roll-back, or set-up different drivers, for your gpu, but also check if all your drivers are up-to-date, and all perifs are working like intended.

Windows can also do very nasty things sometimes. :crazy_face:

After testing with A small group who get this error and with admins from other private servers, I can say with 99% certainty that this crash is weather-related. does not matter what server the group was on (still vanilla unmodded), as soon as weather effects kick in they all CTD with the error.

I’ll work on getting system info + crash logs as these player come online.
