Purge Bug: Thralls in cages hit by exploding golem heads bug out with 'Empty' message and cant be saved

Game Mode: Online Official
Server Type: PvE-Conflict
Map: Exiled Lands
Mods: None

Bug Description:
During a purge, if an exploding golem head damages any caged thrall in the enemy encampment, the thrall becomes bugged and the cage says ‘Empty’ when attempting to open it. The thrall inside cannot be interacted with and remains in a ‘returning home’ status till next server reset, once the enemy encampment despawns.

Bug Reproduction:

  1. Start a purge T8-T10.
  2. Kill exploding golems until a head rolls near a thrall cage in enemy base and explodes.
  3. Once purge has been won, cages/thralls which took explosion damage, with an obvious thrall inside will say ‘Empty’ when trying to open.
  4. Once enemy base despawns, bugged thralls cannot be interacted with and stay in status ‘Returning Home’ until server reset.

Interesting, were you able to test without explosions?

Most players use explosive arrows either on guarding thralls or on their player character so what you’re saying it might extend to all explosions?

I’ll test damage from my effects gas arrows, exploding etc. My gut feel from doing a few hundred purges is my damage isnt affecting it.

I assumed this was a well-known bug. It’s been around ever since the new purge system, even before golems in the purge.
Poison gas arrow clouds can also bug out the thralls in cages. It’s been a rule in my clan ever since we started doing on-demand purges: keep the poison gas arrows well away from the cages.

Honestly with all the things wrong with this game IMHO this is low priority.
The simple workaround: don’t shoot AOE arrows at/beside the cages and don’t blow up the golems there.

btw, Golems appear in levels 6-10. It’s worth putting some low fence foundation out in front of your purge entrance for them. If they are low enough the golems won’t be able to hit it, stalling them and giving you a controllable kill area (hopefully) away from the cages.

It’s an old bug, thanks for bringing it back again. Do know that when i report it about a year ago the Community wrapped my report and send it to devs. Of course it doesn’t happen so often anymore and back then even on a lvl 10 purge without any golem this could happen. But we will test this weekend with @LostBrythunian the golem part that you mentioned, we will try to kill as many as possible close to the cages, hopefully we can kick these golems to where we wish.
I really hope you are right fellow exile because “it’s empty” note is really frustrating.

It does track with our own previous experiences.

This one now wonders if anything else can effectively destroy the thrall in the cage before opening?

That’s why i needed you in here the most brother, i was not so sure so two minds are better than one.
But what puzzles me is that we had experience “it’s empty” while nothing actually could happen to affect it and we were scratching heads .
Or maybe i am mistaken, any help of reminding is very precious brother.

I’ve hit this same bug—caged thralls go “Empty” after being near an exploding golem head during a Purge. Reloading the server didn’t fix it, and they’re unrecoverable. For now, I avoid placing cages near likely blast zones. Hopefully Funcom patches this soon, since it’s a rough loss after a successful capture. Would be great to at least recover the follower.
