I play PS4 on official server.
How do you know if you have a purge crafting thrall? Is there a special symbol or anything?

Your best bet is to use the wiki and look up their name on there to see if it only spawns during a purge.

Ever since the wild surges were removed, this achievement has not been able to be unlocked. Although I have seen players unlock this on their steam profiles. What is the new method to unlocking this? It’s not by summoning a surge at the leyshrine then defeating them.
Looking up on wiki like Wak said is pretty much easy way.
