I cannot answer why they removed it , i can only assume, but it was removed when age of sorcery landed.
That’s RNG. You just have to grind for it wherever salamanders spawn. But if nothing has changed they are nothing special.
Asking for a buff wouldn’t be bad , but generally pets are only decorative cool looking followers. The only “pet” i find useful in game is the camel and just because it’s carrying capacity and huge hp .
Pets need a revamp, no doubt about it .
I don’t know if there’s a salamander model in the game, but if you mean those big iguana like lizards that spit poison, there is a good spot for getting those pets in the jungle.
Yeah, those will be the ones - for some reason the game refers to them as salamanders - despite the fact that they are clearly iguanas (so, not even the same taxonomic Class, let alone Order or Species - salamanders being amphibians not reptiles…).
It was an aesthetic reason as sorcery revamped necromancy from an alchemy bench crafting to an actual raising the dead
The spawn percentage of the fledglings is still messed up and it is one of the creatures that does NOT have a 100% spawn point. If you get one, feel proud. If it becomes an greater version, buy a lotto ticket
Their not in comparison. The only one I know that truly is underwhelming to the point of big is the lion. No pet will replace a human thrall. That is just a design thing.

A server administrator once gave me an ostrich enhanced with console commands. As far as I remember, his health was 50,000, and all other characteristics were also raised.
But he turned out to be such a bad fighter that after watching him fight the crocodile boss, I decided that I didn’t have that much time. He doesn’t have a sword instead of a beak.
I used it as a decoration and then gave it to a friend, she placed it with her camels. 
I once had a completely ordinary ostrich pet called Phil. He was great without any cheats or boosts. He once pecked a wolf to death (Ok - actually he spent quite a long time slowly pecking it down to about half health and then I got bored and killed it for him, but he tried…)
