Rendering - Highland trees have always-enabled psuedo-lighting shader

For some odd reason, the trees in the highland biome have this horrible psuedo-lighting shader on top of being illuminated by the game’s actual lights. This has been used in more recent games for characters, with it being called character lighting in their settings.

It looks terrible, and just drains performance. There’s no reason to use it at all. Worse still, it gets more intense the greater the viewing angle.

The best part? It’s only applied on trees nearby, so the lower detail tree models actually look much better as they don’t have the awful shader applied to them.

It’s horrid. If people actually like it, please make it toggleable at the very least.

Please provide a step-by-step process of how the bug can be reproduced. The more details you provide us with the easier it will be for us to find and fix the bug:

  1. Go to the highland biome (between desert and frozen north)

  2. Approach any tree

  3. Rotate the camera. The tree will be constantly illuminated at an angle opposite the player’s direction.

  4. Note that distant trees don’t have the shader applied
