Returning player with question about thralls

I haven’t played for quite awhile.

I’m playing online PVE on XBSX/PS5.

I see that you no longer place thralls directly into a workbench to have them work it.

From what I’ve been told, you just place the thrall down and they’ll wander around and work at benches as needed. I have a couple of questions.

  1. Does this mean that all of the thralls are just generic, no smelter, carpenter etc? Because all of my thralls are all still labeled with a speciality.

  2. I placed down a thrall but it just stands in 1 place, like it’s guarding, it doesn’t wander around. What am I missing here?

Thanks so much.

They require water source camp fire and bed and I believe a chair They will show up in your benches e even if not present. @SirGreenDay you need your various crafters .

Welcome back sir!

No.
The crafters remain crafters but they are alive in your house now. They will wander around but your sleep, eat, etc, yet your benches will have the bonuses of their duty, even if they don’t animate constantly in their bench.
The good part is that you no longer need 5 alchemists for each bench. Now only one alchemist will grand you automatically bonuses to all the alchemy related benches and the fermentation barel too.
Another bonus of this situation is that your crafter is a follower too. You can gear your crafter and help you on your fighting missions.

Fighters, dancers, bearers, archers, are still the same as before, their behavior haven’t changed at all, except…
If you feel that your working stations are empty now, you can place your fighters on your benches and they will do animation that they are working on it.

Have fun and welcome back sir Green

He didn’t mean it this way. In order to see them doing more e motes and have alive base, it’s good to have all these that @sestus2009 said. They even stop on mannequins to watch the armor pieces on them, or on fountains. I love how they lean on storage big crates.

Something I just noticed.

I’m playing on the PS5 and the XBSX.

On the PS5, I have an option to “Disable Thrall use” on the workstations, but on the XBSX, I don’t see that option.

Also, before I knew how the new thrall system works, in order to get the thralls to work at the workstations, I chose “Stand and guard” and just placed the thrall in the green silhouette at the workstations and that worked.

Now that I know that these thralls can wander around etc, how do I place the thralls that are in my workstations into the world so that they will do this?

The only option I have is “Stand and guard” and if I use that they just stand in one spot.

Thanks again. You guys are awesome.

Also, they will open your doors and sometimes wander off and die.

That disable thrall use on workstations was added via a hotfix not long after AoH launched. Xbox never received the hotfix, hence why it’s missing.

I have them all standing in a locked room without doors for 10 days now and not lost a single one anymore and my doors stay closed.
Before that, i had to replace some daily

So, the solution is the Cask of Amontillado.
Glad it has worked for you.

This one has had issues where some of them occasionally teleport out of any attempted oubliettes.

i was scared about that and count them every day

It is easier to simply set “Disable Thrall Use” on everything (don’t forget campfires, wells, barrels, braziers, etc!). Placing them in a doorless box does not work 100% - they may still path out through the walls under certain circumstances.

By disabling thrall use on all benches they will stay exactly where you place them with zero chance of disappearing and dying. This also effectively disables the “Living Settlements” update – but IMO this is the lesser evil compared to having to replace $$$ thralls like Bladesmiths and Bowyers every day or two when they mysteriously die.

I’ve been doing this since a week or so after the update and have lost no thralls. Friends who have tried other methods still lose them now and then, and losing a Bladesmith sucks - especially now when competition for them is at an all-time high.

I have them in a doorless room for 2 weeks now and not disabled anything and they stay put. I count them every day and haven’t lost a single one since then.
In a fully decorated base it is almost impossible to disable everything.
What I find most amazing, is, that due to the unwillingness of FC to admit that they messed up big time and flipping the living settlements switch to off on officials, we are here discussing workarounds and people are still loosing thralls

There may be other factors at play here.

For example, at Mounds of the Dead I have a thrall in a 1x1 cube and he stays put.
At another base on a high pillar, I tried the same: putting thralls in a 2x6 hut with no doors (no roof though), specifically designed to hold them, and I came back to them somehow having escaped and milling around my base. I went the “Disable Thrall Use” route because it seemed the most foolproof. It also lets me put those thralls to use as base/purge defense.

Perhaps we can narrow down why yours are staying put, and it would help others build containment rooms for them. Can we get a screenshot of your room, or more details? Room size, height, material? Did you build the roof before placing thralls? Proximity to stations, etc?

Thralls escaping/disappearing/dying is obviously still a problem since if you go to 0,0,0 on EL there is always a stack of them there.

i just simply walled off a part of the third floor in my main base. There is anotzher floor above and floors below it

Interesting… and they don’t come out of there? I built something similar with a 1-wall height barrier and they simply ignored the walls and were all over my base.

I guess if someone does this they should test to make sure that thralls stay in, because there seem to be some other buggy aspects at play.

they haven’t moved an inch in 2 weeks
things come to mind:
different building set
that there are floors below and above it
that it isnt ground floor

I’ve been trying to recreate whatever causes the crafters to die or port to 0.0.0. on pc and so far cannot. I’m doing nothing to try and prevent it like disabling thralls use on things, etc.

Numerous crafters placed at five different bases on different servers. Three official, two private. Got signs at each base with the number of thralls placed at that base written on them so I don’t forget.

My only loss so far appears to have died to a nearby mob spawn. Hasn’t happened again since I blocked said spawn anyway. Event log just said he died. (2) Makes it hard to know.

I see the crafters at 0.0.0 all the time however and people are having thralls die daily. It’s very odd stuff.

here is an update
after server restart, 6 of the 11 thralls in the room, were walking around the base
didn’t loose any but had to catch them and put them back in the room
no idea about what made them suddenly move after 2 weeks
