But isn’t that judging morality based solely on the input of the wealthy and powerful? Would you be so quick to say that today’s world is one where 8 billion people are just greedy exploiters looking for only 5 year gains with no foresight or concerns over the effects towards others and the environment they live on?
Yes morality changes but at the same time, there is too much similarities between then and now. You have people willing to do anything to get ahead, including vile things in both today and yester years. Wouldn’t it stand to reason that there were an equal percentage of folks that were that way back the as it is today?
people have ask for settlement system for years and everything is not around mods, and if we not getting the settlement system how can mods creators make their mod better with thralls. and console players dont have access to what we PC players have so its good console players can get access to settlement system without using a mod becuse they cannot use mod
Then it should be pretty easy to find links to these requests, right?
I read these forums all the time and have for years no one has asked for this.
I wager there have been hundreds that have asked for an over haul of the server moderation system.
Every time some on mentions new skins for the draw bridge it gets a lot of support.
Being able to dress artiness is not a village system, has been promised and asked for.
People have requested being able to set guards to patrol. Once again not a request for a village system. Just simple repeating set path.
When the golems were introed we were told they would be working on something similar for thralls. Gather thralls are not wandering artisans.
The lamplighter would be a specialty thrall like an artisan but has a set path to follow to light lamps/torches. Once again not a request for a village system.
No one has requested Sims the Conan version.
Did they? Give us a time stamp so we can verify that.
Do knock yourself out, they said quite the contrary. Thralls will be getting up off benches and wandering.
First of all we are discussing a game based on a work of fiction.
Raiding villages for slaves is not something Howard fawned over. When discussing this game, first and foremost we must look to the fictional Hyborian Age established by Howard in his writings.
After that, we can dwaddle about whether it should lean more to Bronze Age fertile crescent standards, or Golden Age of Piracy sensibilities, as we see patchwork from across all of that. In the Hyborian Age, Conquistador style helms are contemporaneous with Bronze Khophesh. It’s a bit of a chimerical mess.
Secondly,
Ancient =/= Medieval
Slavery =/= Serfdom (холо́п/Kholop are slaves, distinction later)
That is a span of literal millennia and very different classes of not free people.
Lumping it all together is just a touch silly.
Trust this one. This one is very silly and an authority on all things silly.
Except when not.
There are numerous documents secular and religious (altho those often bleed together in Hegemonies where the head of state was also head of religion which is not uncommon in Ancient civilizations) pushing back into the 5th century BCE equating slavery as a moral abhorrence. Just as we can find recordings of proponents. Older documents note restrictions on who can and cannot be enslaved, varying by city state. Some arguing that it should only be a punishment for criminals and failed invaders, others calling it appropriate as a means of paying off debt. In some City States, the ruler alone could own slaves, and every slave was property of that overlord, in others they were personal rather than state property. Still other locations noted classifications of people who could not be slaves.
The earliest documentation of slavery specified it as an 8 year servitude that was owed by a defeated army to those who were victorious. But surviving documents from before the Bronze Age Catastrophe/Collapse are scant.
Moving into the Medieval (because if this one has to teach another class on the too big to fail parade of absurdity that was the Western Roman Empire, this one will become physically ill) invading neighbors to raid them for slaves was generally considered a impolite. One had to have some sort of justification for it. In the early medieval, spreading Christendom was a very common cover for it. (Of course, the Norse had a very different system in place and they were extremely proliferate raiders and slavers by this point, but no one liked them, mostly because of the raiding and enslaving, mostly by Danes, which the history of the prison colony of early Denmark is it’s own full class) Amusingly enough, there were several Papal Bulls condemning slavery practiced against other Christians. The wording of it implying that the state of Slavery was a punishment or thing inflicted on the person. There’s a linguistic argument to be made about the ecclesiastic Latin of the times, but in general it doesn’t paint a positive view of the institution. Mind you, this would also be recanted as wholesale conquest and enslavement of non-Europeans was widely endorsed as an expedient step, again, in spreading Christianity. Until again a Pope forbade Christians from owning other Christians. It’s somewhat Cyclic.
Serfdom fell out of fashion in different places in different times (The Plague axed it in much of Europe West of the HRC, and the serfs themselves gave a good chunk of the royal court the axe in England on a couple occasions, that’s the danger of having a war that lasts a century and depletes the military might at home when the right to rule is tied directly to martial prowess). Sometimes bloody, sometimes quietly. As with slavery, the conditions of serfs varied, and in some places the practices were only different as a legal fiction. But at least de jure, a Serf is still a person, just as a Peon or Villein is. Whereas a Slave may or may not be legally a person.
Serfs are not transactible separately from the land they work. Depending upon jurisdiction, they may have had some rights to the land they worked, in that they could, with permission, barter the portion that was theirs to work to other serfs. Serfs generally had a manumissions rate, and could buy out their bond to the landlord. Slaves, in some places there were manumissions, in others there were none.
Most of this traces to the concept of property ownership, itself a wildly varying legal framework across Europe and beyond.
In short, Serfs could own property. The harvest was theirs, but they owed a large portion (usually more than half of not a set volume of a specific crop) to their landlord. Serfs working mines likewise had similar legal arrangements (altho the status of the Mine worker was often different as while most Villeins had rights to the farmland they worked, few of the Serfs in the mines had rights to the mine itself. Still legally people, but without the ability to sell their job)
Meanwhile, slaves were property. In the vast majority of post antiquity locations and eras, property could not own property. Slaves usually didn’t have rights and killing one was a property crime, an act of vandalism or robbery against their owners.
But in short, one does not acquire a Serf via raiding.
That’s a Slave. One acquires more Serfs either via conquest, land purchase/inheritance, or when free persons decide to enter villeinage for whatever reason (there were several, but this ramble is already far afield).
The status of being a slave has long been considered deplorable. Enslaving others was often acceptable and even celebrated. But the extreme frequency of revolts, accompanying legal reform, and the need for ecclesiastic authorities issue constantly waffling statements on the matter indicate a much more contentious view of people as property than just that’s the way it was and everyone accepted it.
This one likes to compare it to war.
So many people have this strange double standard. War is generally considered bad. But when it is being waged again those designated bad guys over there, it’s good, or at worst unfortunately necessary.
As for Kutná Hora in specific, this one must get back out to the Sedlec Ossuary! We must share a snack or drink on the nex-
Wait, no. On topic.
That region has been mining for a long time, Kank Hill, if memory serves, had a smeltery from a century or two BC found, but the silver started flowing around the 10th century?
But to own the truth of it, this one’s knowledge of the particulars of Bohemia are imperfect. Early writings this one has seen are all from their enemies. Which by nature are untrustworthy (especially when it’s Romans writing about non-Romans). The Silver boom and Great Moravia are the next periods this one has seen reliable documentation from.
Care to fill in the blank with more details?
Edit: Forgive the Eurocentric nature of this text wall. This one can also discuss the topic across the varying Dynasties of China from Shang in if desired. But be ready for whiplash, because the mandate of heaven cannot make up it’s mind about property people in the Middle Kingdom.
Developer Stream Recap: April 30th, 2020 - Conan Exiles / General Discussion - Funcom Forums here can you see people are talking about it and and for me its sound like you hate new things to trhalls when we need new things to the thralls and you have not tryed the beta yet wit the settlement and people dont need to talk on forum about it to ask about it, the prroblem with forum all of you negative people is their so i can understand people dont put post in here with out hear people be negative over everything funcom do, as @CodeMage said before in one of his comment in a post Settlements. Never thought I would see the day. is that not good enogh proof that funcom have talked about it before. ( sorry @CodeMage for bringing you name into to it but i have to a excempel about funcom have talked about settlement before) and sorry i heard wrong with the thralls around the benches but we all can hear wrong or read wrong sometimes we all make mistake. BUT Forum have become a negative place and its kinda annoying to see.
and im not the only one who says the same around we ahev asked for the settlement system @Oduda have allso said it few days ago ( sorry i bringing you into the the post)
What they are talking about there is not the village system we are getting.
Thought I had made that clear.
There isn’t one.
I don’t have to eat a ghost pepper chip to know it’s going to be hot. Due a lot of experience with funcoms new mechanics implementation, we know it will be a bugged out disaster that will cause even more server lag.
Just take how well thralls are not working now, and apply that to all your artisans as well.
Right now when your thralls fall though your foundations you know which ones to destroy to retrieve them. But once they wander you will have no idea which foundation they are in.
Further examples. I can’t keep cats because they wander off and get eaten. I see bar patrons hanging around out side my keep all the time. What will be your reaction when that T4 edge smith that took you days to get, wanders out side your walls and get eaten by hyenas?
There is just so much that WILL go wrong.
Note: I’m trying to get a base set up to test on test, but I’m just not motivated to put much effort in to it. Could be working on it right now, but eh. Test is still builds behind live.
What people have asked for was not this sims Conan version. I will reiterate I have pointed out what people have actually asked for and it was not the soulmask village system.
My opinion this is more about some one at funcom playing soulmak and liking the system so said put it in the game. Like the change to the controller system, the personal light, the change to menus, ect WE didn’t ask for any of it. Some one at funcom played a game that had it, liked it, and thought the game needed it.
Most game forum posters originally came to the forum to complain about the game. The majority of forum posters are negative in one way or another. Very few people come to a forum to give the developer kudos.
people have ask for this and this have maybe being under devolloped for years and this systme is good for the thralls so you will more likly have no fflavor in the and 0 things do, and people ahve sakd for make thralls to do something the settlement have being something people have talk over years now just becuse you dont see it its means funcom ned to do what you say, if you dont like then dont play with thralls when the upate comes out or cage them in a sqaurcant where tehy cannot get out or run away their is so many ways to can keep you thalls in the base people thingk its the thralls their gonna make the servers lag when ist the big buildings and all the light in the bases their making the servers lagging and maybe you dont ask for the update but many others do no matter how you WANT to see it people have asked about it so stop think every thing has to be zero content frome others their have waitet for something for this, and you cannot make everyone happy should i be like you when their is content you like and i just gonna say they same things (people did not ask for it) and keep saying it one every post you can no i wil not becuse i dont want to destroy others experince for the game and what they want to be in the game. i for once have waitet for this update for a long time and i dont want to see it be canceled becuse of you people think its the thralls is getting the servers to lag when its the buildings and the light in the buildings their gonna make it lag. and funcom have talked about this settlement just look at the video i likend on the post and this is before soulmask even came out have a good day
Of course it is not. Many years have passed and so has the team in charge of the game. So have many of the core systems in the game. If you look at what the game was like when they were talking about implementing the system back then and compare it to what the game is like now, how can you possibly expect it to be the same while maintaining any sense of reasonable discord?
Yeah…that was kind of his point.
That’s a you issue. I’ve literally never had that happen. Then again, what the hell are you doing to those poor kitties to cause them to run away from you and risk certain death!
Now blocking doorways and yowling all day and night long… well that I have had a plenty… But never once have I had one wander OUT OF MY HOUSE and get gobbled up.
I only built a bar on my solo game, so this could have a lot to do with server performance (and a massive lack there of on official servers), but the bar patrons have always gone into my designated bar area and sat down on the chairs I had provided for them without issue. But as I said, this could have a LOT to do with server stress performance issues so I could easily see this becoming a massive issue, and I have seen screen shots of things like this before as well.
Until testlive has the update available, there is no way to know if they will actually be able to go outside beyond your walls if you are smart enough to close your bloody doors behind you, which I cannot fathom why you would ever fail to do so. Every since my earliest experiences on early access I have never once walked out of a room in Conan Exiles without closing the door behind me, it is just ingrained into my gaming behavior because of the simple fact that if you leave a door open anyone can get in and take anything you have. It is the same reason I never build with windows! I literally cannot leave doors open even on my solo game at this point. The point I am making is simply this, there is nothing at this point in time to say that crafter thralls will be able to interact with door and open them, so if your doors (and gates) are closed then you really should not have anything to fear.
Can you point out to exactly what people have asked for? I know for a fact that people have asked for their crafter thralls to be able to move around, interact with the world, even go out and harvest for them. Chopping down trees like lumberjacks and the like, fishing and all sorts of things to make their villages MORE ALIVE. Yeah, this kind of is pretty much exactly what they have been asking for.
Now if you completely ignore all of these request over the years and ONLY focus on the request to be able to play “dress up” with your crafters then guess what, you are deluding yourself. If you want to toss in the whole “change their appearance” feature in there as well, then again, you are still deluding yourself. Because this is pretty much in line with what people have been requesting (not exactly what but in line with and the fact that they have already said they want to incorporate the golem gathering function to other thralls that is likely to be a future step as well) what people have been requesting for many years now as well as what the original team had envisioned all those years ago.
And speaking of the whole issue of dressing up crafters and changing their appearance, that is a whole other issue in and of itself. I could be mistaken, but I do remember there being a few mods that would allow you to change your thralls appearance in the exact same manner as you could your own character while at the character creation screen. All of the same sliders and everything. But guess what, this only worked on Fighters, Archers and Entertainers. Never on crafters. Why? I do not know, I am not a modder. My guess would be that although as NPC’s they are all basically the same, NPC’s you can fight, kill and knock unconsious. However once you convert them on the Wheel of Pain they turn into one of two things. Fighters, Archers and Entertainers become Thralls and crafters become Items (not thralls but literal items that slot into benches and have the illusion of thralls but aren’t actually thralls). So in order to be able to dress them, interact with them, and all that, Funcom had to convert them all into actual thralls, and in order for that to happen they have to be literal thralls living in the world, which means they can, and will, take damage and die (and sink into foundations).
But as I said, I am not a modder so someone else with more knowledge on the subject could provide far more incite on this subject than I could.
Highly doubtful.
Speak for yourself.
Patience is a virtue. Sadly I’m all out of virtue.
still one think when people keep sapwwing fix that and keep sapmming it on the forum and want it to be fixed right away like right now in the minut that is no patient and i say up in the comment i agree funcom takes a long time to fix it but be patient until they come out at say someting dont sapwn it when the same 4-7 persons spawm it constly as they do
Mentioning a bug here and there that is slightly cumbersome is common. Mentioning bugs frequently that are hugely impacting should tip you off on how the game is being perceived by the playerbase.
Yeah…that was kind of his point.
[/quote] this was more like a mention in people are commeting on somethign they have not tryed yeat
sorry it was not my mening to keep you into this fight but everything you say i will agree on and allso this is somethign funcome have planed when they createt the game. and before soulmask come out
