So the mount update is up on Testlive now

Hooray! I don’t have anything super-detailed to write up, but I do have some thoughts based on what I’ve played of it so far:

  • The horses still look disconcertingly large and chonky to me, even on my default FoV settings.

  • I found two foals just wandering around the river unattended. I can only assume they were driven away by their mothers on account of their freakishly long necks:

(Seriously, when I first saw these things I wondered for a split second if they’d added gerenuks into the game without telling us.)

  • The using WASD to steer the horse rather than just pointing with the mouse is gonna take some getting used to after using mounts in Ark for so long, though as soon as I thought about it I realized that using a weapon and riding would be pretty difficult otherwise.

  • Horses take fall damage when jumping them over cliffs, but you do not.

    Farewell, sweet prince.

  • I am really liking the archery change, I expect I’ll waste a lot fewer arrows from misjudging distance once this goes to live.

  • I still don’t have much of an opinion either way about the new dodge rolls, since I haven’t had the chance to mess around with it much. I do like the animation, though.

  • Likewise I’m still on the fence concerning the new animation for when you start moving.

  • And finally, the worst, most awful, unacceptable, game-breaking change that’s surely going to drive away the entire player base to go play, uh, I don’t know, Subsistence or something: hitting X doesn’t switch you in and out of combat stance anymore. This is simply unforgivable, Funcom. I cannot fathom what you were thinking. You monsters.

…Okay I’m being facetious there but it’s still annoying.

Two things. One is this one:

I don’t know what default is, because I very long time ago switched it to my normal equip/unequip button, and it still works the same for me. Pressing the button brings my fists up, pressing it again puts fists away.

Second thing, it might be better to change this from General Discussion to Testlive so the dev team can identify it being specific to Testlive feedback.

Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts
I am moving this into the TestLive section, so it is easier for us to distinct feedback by patch

I realize you’re not complaining or anything, but let me take this opportunity to say that the steering system when on horseback feels very right indeed. And that’s no small thing to get right IMO. Taking a page out of the same book as the best-in-slot here, namely “Mount and Blade”, was a wise choice.

The horses and riding seem to be implemented quite well although I cant see people using lances for anything other than a bit of RP/tourney, their damage seems quite bad.

But my overall impression of riding currently is - it’s quite good BUT the juddery animation when you pan around puts it in basically an unplayable state. It looks fine from the rear but as you pan to the side (common when you’re running around, looking for enemies etc) it gets this juddery/laggy look at is seriously bad on the eyes. If it goes live in that state - well it’s going to get panned bigtime.

I’m not seeing anything different. Ran around for the last 10 minutes after I saw your report, seems fine to me. Could you take some video clips to clarify what you are seeing?

No. I intentionally leapt off a cliff and died, my mount, although severely bruised, lived.

Confirmed @zerog Player takes fall damage along with the horse.

So you’re saying it’s smooth for you? I’ll try and capture it (though im not very good at capturing video)

Ya, smooth as butter. But you might not be the only one with your issues, so a video showcasing what you are talking about could be helpful.

I rebooted and it was a vast improvement so it seems it was my end afterall - at least knowing others werent suffering it helped because it was bizarrely bad - only on certain angles etc.

thanks!

Hmm, I just went into my keybindings, and apparently the new default is to have nothing bound to the “Wield/unwield” command. I set it up as the X key again like it used to be, but now while pressing it brings my hands up, that’s all it does. It doesn’t draw/put away the last weapon or tool I used like it used to.

EDIT: So I jumped on to futz around a bit and it still didn’t draw my weapon, but then I tried it on a horse and it worked, and then it worked every other time after that? So I don’t know what that was all about.

Then my horse was weak and deserved to die.
