Isn’t this old news?
Yes and no. The old news is that they were looking to buy Funcom. The new news is that they now own Funcom.
It’s the difference between having someone make an offer on your house and turning over the keys to that person.
Not quite. It’s old news.
Happened months ago. Website that made the article was just slow to make the announcement.
Not old to me, I just was aware they own major share in Funcom. And once Funcom switch to its own ID system… I basiclly went… “yep. thats Tencent for ya”
Seems more like they sold out.
Investors sell out, it’s sort of central to the concept of investing.
We may all have to put on our clothes now. China isn’t really into nudity. If that happens I am done with the game.
Oh yes, it’s very much a thing. In fact not too far back the NBA was literally kicked out of China because one of their team managers made a tweet that favored Hong Kong. That put billions (with a B) of dollars on the line for the NBA.
I don’t know the current state of that situation, but I do know that it’s an atypical example because what usually happens is the companies, developers, studios, whatever immediately cave to whatever China’s demands are. Reason being they don’t want to piss China off and lose out on those millions and billions of dollars. Scripts get rewritten, plot-lines get altered, certain content gets removed or covered up. And not just the typical stuff like nudity or certain depictions of violence either. Anything that goes against the party line is potentially on the chopping block. Even things like Winnie-the-Pooh or the letter ‘N’. No, that’s not a joke.
So yeah, from a business standpoint it makes sense that one company would invest in another etc. etc. But it’s also true that peoples’ concerns regarding the links to China in particular are well founded. They have a reputation for censorship (and other unsavory things) that is well deserved. We’ll just have to see what happens next now that the deal is done though.
I’m weary…
China has a lot of American cash on its books that it divesting. - Best way to do it is to buy stuff up. It’s been moving away from single fiat for a while now. I would imagine any Chinese companies that have liquid US dollars will be doing the same.
I won’t lie, that was also what I thought. I do lean more toward the tinfoil hat on this sort of thing than I should (Secret World player, as well ) but I haven’t fired up CE since the ID change went in. Other reasons as well, but it’s a factor. If the Funcom ID thing spreads to other Funcom games, well…
Doubt it, they’re much better at filtering out the signal chaff that us Limeys (or 'Murica, yeah!)
This is exactly the reason, as explained to me in detail by my offspring My tinfoil is waaaaay easier to understand.
What has all this got to do with 10 cent owning Conan are they going to take kidneys from you thralls or something?
Seriously, with the inundation of news and propaganda these days, and the ugly state of the world, a LOT of us play CE to just relax and FORGET the ugliness. So please keep it off these forums, true or not.
Generally Tencent is just buying market share, they don’t usually change the content of existing games. For example League of Legends has a lot of stuff that gets censored in china, but they haven’t retroed it all to the global game.
I love how your comment about bashing China gets censored on a topic about a chinese company buying Funcom.
Anyone thats been in the industry long enough to see chinese companies ‘invest’ in games knows those games change to cater to chinese style. Despite Funcom telling us nothing will change, time will indeed tell.
So the CCP now has all my personal information
As if they didn’t had it already
Jokes aside, i don’t know how much this is going to affect the game or the next games developed by Funcom, but i hope they, even owned by a chinesse company, will stay true to their values.
