When approaching the volcano forge you die and get the “you were killed by lava” message. Walking on any part of the iron grating leading out to the forge reproduces this action. Only through “God” mode can you reach and utilize the forge proper.
This was tested in Single Player mode.
Edit: I retried this and now reached the forge interface, through climbing and clinging on the right wall, thus bypassing the deadly lava floor.
