I seriously LOL’ed when I saw that message on the loading screen ticker. Conan by far has the worst building mehanics I have seen. Building a base is a perpetual struggle with “not enough contact with ground” “cannot place here” “overlaps terrain or object”… etc etc etc.
Just wait till you try placing that devil be damned jhebbal sag temple/altar peice… that alone brought me to the brink of madness.
Both the taming pens and the JS altar have some odd characteristics in terms of where and how they’re placed. By default the pens place too far below the terrain, and the base of the altar is just bizarre in terms of how it interacts with the terrain. Whoever designed them obviously didn’t test them extensively anywhere other than completely flat terrain or on top of foundations (and even then, both don’t interact with foundations well).
Oh be serious, CE has one of the best damn building systems out there, a few problematic pieces notwithstanding. That’s not to say it’s flawless, but ‘worst ever’ is pure nonsense.
Overall I’d agree it’s a good system and very flexible. But there are a LOT of quirks with it. How many times have you tried to place something, it fails … so you run far away and come back, forcing it to reload, and then like magic, it places correctly. That kind of stuff is annoyingly common, and frustrating.
That can work in some cases (mostly with foundations), but in others you actually have to force it to reload the structure. For example, it frequently has this issue if you’ve removed a placed item (door, brazier, whatever) that was preventing a wall, foundation or ceiling from being placed. Until the structure is reloaded, it will still think that placed item you’ve removed is still “there” in some context. I don’t know if it’s a server-side or client-side issue (I suspect client-side), but it does seem to require a reload, not just a few moments to update some internal state.
Yeah sometimes I’ve noticed it requires to leave the area or relog. Sometimes just destroying a piece around it or next to it will work. Sometimes you have to build around it (I’ve had where I couldn’t add another foundation to a line of them… but if I build AROUND the spot I wanted to build, I could then fill it in and remove the ones I put around it.)
Ever tried placing that god forsaken ‘shelter’ thing down. Nothing worse than a sandstorm coming and you keep getting ridiculous placement errors with that shelter.
i had a few nigles / issues when trying to cover my ground level house, with basic ceilings. (wherever there was a door frame, i couldnt place the ceiling, but when i removed the doorway, it let me, and luckily it let me pickup the simple wooden door first).
aside from that, mapping the Align to Ground key, as Shift+Middle Mouse button, helps a lot with alignment issues and the rest of the house building seemed to work great. (i never bother with the alternative texture patterns of tiles, if it snaps to where i’d like to build, i click build)
edit: nigles (with 2 “g’s” is Not a rude word, but the word filter blocks it)
I’m sorry to hear that you don’t like it. Is there anything specific you don’t like about it? Your post mentioned certain error messages, which are tied to some bugs that we need to iron out. If you have any other comments on the building system I’d love to hear them so I can take it back to the dev team
Bugs that should’ve been taken care of BEFORE full release, not after, but it fits the MO of funcom to a T, after all, lying to a half million console gamers then refusing them refunds was easy, so anything else must’ve been a piece of cake, right Jens? It’s interesting on how quickly this was flagged, the funcom flaws are not just prevalent in the Conan game, they’re layered generously throughout the forums as well.
Hello Jens, there is the “no contact with the ground” or “overlapping object” problems while building, I’ve post two topics on PC and Updates Bugs section describing with details and screen shots that you guys never took a look.
Both posts was with the Mid/Greater Wheel of Pain and Set/Jhebbal Altars being not able to placed on a cave that had enough space for them.
Also, atop of a cliff, even you making a possible flat surface with foundations, these error messages still occurs. So to say, the building system really need some attention and testing, because it doesnt allow players to build where they could clearly be able to.
Jhebbal Altar and the shelter tent are the worst offenders. I gave up even trying the tent… the altar I finally placed down on like 6x6 foundations that made all the trees go away… and even then it placed at a weird 45 deg angle… we decided it was not worth keeping and just ripped it down after that.
Come on, it doesn’t suck, sure we could use a bit more of flexibility in it.
Less red crosses while we build would be nice.
But you know as they say, don’t shoot on the red cross
It has nothing to do with the doorframe. But you cannot block a door. Get the door out and you will be able to place stuff.
That is the sole thing I can second. Lots of others of your statement… Well. They simply wont reflect my own opinion.
But if Conan Exiles sucks this hard… In what games have you experienced better building?
To me there is only one game. Wildstar. That had great building with tons of fun. Too bad that gets discontinued. (Well, lacking content, so…)
I think the buildingsystem is fine. It’s most likely due to the engine to be in the way it is.
If anything I would prefer multiple styles of different key items.
The last DLC i.e. could have come with a different skin of the pens. Same layout, but different looks.
Aquilonian would have been perfect for a new big well.
I cant think of something for Khitan right now… Though them having walls which look the same in both directions… I guess that is good. Maybe an additional bed?
…
And if there comes a dlc featuring a “race” which is known for slaving… New skins for the wheels?
Those things.
