I’ve been playing Conan Exiles every day since my boyfriend introduced me to it in early March. I have every DLC and even run my own server. Today is the first day I haven’t logged in at all. I didn’t even have the desire to play. Most of it comes down to the new movement system. I know that sounds silly and a little whiney, but I’m being honest. The new movement system is so clunky that it just kind of sucked the fun from the game. Not to mention, the horses require me to choose between reaching my destination quickly and having a good thrall to help me fight once I get where I’m going. As it stands, you can’t do both and let’s face it, without a good combat thrall most of the dungeons are crazy difficult. You sure aren’t going to tackle the Warmaker dungeon with a horse.
My apologies to anyone playing on The Grind House. If you don’t see me on the server for a few days, just know that I’ll be back eventually.
I felt the same way when i turned it on and started doing some stuff around the base. The dodge roll takes some gettin use to but it is an equal change off. The momentum moving just stinks though. but get back on and give it a shot. hopefully they change the movement back.
I have to agree. The laggy feeling of starting and stopping makes me feel almost “car sick”. This visual jerkiness is not pleasant in the least and makes me not even want to log in. I can live with the other changes, but the movement is an unpleasant game mechanic to me =/
Just got to use the horse this morning and played around a few hours. It’s a neat addition but I’ll take a thrall or greater pet over the horse any day for the killing power.
I know you must be saying so because you dislike the new movement, but for me everyday is sad because people want to undo what to me is a great update that adds so much to the game experience it made me return to the game.
I’m pretty sure a lot of those who are complaining right now would probably be okay if there were tweaks to the new movement. They would still grumble until they got used to it, but they wouldn’t feel things are unplayable, especially after experiencing how much worse it can be.
I doubt it’s either this or that, and there’s probably a middle ground.
As for the sadness: one person is sad because they’re affected by an actual gameplay mechanism, another because some words are written on the forums. Somehow I don’t feel those are equal. I’m enjoying the new dodge a lot and I hope they don’t revert it completely, but I can understand why people feel the need to offer their feedback.
This is becoming so toxic I will not read the forum anymore because I’m enjoying the game with the patch. Better spend time playing before they rework everything into assassin’s creed cookie cutter.
You could make the same point with less toxicity, @Agnusthemagi . For instance, I didn’t like the clunky movement either when I first started playing. I was convinced that I would never like these changes. However, after playing all day, I prefer the new rolls and movement of the characters. I even like the realism of the horse movement. Slow to start and stop, but flies like a whirlwind when you get going. Give it some time. It may grow on you.
And remove the additional movement that the character moves when attempting to stop, sure I get from a realism point of view that trying to stop from a full sprint you sometimes takea few extra steps, but the way it is now that happens whether you were sprinting or if you just took 3 steps forwards, there is no way in hell someone would have enough momentum after three steps that they would take an extra 2 to stop moving, its just ridiculous.
I agree a lot of the other changes are either something that one could get used to and others were needed and do improve the game, but the jump/falling movement and the extra movement from the momentum system when trying to stop is just a straight up mistake and should be readdressed.
I’m in agreement with you. I love the new movement mechanics. It’s taken a little to get use to it. As far as thralls I don’t see a point in having anything but fighter thralls. After you level them they can tank anything. Archers and animals are pointless now. I am only taming 1 horse for checking base decays around the map.
Just out of curiosity:
I have read many posts with varying degrees of discontent about not being able to be mounted and have a thrall following you.
However, I never saw (or have overlooked it) a post where someone describes an actual ‘use case’ that would require this possibility.
The warmaker’s sanctuary is so close to the Obelisk, there is hardly a need to ride.
And yes, you won’t tackle the dungeon with a horse, but why would anyone try? Except maybe the final arena warmaker is too confined to ride anyway. Same for the winecellar. Mounts are not intended to be fighting at your side, but to allow you mounted combat.
Ok, you have to decide in advance what you are going to do, but why is that such a problem?
When I go looking for new thralls, I usually have different armor and equipment, than for dungeon raids. There is not much difference to choosing between mount or follower.
I have to agree with @Atali: after playing for a few days, I hardly notice the difference anymore. The roll may look a bit strange, especially in heavy armor, but I actually prefer it to the sidestep.
I endorse this proposal.
You may find some new fun.
E.g. I really enjoyed killing a crocodile boss as mounted archer.
Of course a thrall would have been much faster - but thats (boring) routine by now.
Just give it a little time and no one will talk about Update 40 anymore, because everyone (including myself) will be too busy complaining about Update 41
Are you seriously not phased at all by the momentum based movement causing your character to continue to move a bit even after trying to come to a complete stop?
The amount of walls my character now stumbles into while I am just moving around my base, I feel like a bumbling drunk, nevermind some heroic character from the conan universe.
I agree that for the most part I can get used to the new wind up to sprint and the dodge/roll I don’t have much issue with. But the jumping/falling change along with the way the momentum forces your charcter to stumble around like a dizzy drunk… it’s making the experience feel clunky unpolished and heavy as opposed to smooth and efficient. The extra movement when stopping needs to be removed and the jumping/falling movement needs to be tweaked. I mean why cant my character jump in a forwards direction from a standing position, heck I can do that, you try, see if when you jump while just standing if you are able to make a forwards leap and see just how much you can leap forwards from a standing position without need for a run up. Now compare that to how your character can pretty much jump straight up and down back in place when jumping from a standing position. People who are saying the changes are more realistic clearly arent talking about this one.
I think you missed her point. She knows that you’re not supposed to do a dungeon with a horse, that’s exactly why she says it, it’s ironic. Choosing between a thrall and a horse means that you have to go on foot as soon as you need a thrall. So there is no point in taking a horse to go quickly to a dungeon if it is to get to the dungeon without thrall.
And let’s be honest, we almost always need a thrall. Even if why we left at the start does not require the presence of a thrall, we always take one in case of a situation requiring its presence or if we decide en route to leave on something else.
When you go on an adventure you can change equipment depending on the situation, you can also change the weapon of your thrall to adapt its role to the different tasks you want to accomplish. On the other hand if you have no thrall, well you have no thrall. It limits flexibility and adaptation on the fly.
I love my horse, but it only serves me to admire the landscape for the moment.
I agree completely. Followers are too strong. That is why I never take one with me to new content. I always do new stuff without a follower first. Once I’ve done that I will take one with me on subsequent runs.
I also like to go hunt three skulls without a follower. Call me crazy, I like to be the hero… not my followers sidekick.
Horses would be great, if you can have a thrall with you and if you can have a knocked out NPC on the rope (or horse itself).
How great would it be to run with my horse to either the Sobek cave or the Executioner cave. Park my horse infront and then kill everything with my thrall…
But nope, doesnt work…
So my guess is: For clans the horses are great or if you have a mod with >1 follower.
For everyone else it is: kinda “meh…” not worth it to lose my thrall.
Also I have already memorized my routes to certain points… And most of them are not horse compatible
Strange as it may sound, but no.
I don’t feel drunk and don’t bump into walls.
Can’t explain why.
The only thing I noticed thats a bit annoying:
When turning the horse on the spot it will occasionally move forward one or two steps.
Edit:
Maybe it’s because of the surrounding conditions
My ping is between 40 and 48 almost all the time and I can`t remember the Server FPS to drop below 29.
Can’t state that for me.
My thrall is coming along maybe a third of my playtime (PVE).
