I would like to see things like players being able to be vampires or Lycanthropes. I would also like to see eyes and teeth that glisten in the dark.
Vampires and lycans don’t fit into the lore of Conan. Werebeasts do for the children of jhebal sag but I highly doubt we will ever see that as a option in the game.
Was not I, if anything I might have recounted one of Joel’s old mention about turning into some form of demon from when he was discussing sorcery back in the day.
Actually vampire’s do fit into the lore. Remember the vampire witch conan made love to then he met Sabotai in the original movie?
Yet we got Riddle of Steel. So I guess the movies and comic books are in fact lore.
I do t tho k I would classify a clever homage as lore, and yes I did forget akivasha, but other than that I cannot recall any actual vampires in Conan lore.
I rather not have that in the base game, as those kind of creatures in the conan lore are more on the side of the villain and in legends, if all players can turn into vampires and furrys you take away the mysticism and turn in to normalcy, which becomes boring and dull.
But there are mods for that, so all players can enjoy their game without messing with the hyborian lore, which is already messed up by the movies, but that’s what we have.
Not everyone wants to play the hero look at PvPer’s. Some want to be Darth Vader compared to Luke Skywalker. Some just want to see the world burn like the Setites which negates you villain statement. Remember Thulsa Doom?
Yes, from Kull, the conqueror comics, was a pretty cool villain that got immense power thanks to the ancient sorcery.
Now imagine if every edgolord wanted that kind power in their characters, wouldn’t mean a lot now that everybody could get it, isn’t it?
Also, nothing is stopping the player from playing from a villain point of view, but becoming a vampire or werewolf in a world where those are just as rare as our own world has to be reserved for a powerful antagonist, even if you are the villain.
Thulsa Doom a Setite was also in Conan played by James Earl Jones. Where do you think they got the snake arrow idea from? Anyways Kull and Red Sonja are both spin-off’s of Conan.
Actually, Kull stories predate Conan’s, and Red Sonja is another character that made an appearence in his stories, that indeed became a spin off later by the comic book authors. All 3 characters were originally created by the same writer.
There’s a difference between Robert E. Howard’s Conan, Marvel Comics Conan and movie Conan. I don’t know the specifics of Funcom’s licence regarding lore sources (although the Riddle of Steel DLC and the concept of the Wheel of pain suggest that they are willing to consider movie sources).
Kull is most definitely not a spin-off of Conan. He was, in fact, Conan’s predecessor by the same author. Howard created Conan’s character because he failed to sell one of his Kull stories (later released as By This Axe I Rule!) to the publisher, so he rewrote the same story, changed the main character and created the beginnings of the Hyborian Age with Phoenix on the Sword, the first Conan novella.
Red Sonya of Rogatino was also Howard’s creation - except that she was an East European adventuress from the 16th century, and co-starred Howard’s short story Shadow of the Vulture. Marvel Comics later adapted the character, and the story, into a Hyborian Age story and bastardized the character into the bikini-clad barbarian Red Sonja (note the difference in spelling). Also note that this is again a different character from the movie Red Sonja.
Back to the original topic: werewolves and similar lycanthropes were never part of Howard’s Hyborian Age. His shape-changers were the Serpent-men who infiltrated human societies during the Thurian Age (ie. Kull’s era). In Howard’s stories, even Jhebbal Sag’s followers remained human but were able to speak with, and control, beasts.
As for vampires, we had Akivasha. A unique character of ancient and terrible power who made Conan flee in terror.
Even if vampires and werewolves might fit into Conan lore, they wouldn’t be commonplace. Definitely not something that you walk into during your daily adventures, and most definitely not something you could just become yourself. A vampire could be an epic boss monster, similar to the Kinscourge or the Barrow King, not Bob from next door who got bitten by some chick.
This isn’t Skyrim, nor should it be.
