As I stated in the original thread, there is one instance of an entity called a “vampire” in the original canon - Akivasha in The Hour of the Dragon. That much precedent exists. One 10,000-year-old girl. (Also note that her bite didn’t turn people into vampires, or Conan would’ve become one - but her condition was something that could’ve been reproduced, since she offered to share her immortality with Conan. It would probably have included lots of rituals of human sacrifice, bathing in blood, etc.)
The comics are secondary canon at best - some are adaptations of Howard’s original Conan stories. Others are adaptations of Howard’s non-Conan stories that have been converted into Conan stories. Yet others are created by other authors altogether, and the farther away we get from Howard’s original works, the more questionable any additions to the lore become.
Yep it’s True.
but there is a big Place for werewolfs and Vampires in Conan Exiles.
Because we have space and fancom ajar based on the comics or orient on them,
they can use this for new DLC’s. They make profit and we get a amazing new Content in the Game.
If it’s compatible with the lore, and so it seems, yes - but one condition would be the introduction of sorcery as a new system into the game. Then this would fit with vampires, demons and other Horror figures which also would fit in H.P. Lovecrafts world.
I disagree. Funcom has gone on record (see below) and said that they use ALL sources of lore in creating the Conan Exiles world with their own unique spin on it. Case in point, we have the Yamatai and Riddles of Steel packs. I firmly believe that we should use and enjoy all lore sources, not assess them as having heirarchial value. Considering there is both Howard lore and Marvel lore for Vampires, Im in favour. I would like to test my metal against one. Maybe even as a dungeon boss like the Werewolf. I support this idea @sCope.
What can I say? I’m a Howardian purist. I didn’t buy the Yamatai expansion for this particular reason - it doesn’t fit into my vision of the Hyborian Age.
I firmly believe that the vision of the original creator should be respected, even in cases where later authors expand on the material. This is why “ranking” source material is important when deciding what new content to add into the game, and that’s why it all goes through Joel.
So even though I’m not opposed to vampires in Conan Exiles (after all, as I said above, there is prececent), the way vampires are represented in the game should not feel like Bram Stoker, or Stephenie Meyer, or Charlaine Harris, or Angela Sommer-Bodenburg. It should feel like Robert E. Howard.
Im a man who likes options myself. As I always say: “The option which presents more options is usually the better option”. Other talented authors and Marvel have poured their hearts and creativity into trying to carry on Howards legacy, and shine the spotlight on Conan for new generations. To dismiss their work as worthless because its not REH is a disliked mindset for me.
I actually didnt buy Yamatai originally either, but for different reasons. Namely because at that point 2 out of the 4 DLCs were were based on Asian cultural influences, I personally felt it was skewing the feeling of the game from a Hyborian one to a more feudal one. But as time passed and more diversity in DLCs emergened, and I needed more door option, I ended up buying it. The Riddles of Steel I snapped up immediately. Although I do wish they would do a second pack of it which focuses on weapons; and especially includes Conans fathers Sword.
And I believe that Funcom has done a tremendous job of doing just that. Heres the problem with ‘ranking’ the lore as I see it. Ok number 1.Robert Howards sources (obviously). But heres where it gets extremely messy. Now rank all the Expanded Universe lore from 2. onwards. That includes books, comics (including EVERY author for each), games, movies, and everything in between. It then implies that anything too far down the list is unusable, which conflicts with Funcoms direction. And who should dwcide the cut off line and say (essentially) that everyrhing below this line is and should not be used? No thanks. We dont need lore heirarches, just options in creative freedom.
I agree. Nor should they feel like Twilight vampires (ugghh). They can be included and still be faithful. I feel they should be based directly on Conan lore also.
I dont care for Vampires…or werewolves in Conan. From one side…its balance issue in every game…
2nd… all role player (not even hardcore ones) that want it… bleh
There alot of missed lore stuff… and I’d rather see some of critter from dark, or other things that aren’t main stream like WW and Vamps.
Alot more demon stuff, or things like Dreg’s Slug I’d rather see.
From my understanding from most of Conan fans I’ve meet.
Books = Source Martial
Movies are movies, and bend the rules…cause Movies.
Comic are Comic, they bend rules…cause Comics.
If later 2 want to be part of Lore, is cool… the original works kinda beat them.
Then again… Its not that hate Werewolves… just no one ever does them justice in a game.
Same for Vampires.
I’d rather see demons who kill humans types, and become a new purge type for all area in later update.
Or maybe some dark tentacle god, thats into sexy time… and we get more outfits. wink wink
Or what ever conan bumped into down in dark. (I havnt been to wine cellar…so…no clue)
I’ll play Castlevania if I wanna go murder some, or maybe dig up legacy of kain or something. XD
I’ll grant that one could make a case for vampires of some sort appearing as enemies somewhere in the game, but I think I can say with a fair bit of confidence that making them a race option will never happen, because not only is this just not that kind of game, but it would jar wildly with everything else. “Normal human, normal human, normal human, normal human, supernatural creature, normal human…”
No, no. It’s BLEH BLEH BLEH!!! Put some feeling behind it.
Anyway, I for one really wouldn’t mind vampires being a thing at all. And yes, if they do become a thing I would like to see the ability to become one being an option. I see lots of potential in the idea, in fact. But it can’t just be a cheap tacked on kind of thing like “Ok here’s your fangs. You can suck blood and you get one point in strength.”
Again, this isn’t that kind of game. The races are purely cosmetic, they don’t get advantages or penalties. Suddenly adding one that does, especially a non-human one, would be such a massive departure that I seriously think it would irritate a lot of people.
Conan is low fantasy. Playing as a fantasy creature is straying dangerously close to high fantasy territory.
If just, even for cosmetics would be wonderull for a lot of player.
More deepnes around vampires and werewolfs would be nice and amazing.
Any kind of Content around them would be amazing.
I’m going to have to agree with Sera67 and Kapoteeni on this one. Vampires do not belong in the world of Conan. At least not in the sense most people would want to see them.
Yes there were movies and comics. Heck my comic collection goes back to issue #4 from the 70’s. They’re good reads, not canon. If anything is rolled into the official lore, I would suggest the latter writings by Jordan, de Camp, etc.
