People are exploiting the Direct Connect feature and bypassing the existing ping limit on official servers. What is the purpose of the limit if its circumvented so easily? Please implement it as a server rule option and apply it to the official server.
Having large clans of people joining all with massive lag is really unenjoyable and the loophole should be fixed in my opinion.
Its kind of a waste of development time. If they did this, those people would simply use a VPN close to the server. They could have realistically a 800ms ping but the server sees them as 30ms.
This is a fact you simply have to deal with when fighting in situations without active moderators watching the fights.
Here’s a better idea: get rid of the ping limit altogether. If people are somehow exploiting having higher latency to their advantage, fix those exploits.
Imposing a ping limit on direct connect would make the game worse for several reasons.
One of them is that when a server is having performance problems, the ping will spike for everyone on that server. During that time, no one will be able to join the server. Basically, you’re making existing performance problems even worse for everyone.
Another problem is that the “ping” value reported by the game is nothing more than the time elapsed from the moment of sending a custom UDP “ping” packet to the server until receiving the corresponding UDP “pong” packet in reply. This means that the “ping” value is highly unreliable and very prone to ephemeral latency spikes. And that, in turn, means that you’ll often run into situation where you see a ping of 70 in the server browser, click “Join”, and then have the game tell you it tried to join but your ping was over the maximum.
Lastly, as @Taemien rightly pointed out, ping cap will be easily circumvented by a VPN.
They deployed the ping limit after the EU-US servers were overrun. It did help keep people in their own geographical areas more, but as pointed out, is easily overcome with a VPN.
I think the current system is working as intended, and should be left alone. When I get a high ping on my server, ( Which is rare ) I just DC in.
I do not mind people from other geographical regions playing on my US west coast server, as long as they are not cheating/hacking/being obnoxious.
Truly believe this is largely a PVP problem. ( Shocking, I know )
Someday Funcom will realize that they have created two completely separate environments and act accordingly, instead of making each environment suffer due to the constraints of the other.
There are plenty of times the server I play on, even with me being in the region and geographical proximity shows up with an incredibly high ping on server select, and it doesn’t reflect that in the actual game.
That about right.
The list shows 999ping, blocking me from entering a server which in reality only has 120ping.
Without direct connect, I would have been stuck at the list forever.
