While Yamatai is a “novelty” on Hyborian canon, it is not without some foundation in the original lore. But that is a common factor around these parts.
A while back some people were frustrated that the guy is wearing a conquistador garb and saying that it was New World this, Spanish that, Money grab that other.
Then, you go to the actual sources, Zingara is practically a mixture of Roma/Spanish/Goth culture and it is said to be the forefather culture of the modern peoples it mirrors. And there is a description of someone dressed in a “Conquistador” armor but in name in Black Colossus if I recall.
The least of the worries about Funcom work is the concepts of Hyboria.
If they made the game mechanics and systems as well as they do the interpretation of Conan Lore, this game would be the best Conan game ever.
The second I saw it.
With selection of cultural armors of the right era, there is no need to pull armors from after 1AD.
The Zingaran captain Zaporavo, in The Pool of the Black One, is depicted as wearing a morion helmet. So at least as far as Howard was concerned, late 16th century headgear was completely in setting.
So if Funcom wants to make Zingaran cultural equipment, drawing from the primary source for inspiration sounds about right.
