Age of Conan Classic – Fresh Start Server With Phased Expansions

Hey everyone,

Thanks for reading my Post. I’ve been thinking a lot about how great it would be to see Age of Conan revived with a Classic-style Fresh Start server, similar to what we’ve seen with WoW Classic or RuneScape’s old school version.

The Concept: Age of Conan: Classic Fresh

A new server that launches the game as it originally was back in 2008 – no expansions, no Khitai, no Saga mechanics – just the core Hyborian world with:

  • Tortage & the mainland zones (Wild Lands, Field of the Dead, Eiglophian, etc.)
  • Max level 80
  • Original raids (Kyllikki, Vistrix, Yakhmar, Black Ring Citadel)
  • No AA system (at launch)
  • No Khitai gear power creep
  • Slower progression, immersive leveling, social world

Phased Expansion System

Just like in WoW Classic, expansions would be unlocked gradually:

  1. Phase 1 – Vanilla AoC: Level 1–80, core content & raids
  2. Phase 2 – Rise of the Godslayer (Khitai)
  3. Phase 3 – Turan, Dragon’s Spine, Unchained Dungeons, etc.
  4. Phase 4 – AA System, PvP revamps, cosmetics

Each phase could last 6–9 months, depending on player interest and completion metrics.

Why this would work

  • Brings back veterans & curious new players
  • Removes power creep & complexity for casuals
  • Brings back the true feeling of adventure AoC once had
  • Refreshes the economy and server culture
  • Makes the world feel alive again – leveling zones, dungeons, and guilds matter

Final Thoughts

There’s still so much love for this game. The combat, the atmosphere, the music, the world – it all still holds up. A Classic Server would be a low-risk, high-reward way to breathe new life into AoC without needing full-scale development.

I know Funcom’s resources are limited – but if even a small Classic revival was possible (maybe with community feedback or even crowdfunding), it could bring Conan back into the spotlight where it belongs.

Would you play Age of Conan: Classic if it launched?
What would you want to see in the phased content?

Let’s make Hyboria great again!

I think this is delusional. AoC does not have enough content and hasn’t changed as much as it would be needed to bring back a “classic” version. The biggest changes were the hit point and dmg changes and bugfixes (yes also AA). Also AoC does not have the huge popularity WoW has (unfortunately) and therefor you would have just another empty server and maybe the less players on crom.

No I would not play it. No I don’t like your phases.

I’d rather have another Khitai expansion. Lot’s of dungeons for gear progression and new raid content.

I don’t know why everyone that suggests any changes to any game always throws this phrase in. It’s maybe only true 1% of the time and at this late date in the games life cycle - it wouldn’t.

Would I play - No. I see problems with your phases starting with releasing Turan a level 50 zone AFTER Godslayer. I can see Valhiem after as it scales, but not a low level zone.

The Saga’s worked way back when, because the pop wasn’t in the dire straights it is today. They also worked without any of your holding back content, features etc…

Of course if they did:

Than you’d have to also remove all those quests they added to fill the lvl 20 - 40 quest gap the game launched with.

One reason the game never caught on was it was broken when launched and I think it took a good year to fix it.

While I loved the Saga’s they did, I don’t think anything like that would help the game at this point.

Better if they just cleaned the game up and launched a hardcore advertisement campaign to let people know the game is still here.

I’d even be happy if they just imported the Conan Exiles maps over and added quest givers.

The problem I see with adding more Khitai content is that would only benefit the end game players & those that are willing to spend money (since Godslayer is still B2p) on it.

Something more middle of the road adding to the F2p part might be better.

To be honest, if people don’t want to pay, they don’t deserve new content. I’m usually not defending greedy companies, but no company will provide something if it’s not paid in some way. So I’d rather pay for content and subscription and get something for my T6 toons to do, than have new FTP low lvl content. There are already plenty dungeons people can do and just skip…

It also does not have to be Khitai themed, but an expansion like Khitai in the sense of amount of content. Turan and dragonspine were a very small addition. (Not many dungeons, no factions/farm content, raid content was ok)

I’m also open for 12 man raids, to help the small population find enough people. I’d also love some PvP content and easier access to PvP gear.

As a long-time fan of Age of Conan: Unchained, I would like to kindly ask if there’s any chance we could see new content or updates for this amazing MMO in the near future.

Despite the years, the game still has a dedicated and passionate player base that deeply appreciates the rich lore, combat system, and world you’ve created. Many of us still log in regularly, help new players, and keep the community alive.

Even small updates – such as:

  • A new dungeon or raid,
  • Cosmetic additions,
  • Class balance tweaks,
  • Seasonal events,
  • Or even a roadmap announcement

… would breathe new life into Hyboria and remind us that the game we love is still part of your vision.

We know your team has moved on to new projects (like Dune: Awakening), and we fully respect that. But even a minor content drop or official response would mean a lot to the remaining community.

Thank you for your incredible work over the years, and we hope Hyboria isn’t entirely forgotten.

Just a reminder. This company dont know how to fix rheir brokwn realm transfers, and their payment system is also fubar, something they also havent gotten their head around.

If they dont fix the system that allows us to give them money, it says alot about their vision for the game

Imo the best thing they could do with limited resources is to change HOW we play the current game. Weekly rotational activities that gives extra rewards for doing them. They could even make everything except endgame raidgear be purchased for rf shards. Except that all activities in the weekly rotation rewards shards. This way it could bring together the remaining players into the same activities without it being only rf or wb. And u could collect all vanitys/mounts etc that u desire..

Companies learned that F2p content generates more money than direct sales when DDO went F2p. Both DDO & Turbine were on their last legs financially when DDO did the mixed F2p/Sub model.

It was such a success, Turbine shifted LotRO to the same model and then other companies started copying them.

So while new content may be released in the F2p area. The company would be banking on seeing monies generated via the other methods than B2p.

And just like I said in my 1st post, everything you’re asking for will only benefit a small percentage of players, be they existing or future.

Even at it’s height, the end game / raiding community only made up a small proportion of the population. Catering to them vice the majority of the population would not benefit the long term health of the game.

The biggest chance for some slight revival could be some free attention from some conan or redsonja movie. But if i know funcom they would rather push exiles for that

F2P only generates more money if you have microtransactions, which are needed to progress or vanity, which would have to be constantly added, so people keep buying. AoC could not live on the “pots” sold as mtx.

I said I’d want an expansion like Khitai. I said I’d want dungeons. I said I’d also want raids. So how is nothing of that something MMO players want?

Your statement is ridiculous. Also every MMO lives of the endgame content. If there is nothing to do, people will leave. So tell me, what does the “majority” do, if not dungeons, endgame quests and raids? The most popular things in AoC seem to be “world boss” and “raid finder”.

Dear Funcom team,

I hope this message finds you well.

As a long-time player and passionate member of the Age of Conan community, I’d like to speak on behalf of many others who still log in, support the game, and keep Hyboria alive after all these years.

We understand that resources are limited and that priorities shift over time. However, Age of Conan still has a loyal and dedicated player base that continues to explore, raid, and enjoy the world you created. We love this game—its atmosphere, combat, lore, and depth are still unmatched.

That said, we respectfully ask: could you please consider giving us something—anything—that shows we haven’t been forgotten?

Whether it’s a small content update, an event, or even just a community message acknowledging our continued support, it would mean a great deal. Many of us are not asking for massive expansions—we’re asking for a sign of appreciation and perhaps some minor additions to keep the spark alive.

We’re not going anywhere. We’re still here. And we’re still hoping.

Thank you for the years of great memories—and hopefully for more to come.

I apologize for the time it has taken to reply. While Age of Conan is a game very dear to me, it isn’t a high priority project so it takes time to investigate what is possible.

Unfortunately and as I mentioned when we first spoke, we have no developers that can do improvements to the game. It’s on an old engine that isn’t maintained and the staff we have on Customer Service is only able to do very limited activities with the game.

The team is still looking into a possibility of having more rotation on lootboxes, but it’s still not something we can promise.

Age of Conan is a great game and we’re very proud of having been able to develop for it for over a decade after its launch, alas it’s now getting so old we can’t do more.

Thank you for the care and energy you have put into the game and its community!

Best regards,
Rui Casais

AOC has no support for years

Age of Conan need a remaster on new engine like UE5 or something similiar. Or AOC2 but its impossible.

lmao
Do you realise the amount of work needed to switch a game to a completely new engine ?

Just enjoy the game for what it is, a trip down memory lane, and a channel of communication with old friends. Now and again you’ll make some new ones.

Funcom doesnt even have a single developer to fix launcher error. Nothing gonna happen to this game sadly

Yes, and so? Its need work ofc. But result will be worth it

I wonder what should or could possibly happen for Funcom to even just have a look at this.

Id much rather see a texture overhaul, im even willing to do it for them for free :stuck_out_tongue:
I just cannot access texture files I only know how to rip them.

with personal experience from Classic WoW id say its a recipe for doom. Especially considering that seasonal isn’t very trending within the Classic WoW community these but linear progression.

I would come back in a heartbeat. Played from launch to about 2013. The biggest thing that ruined the game for me was when they removed the animation canceling around patch 1.4 - 1.6. Would love to go back to get that back. The pvp fights were insanely fun
