Age of the Gods

Age of the Gods:

  • Religion war events:
Events where NPCs of two opposing religions attack each other. Players can pick a side or just kill everyone with varying rewards based on the choice.

  • Useable alters:
Make the alters in the world useable. Allow crafting in them based on their level. (Excluding God token and bubble). Possibly have things that can only be crafted in them. (Would need to add a Mitra & Jabal T3 somewhere).

  • Religious magic:
New magic unique to each religion. Healing for Mitra, Corruption for set, Ice for Ymir, Etc, Etc.

  • New religious crafting
Add new items to be crafted in alters. New outfits, foods, gear, and banners. Could move the feasts for each god into their respective alter. More placeables. General things to liven up each religion

  • OPTONAL FEATURE:
Add the OPTONAL feature of limiting the number of religions known by a player and/or clan. This idea would be OPTONAL and would be off by default. Maybe have just 2 or 3 servers with it on to gauge people’s reactions.

  • Let Them Fight!!:
    Let the Avatars fight! Please!

  • Atheism
    Add a no religion option.

  • Crom!:
Give something to Crom. I know some promonent figures who have many suggestions.

Runescape had this years ago. That was the point where the lore started going to a direction I didn’t like so I ended up quitting.

Religious magic has never really been a thing in Hyborean lore. We’ve seen some religious characters do some sort of magic, but there has never been any implication that the power comes from prayer - rather, they’ve all been the sort of folks who would dabble in dark sorceries.

Both Exiled Lands and Siptah have lore explanations why the ritual sacrifices we commit on the altars have magical effects, and the explanations have nothing to do with gods. So I’m not strictly opposed to adding ā€œmagicā€ to religions - just so we know that the source of the power is really the lingering magic of the Giant-Kings, or whatever we have on top of the Tower of Siptah, or the Outer Dark.

According to Conan, the gods of the Exiled Lands are not real gods, they are weapons.

Whoever is puppeteering the fake gods (Nyarlathotep) could also give miraculous powers to the worshippers.

That was my intent. I’m not the greatest at describing things sometimes. What would a sorcerer who also worships Set do differently then one who worships Ymir?

I think we mean rituals instead of runic magic.

This.

The table top game based in OGL 3srd had a supplement called Faith and Fervor that described the religions in quite a bit of detail. Much of it was expanded upon the default REH lore, but I can definitely see that FC decided to use either it or whatever it was based off of as a bit of a reference.

In FnF priests using magical abilities were effectively using Sorcery and very similarly to how we do in game. This includes those priests of more… ā€˜benevolent’ deities such as Mitra and such.

Mitra was an interesting one because its priests were forbidden (and followers too) from practicing magic. However the higher tier priests did as they learned more of the mysteries. But these were secrets and such that lower tier priests weren’t privy to.

For what I’d like to see is a complete overhaul of the religion system. One restriction would be that when you choose a deity, you are effectively stuck to that deity. Changing is possible, but you can only have one at a time.

I wouldn’t limit clans to having one religion. But I would expand the limitations of altars. Something along the lines of an entire grid square. But the benefits of a religion would be worth it.

But another thing about religion is it should be something that has a bit of an upkeep. Like if you are a priest of Set, you need to engage with the requirements of that religion. Something you need to take an active part and role in.

I wasn’t suggesting clans be limited to only 1. In the pervious threads I’ve made on religion changes. I have suggested a slider. Letting the server admin set a limit from anywhere between 1-9. (Leaving room for more from mods or updates).

As a whole I actually agree with you. People being able to just get every religion is Ludacris. However I know their will be pushback from any attempt to bring reason to the players who do this so I think making it optional to start might be the way to go.

I dunno if people would complain very much if the benefits were significant. For example, I’ve had two new characters since 3.0 went live and I haven’t bothered crafting any altars. I couldn’t even really tell you what the religion I chose for both said characters actually was lol. So the point here is the religions aren’t really significant. There’s some little perks from one or another, so you kind of need multiple to make a difference ā€˜in case’ you need something.

But if the benefits were far more significant. If say choosing to be a Priest of Mitra and going down the different tiers was as empowering as learning different tiers of sorcery. Then people would be alright with having to choose only one.

Of course there will always be players who want everything, and they have singleplayer and console commands for that. Just like there is a learnallspells command, they could give them a learnallreligion command too for that.

But if the religions were as significant as I’d like them to be. Then learning all would be a bit out of balance.

This one likes most of these ideas.

While some details may be a bit left of canon and need some alterations (religious magic is sorta a sticky wicket, but in concept, having more that is mystically done at the altars would be nice)?

Especially with gear now being more skins and less stats, having full distinct religious vestments for each religion would be very nice.

Also, while we all know the religions practiced in the Exiled Lands are false (for the most part), how delusional must one be to call oneself a Mitra priest and stand buddy buddy with Set clergy?
A level of exclusivity would be welcome…
But perhaps, instead of greater restriction, perhaps an incentive for having only one faith’s offering place within a landclaim?

There have been many many posts from myself and other about making religion better. Having an Age of The Gods would be the time to do it.
