Anyone who actually uses shields?

Your best friend early game are your legs.
There is literally nothing you can’t outrun in this game. The hardest to outrun are felines. With those you need to be watchful about stamina. If a sabertooth gets you down early game, you are in for a world of pain. If it’s a one skulled, you’re dead. Late game they aren’t a problem any longer, but if you go north while you aren’t leveled, avoid the forest after the ftozen lake and don’t go up the wrong path when climbing for stargazer’s crest (3 or 4 sabers there).

Until you die in a bad spot and accrue tomb after tomb trying to get your corpse back. That or on the rear of Darfari camps
 le sigh.

Ok, it should be evident this long pause IS very much intended. If you don’t say what the hell that thing is soon, I am going to kick you in the shin, like back in Kindergarden.

Once I got killed a few times in a row when I went up to the volcano with @stelagel . It was the strangest thing. Probably we were activating all the pillars as he used to do the moment we got out of the desert. Anyway, I don’t remember what killed me the first time
a fall, a npc? Well, I don’t know. But I had to retrieve my kit. Fortunately @stelagel had ice, if I remember correctly. So, there I went naked, running through the volcano, got my kit while being chased and escaped through the tpath of the pilgrim. Bam, frostbite killed me. It only took a few seconds. It was stupid, because it shouldn’t after I retrieved my kit. So, I was kind of puzzled. It was odd. Time was running out and we weren’t understanding what the problem was. Each time I retrieved the kit, I died soon after from frostbite. Finally we got it. I was still under the cooling effect of eating ice when I left the volcano and the cold killed me very fast. We were seriously underleveled, so our hp wasn’t up there.
It was the transition from that scorching heat that forces you to eat ice to the very cold biome right at the exit. As I was being chased, I didn’t have the luxury of letting it wear off, so I either fought or climbed, let the cooling effect pass and then it was easy.
It was a clear example of the Murphy’s law in action and I never forgot the lesson. Even a tame survival aspect as temperature, basically innocuous at this point, can be a problem when things go really sour. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Oh i know and you do very well. But no matter how much we love pve and single player, this game will always have to serve pvp reasons too.
So yes, fancy shiny legendary pieces will always attract the interest of a pve player, but each games skills are really hidden on the pvp aspect.
In this game however pvp players hardly use legendary gear, except Musashi that was free for some time now :rofl::rofl:.
They are happy when they steal legendaries, have no doubt about it, but they learn to survive literally everywhere naked, so they mostly stash the loot and go around with something they can afford to loose.
So the game provided for this need some items, either from the feeding system, either from religions or alchemy.

Just to answer your question if legendary gear is serving any reason in this game. The answer is speed and easiness, but it’s mostly shiny trinkets, the golden cheerios another member told me in here some years ago.
You can do everything without legendaries, you can do everything without armor, literally everything, all you need is to know some mechanics of the battle and double jump .

Since the topic however is for shields, tell me your opinion for the “unwelcome gift” please.

But
 but
 but
what is this naked bomber thing, goshdarnit??

I got zero beef with pvp, so much so I never touch it. As a matter of fact, this is a pvp-centric game, I am quite clear about that; that is what gives it longevity, for one.

Furthermore, I am pro shields, have always been the tank in the many a game I’ve played since I started playing video games back in 98, but in Conan, I simply don’t use them, I do much better without them; I am an avid 1h Sword user. I learned a lot from this thread, which, unfortunately is a confirmation of what I have experienced in my time playing.

There are still places, where environment can kill you, such as volcano and surrounding area.

You mean naked and only chewing on stuff?

Yes, since you still need armor to deal with enemies)
Frost giants inflict temperature-related effect as well, that can cause issues.

For the most part, increased hunger/thirst are only downsides of not having your temperature in middle area.

I suspected as much heh.

Exactly  I was thinking of almost the same example (except I blamed Barnes, because having a dancer with me had been giving me just enough buff to survive the transition, until he didn’t follow me out, lol.)

I’m singleplayer too, but I’ve seen enough in these forums and elsewhere to be able to answer since Stelagel has become ‘cryptic’ lol - naked bombers are a phenomenonin the PVP side where a group will attack someone’s base with some (or even all) running naked with no gear, just carrying explosives. That way they have nothing to lose (and can respawn at some FOB and equip more bombs), but can just charge, dodge and blow holes in the defenses.

Fortunately not something you or I will ever need to worry about

Only if you are careless (once you have become used to those areas) - there used to be a lot more effort required to survive them.

Even that is not essential (just far easier than not having it) - as Marcos showed earlier, you can run across the coldest place in the game naked (and can always outrun any enemy, so armor is not essential) - similarly the Frost Giants’ effect is easiest to counteract with food - armor doesn’t do enough to make a huge difference (though certain legendaries, such as Solspiel can generally also counteract it fairly well).

Ice temple is cold enough for Dragonscale helmet to not be sufficient by itself in some spots. Same applies to some areas inside volcano. Though it depends from time too - night is naturally colder, so cold areas become even colder.

Thank you thank you, sheesh.

Yeah, going naked only with spicy food while hopping to kill Hrugnitlr of the Frost and his retinue is a very bad idea! :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:
But you can bet there’s at leastt one player that can pull it off. Some dudes live for that kind of stunts. With mulled brew, and a grit/agility buid, maybe

Oh, for sure, always use food regardless.

How much should we bet that Stelagel tries it after this conversation

I have also been a naked bomber, it was enjoyable to read @stelagel’s account

Taking down bases naked can be for a host of reasons but is also a tactic. Like Stelagel says, nothing to lose.

Now imagine someone fighting completely naked under level 10 taking down a bunch of 60s with only a legendary weapon. THAT is epic and scary as hell. Glad I’ve always been on their side XD

To be sure, pvp is where real danger lies. It can’t be compared to pve even if there’s a whole lot if pveing while pvping. For people who never played pvp, if you ever played a fps, the difference is like doing the solo campaign and then going to multiplayer. Bots suck, players are deadly. It can’t be compared. Conan adds to that a host of tactics related to efficiency, building and raiding, components missing in fps games. But it’s too time consuming, unfortunately.

My best is while they were coming with their fancy armors (back then i didn’t had dlcs) and weapons 5 persons vs 1 who just arrived in the server and the only “useful” knowledge was the bear hug .
They were coming and i was e moting the bear hug, they were trying to send me away from my house and my elevator so they can climb up and bomb my wooden door . The last one who stayed behind was getting bored since i was dodging all his pathetic efforts and dancing. So he was using the elevator to go up and have some bombing fun, yet just a little before he reaches the entrance i was removing the elevator to die from great fall . I wasn’t looting bodies mostly but on bullies i was skinning their corpses so to have just 5 minutes to retrieve their loot bug yet i was keeping their hide and flesh to feast and sleep .
