The new experimental system with intense self-illumination makes several gameplay mechanics (day/night cycle, torches and off-hand requirement, nightvision equipment, sorcery wisps. several legendary weapons) effectively redundant and introduces a constant alien light-emitting element to the scenery, making building and screenshot-taking more complicated than it should be.
It would be greatly appreciated if self-illumination was made into a server-side option with a possibility to turn it off completely for an old-school pitch black night experience. Assigning it to a difficulty preset would make for a neat addition, so that “Decadent” difficulty automatically gets the current self-illumination area and “Barbaric” goes completely dark.
Alternatively, tying self-illumination to some optional item would be a reasonable solution. But it does raise some additional problems (how to get this item, what do other players see and so on) circumvented by the suggested server control.
Actually, making it an In-Game setting (on by default) instead of a server setting would make more sense. That would allow people that don’t want it to turn it off and those that like it can keep it on, even if they’re all playing on the same server. I seriously doubt Funcom will do either, but I like the idea.
That’s absolutely not true. The Devs are here and they are listening. I also absolutely despise the personal light and would like to see it made an optional game setting that was on by default but could be turned off if you don’t like it.
The “glow” isn’t as bad as I’d feared, but I preferred the time when in the words of Thulsa Doom: “Now they will know why they are afraid of the dark. Now they will learn why they fear the night.”
You know, i suspected that after the eclipse devs gonna pull off something like this, just didn’t want to believe they actually gonna pull it off in a survival sandbox game, yet here we are with every player character becoming a living lantern! At very least i’d like to have an option to turn it off.
First thing I’ll do after release will be looking/waiting for a mod that undoes that new “feature”.
I need my dream dust addiction to have a purpose.
No, I seriously enjoy dark nights in survival games.
It sometimes forces you to improvise. Makes you adapt your playstyle. Inspires you to craft tools to overcome the difficulty.
What I detest is when day inexplicably turns into night… due to a random cloud or shadow of a lone tree… and then back into day. Then open plains night turns into the inky abyss regardless of moon or starlight. it is as if no one knows how bright the night can actually be if there isn’t total cloud cover.
Oh btw, here’s a top-down very zoomed out view in pitch-black The character isn’t really visible but it’s in the center there. This is how much of a lamp they turned us into haha. That brown thing that’s lit up there is one of those dry logs you can harvest for bark
Not sure, though weird that you would ask that
Just in case to clarify, this light is exclusively for your character and your character only, other players cannot see it in case you’re worried about it giving away your position in PvP or something.
