Apprenticeship & Professions

Hello.

Would the add of professions be off topic in the world of Conan ?
I thought, we have thralls who master their own professions in the craftstations, why not us too as players?

Let’s imagine ephemeral “attributes” for each profession, which you would have to be taught by “mentors”, who would be the thralls you have tamed or recuited and placed in your craftstations. The higher Tier the mentor, the better perks you can unlock in this ephemeral gauge of profession attributes.

Also, once you have mastered the profession, you would have to exerce it often enough to maintain the attributes to their max of abilities (afterall, a surgeon who stops operating to write books all year long about surgery procedures is more of an educator than a surgeon). That is why I call it ephemeral. It would not be something hardcore though, it would be balanced enough for most of players.

Those professions would roughly be the same as the ones found in the game, or at least would not break the lore of the game if you think of a new profession.

Example:

Blacksmith.

I start as an apprentice taught by my mentor (who is diligently waiting for me in their craftstation). I must craft in his bench all kinds of weapons in all kinds of materials, with all kinds of difficulty to progressively raise the gauge of the blacksmith profession.
If my mentor is Tier 1, I can only unlock the smallest level of the profession, no matter how long I train.
If my mentor is a named blacksmith, I can unlock up to the highest level of the profession -as long as I train and complete the due tasks-.
Each level would unlock small perks, unique to the profession.
Let’s say: Tier1 would unlock +2% durability on weapons used during combat. Tier 2 would unlock +2% lightness on the weapons equiped in the toolbar. And so on.

Ideas of professions:

  • alchemist
  • tanner
  • smelter
  • blacksmith
  • armorer
  • taskmaker
  • cook
  • performer / bard

What do you think?

I like it a lot, but a 2% buff is almost negligible.

IMO, a problem with Conan Exiles is the sheer amount of tasks we have available that don’t simply don’t pay off.

We wouldn’t want this great idea to be turned in to yet another one. Also, the buffs would have to last a significant amount of time. Otherwise, it just becomes another type of grind.

With that in mind, it’s a keeper.

Yet if the buffs are significant, then we will see the nerfs come down. We already have too many complaints over ease of game now and you are saying we need another method of buffs? That premise doesn’t make sense.

Yeah, there are a lot of chests thumpers around who never presented a single shred of evidence to support their bravados, @erjoh .

We would need the buffs to be worthy. Otherwise it’s more of the same senseless grind. We have enough of that already. If it’s to create another pointless activity, it’s better to leave things as they are.

Some games have already this feature. For example on 7 days to die, the more you craft an item the better you fix your gear or tools.
Yet why i find this feature handy?

For pve.
A player is bored of the game but refresh his base just because of the crafters. If he-she masters all the professions, then this wouldn’t be a problem anymore.

For pvp.
Imagine a pvp player that lost every single crafter on his last raid. With this idea of yours the pvp player do not need named crafters anymore. So basically it’s just sticks and stones to retrieve from now on.

The problem!
Too many hard-core players, but only on words not on deeds, will come here to complain that the game has become very easy. Like it’s not since the beginning . The only difficulty this game has is organization, nothing else.

I wouldn’t mind to be master crafter, I’d love it. Yet only by capturing a master crafter you would become one too. And in order to become master crafter you have to start your education from tier 1. This way low lvl crafters would have better reasons for existence.

I like it Ey

Very useful. You would gain the bonus of the crafter yourself. That’s a very nice idea. If you lost it after learning, no biggie. You had the ability yourself. I like this idea a lot.

It should be this way, years now. When you are known in a pvp server then you create rivalries. So a good way to play on a server is to keep low profile until you’re ready. Knowledge was always the absolute force in this game, skills are way behind.

We are talking about attributes now. I don’t mind it but some sort of artificer category that would boost gear. I would also put it out there that golems should get bonuses as well with this attribute. Furthermore only these artificers can make bombs in the wild while the rest must rely on the alchemist bench. Lastly, these boosts and abilities are only available if you have the points in the attribute (therefore avoiding the bestial memory switching, ad nauseum)

I did not think of this idea to grind, but more as a complement of what we have. For instance, I tend to craft a new armor for each new thrall I tame. Without going out of my way, that craft would become part of the profession leveling.

And I agree that it should last some time and not disappear right away, hence my comment about the “hardcore” part. A player who can only play on weekends should still be able to have fun without having his gauge completely reset each Sunday.

I thought, it could be cool too, when the battle pass asks to “craft” things, that it would not be a craft to waste, but a craft for a greater purpose (leveling your profession and getting something of it).

As for the 2%, I don’t know, it was just a random number lol.

A taskmaker profession could enable a player who “puts” the thall in the wheel of pain to “craft” the thrall into submission 10% faster, or something.

A cook profession could enable to eat 2 meals and get their 2 bonuses stacked for instance.

And a bard / performer would enable you to play music for your friends and get rid of 20% of their corruption for instance.

I don’t know, those are just random numbers on ideas, but I’m sure that with the professions as a start/core, players can grow branches of fun thoughts.

That you could have such motivation didn’t even cross my mind. The idea is very interesting, @E.y .
But this is Funcom. They are obsessed with grinding!

Tbh I kinda like the idea but I feel like a bit of a tweak would be needed. For example if you max blacksmith you can craft and give weapons the same bonuses as a t4 blacksmith without needing a t4 on the bench since YOU are the Smith. At the same time limit players to only 1 profession so they can’t just negate the need for thralls entirely.

I would love this.
