Right.
I don’t have a issue with the battle pass, you missed my point. My issue is with artifical scarcity on the items in it. It is possible to have battle passes maintain their value without pushing FOMO.
Halo Infinite makes battle passes replayable.
Sea of Thieves puts the battle pass items into the cash shop.
Both these games have significant playbases and valuable brands. There are multiple means to an end, I don’t want funcom taking the route that reduces customer choice.
Also, replying to every message with “That’s marketing” as a gotcha doesn’t add anything to the discussion. Having banner ads that pop up every time you’re in building mode would also be marketing and I’d also be agains that.
Cannot wait to see the introduction of lootboxes or gachas. BP merely only teh beginning, they got the FOMO down. Two more to go!
But seriously store alone would been enough, this addition of BP was unnecessary and everygame has it only to make you play the game or you lose out on progression or items, i don’t want to play games out of necessity, i like cosmetics in games but not at the costs of my sanity making me go out of my way to play the game as they dictate with these challenges.
Shame it has come to that, something i never expected from a game like this but hey, i guess it is the new trend of the suits because fork the players, milk them some more.
But that just turns it into dlc.
I thought firespark idea had merit…as battle passes retire, they are vaulted and one one item from the vault(RNG) gets placed out for sale every so often. Therefore it technically is possible to get the stuff but near impossible to do so as the vault grows.
Here are ways to do it without turning into a dlc. 1st option requires more active play, 2nd requires more spending. Either is better than making items limited in my opinion.
Yeah I think of the smoking jacket brooks bros used to offer but doesn’t now. I couldnt afford it so I didnt buy it. It might come back… maybe? But that doesnt make BB predatory. Its a shelf space thing. Imagine if FC has a lot of success with this system and there are a ton of items. To house them all in game the store will be super large and need more development for look and feel. So at that point, the developers would be reduced to maintaining and updating a large store rather than bug fixing… it doesnt cost zero to make the items available. Its just like shelf space at Old Navy, its just digital shelf space.
Hmm, I respect the way how you guys feel about it, and feelings is of course what’s it all about. Everyone want their share of happiness in Conan Exiles.
I don’t think a Battle Pass will fit in a system where you can acces the battle pass contents after the battle pass ends.
The following reasons a explain of why I think this will not work:
- There would be no reason to buy a battle pass (no one will feel the “fear of missing out”) there will be no priority when players should buy it.
- A battle pass with exclusivity will force the player to buy the pass if that really want the items, this will generate a consistent and more reliable cash flow during the time of a certain pass, they can invest more time and money in further developing the game*.
- Exclusive items will feel generic, to my eyes this ain’t fair to the player that have invest their time and money on. There will be no feel of reward with generic items which they also could have bought in the shop.
- Re-releasing content will feel more like a “quick cash grab” to me, this is a red flag.
“Fear of missing out” is a terrible feeling and I totally agree with that, but I can live with it. Everyone will have the same chance.
Its not just a evil marketing strategy sceme.
A evil example would be if they put the items inside RNG lootboxes for a limited time, only the lucky ones can get it.
This is not the case with a battle pass where everyone will have the same chance to get it.
I don’t mind if they make a variation of items sold in the battle pass for example if they make a armour with 2 variations, a good looking one and a special looking one for the battle pass.
*A reliable income will make sure we get active content as Funcom gets the income they need to further develop the game and entertain us. Even players who can’t afford any more DLC’s or skins can still play the upcoming updates, which is lovely, more players more joy!
If Funcom chooses to re-release content from older battle passes they shouldn’t begin with battle passes from the start and sell all the items in a cash shop, which is fine by me but it would kill the purpose of reason “2” listed above a “reliable consistent income”.
The battle pass will just add “some type of subscription” with unique rewards, but you’re not forced to buy it to play the new content.
The longer a player plays the more limited items they will eventually have. This is rewarding.
Don’t forget there will be like 12 free items for everyone, no one needs to buy it to get the free items (this both rewards the loyal non paying player as it does the paying player).
You feel this way and that’s perfectly valid for you. fantastic, you’ll stick around.
A lot of us don’t feel the same way though, we want to be able to get all of the content and are happy to pay for it… but see no reason why we have to keep playing forever and a day to keep up.
There are other things to do in life with our free time. Other games, movies, books, TV series… even going outside the house occasionally (I know, the horror ).
Players like us feel that we’re we’re going to be punished by missing out on content on a game we really enjoy just because we sometimes want to do something else. That’s the truth of the matter to us and FOMO can very easily turn into quitting altogether.
Just give us the opportunity to buy anything at anytime.
Are we so tired of this thread that we want it locked?
Alternatively, would someone be willing to open a specific PvP server with two clans, Fear the FOMO and Cult of the NFT, so those unwilling to engage with some civility can go dismember each other in game?
It’s good that we are all passionate about the game, but let’s try to remember how to close a page if we are too stressed by it’s contents.
There was an oblique solicitation for an uproar, so the level of fervor on display is exactly called for, but we can be better about how we express it.
Yeah I think the conversation has settled on two camps.
- is staunch anti FOMO and therefore standard battle pass tactics are a no go.
2)battle passes are a way of gaming commerce now and everyone should just get used to it.
Me personally? Not being a launch player meant that I was without the goodies of launch. I tried to put it out there that there were people that would pay for this but there 2as a sizable amount of folks that flat out said no, it’s exclusive and too bad so sad. Well I licked my wounds and dug into why I needed it so bad…it was just to be a completionist…my own psyche and envy got in the way. I stepped back and reviewed would I even use the Atlantean sword?..no. I wouldn’t. Plus would the ability to make such a weapon lessen the find I had during a raid, an Atlantean sword…yes it would cheapen that significantly. So because of those, I sit on the camp of battlepass as is because 1)you don’t need it, 2)it doesn’t ruin your building enjoyment, 3) limiting FC so that you don’t have to deal with your FOMO issues doesn’t help you grow as a person.
Yeah and this would be fine, if there is no battle pass but just items sold in the shop
I’m pretty open minded, but they shouldn’t sell a battle pass and re-release battle pass contents after the battle pass expires at the same time. These 2 don’t go together.
I too have hobbies outside playing games, or other games but I don’t mind missing out if I didn’t participate
You are right but it’s not the only way… Why no man’s sky is working so good? Why the devs maybe become millionaire and don’t want more but do new stuff? There is no battle Pass and no dlc. You buy the game and you are good. You get big content and gameplay updates from them.
Sure it’s a different game but it’s still a game and there are also devs working on it and I am sure they are not hungry.
If a company making last year 10 billion + and this year only 9 billion + then its bad for them and they need to fire people. Yeah that’s capitalism… but if my favorite pizza guy would thinking like this then his only goal could be to sell more and more and expand… But why?
I don’t want to say funcom are now the bad guys and that their strategy is evil if they want to make more money. And also I am willing to pay constantly for their good work… Just wanted to say that there are different ways and you don’t need do expanding all the time…
And I am sure the devs and community guys from funcom don’t take this decisions… Its the company behind that want more and more money and want this strategy.
I am sure if Dennis would have the hands over that you would see a fair BP without these marketing tactics.
Games didn’t need BPs before to succeed in the past, they don’t need it now. It is merely a predatory monitization just to make you spend money and stick you to the game, some people cannot let go of items that may not return in future thus Fomo scummy tactics.
Maliciously brilliant idea from suits to increase profits with the promise of “Ye but you can get back the coins from the BP you spent on the first one, you just have to play the game every day and do daily chores because your job not enough!” Laughable at best.
Feel like this is a desperate move on their part to introduce a BP.
Call them what you like, but some forward-leaning “caretaker” governments have created protections against predatory marketing practices. I think it’s a bit early to tar Funcom with that brush.
Personally I enjoy reading this as great thread in which to vent. Where it’s not so great is when we’re making judgments about other players. We’re people with our own weaknesses and motivations, so let’s open up a little headspace for that.
True dat and I wasn’t trying to belittle. I actually believe that you only grow through conflict, be it internal or external. We need to push ourselves out of safety to grow. This is more of a worldview discussion wrapped into a game from what I see.
Sadly those weaknesses they capitalize on for profits and i cannot stand for such and never will, i am judgemental for this reason alone because they know what they are doing and where are they going with it. Apparently they also have no remorse doing so.
This practice cannot be justified.
And that’s fine. What I mean is making judgments about someone’s mental state. Or inferences about their stability. These have no place here, even Crom would be offended.
LOL!
EA-2021- 5.6 Billion
UbiSoft- 2021-2.2 Billion
Quite apparent no one is listening to not use their products.
That be true - though sometimes a large banquet, catering to many different tastes, can only be served in batches so some meals are not all served as hot as planned
You are right about that.
