Used to be that during an attack animation there was a very specific time frame when you could interrupt the attack animation and dodge away. In other words, it was an intended (somewhat limited) way to get out of the animation, unlike weapon swapping.I admit, I haven’t been testing this very thoroughly recently to see when you can or can’t roll in the middle of attacking.
There definitely seems to be a pause after the katana dash attack where your character is just standing there posing dramatically, so if your target didn’t die, they get a free swing or two at your exposed back.
And yes, the reason why I never got into using e.g. hammers was the fact that once you start swinging it, you expose yourself to attacks, so you’re right that if you couldn’t interrupt the attack animation by rolling at any point, people would probably gravitate towards weapons with the fastest individual attacks. I certainly would.
I am somewhere in the middle here. I really miss the feature that i was changing tools for harvesting really fast and when a mob was coming swiftly to draw weapon. It was a feature that needed training and looked like skilled harvesting. I was proud of how fast i aim the fiber from the rock and swift to pickaxe, harvesting both without damaging each. This feature i really miss too. But it’s another example of cool stuff disappear to balance all modes.
Being able to suddenly cancel an attack animation made combos less valuable and rendered baiting useless. I remember that there was a long period of about two years where literally no one could use the mace as a counter-play to the sword lunge, because you could just cancel the lunge.
Now you have to actually lean on your moveset when fighting.
That said, roll-poke is really meh. There’s no real way to punish it and with the hyper-armor reductions the spear is the ascendant super weapon again. Great for spear-using sweaties like me, bad for overall build diversity and PvP gameplay.
I agree with this. There should be a back and forth in PvP. A duel should involve a flow. In a game like Mordhau, feinting is a legitimate tactic that opens you up to a counter-attack when spammed. In Conan, animation canceling has no downside and endlessly saves people from being punished for poor attack choices.
In Conan, weapons like the mace are deliberately designed as counter-plays. They have less mobility, but more hyper armor. You bait someone in and punish them with a burst of high damage.
Canceling just deletes that and removes a huge aspect of skill expression from the game.
It sure is nice to get some real thoughts about this. Thank you. I didn’t even think about the time to swap when farming, but i sure do every time that i have to wait for that swap lol. I just started back on pc, and i can confirm. the state of the game is all two handed rolls after every attack. With the corrupted build people are hitting for well over 600 with one roll. something has to give for sure, but for now. if you can’t beat them. join them
After reading this post, I actually looked for this setting because I’m building a server and am toying with mods/settings right now to find a good balance.
I found Stamina Cost modifier, but I don’t see Stamina Regen or anything to do with a delay. I don’t believe this setting is currently able to be edited without modding it (which I certainly could do, though I have a ton of tweaks and features already on my list to create for my server)
One thing I am toying with is a mod that introduces stamina cost or regen penalties after dodge rolling, with the penalty increasing the more you dodge in a given period. In theory, even with a perk that gives you a free attack, you’d quickly roll yourself into a period without enough stamina to roll again, giving someone an opening to counter. The mod might also feature other roll countermeasures like causing you to slip and fall flat on your face if you try to roll in oil.
Thank you! I forgot there were other settings not listed in the interface that could be edited that way. I’ll definitely play around with that in addition to my mod ideas.
that sounds awesome really. I it will be the death of pvp as we know it lol. a way to make animations shorter would fix everything i think, but then all dps has to be reworked.
