Camels are already in the game so it makes sense to make them mountable. Their function would be different to a horse however, and would serve as either a carvan animal, being able to carry more items than a horse, or either as a counter to horse mounts.
Horses don’t like camels, therefore to represent this when a horse is near a camel, it would receive some debuffs, stamina regen would be slower, say 25%, and damage delt from horseback would be lower, maybe 25-30%. The camel rider in turn would also deal extra damage to any player on horseback.
The setbacks for the camel would be that its slower than a horse, and also a lance couldn’t be used from it.
Similar to the horse the camel would be able to level up its stats and have different saddles for different uses.
I’m in favor of camel mounts, though I am not sure they would be able to keep their 30-slot inventories as a mount due to balancing concerns.
Possibly this could be resolved by making the smaller capacity mount versions craftable like rhinos, and return the old graphics back to the regular camel (if anyone doesn’t remember, camels used to have large packs on their backs), while the current graphics could be the mount version.
I am not in favor of some kind of proximity debuff against horses. It doesn’t make sense either realistically or mechanically.
Its historically accurate that in battle horses will shy away from camels. Camels have a foul odor, which horses dislike. A camel’s stench scares or even disorients horses, so they will not approach them.
Pretty much this. Horses don’t really like the smell of humans either. Most animals don’t. But domestication has a way of working through these things.
The dromedary (Camelus dromedarius) (/ˈdrɒmədɛri/ or /-ədri/), also known as Arabian camel,[2] is a large even-toed ungulate, of the genus Camelus, with one hump on its back.
I wouldn’t say no to a camel mount, it definitely makes sense in some of the locations we have in game. They’re not fast though. But they’re capable. I would say at their current stats, I wouldn’t even be against them keeping some of their pack abilities.
I also wouldn’t be above having horses get a sort of pack saddle added to them. One that increases their slots, but reduces their handling and speed. Pack horses were a thing.
But why stop at horses and camels. Could see donkeys and mules. I got quite a bit of use out of a donkey in Archeage a few years back.
ie a camel has better stamina recovery and less burn in the desert regions and add a bar or two of heat resistance. Horses do not gain any benefit in desert
In highland type regions horses would have the stamina recovery increased and less burn, plus the horse should add a bar or two of warmth while riding, camels would not benifit in cold regions.
Then have rhinos just be an all around war mount and have them work decently but not as good in both regions
