How did you manage to get a jaywalking ticket?!? Worst I’ve ever had was a scolding and that was for doing something pretty dumb.
Some towns have not much going on… the place I went to college handed them out like candy. Never got one myself but have seen plenty issued.
I’m not a morning person. Hell, I’m not much of a person at all until I’ve had a coffee, and Caffe Ladro is – in my opinion – the best coffee in Seattle. The one on 9th and Howell was on my way from the bus stop to the office, so I went there pretty much every morning. And pretty much every morning, I would cross Howell St with whoever else was there, regardless of what the traffic lights said.
On that particular morning, everyone was standing there, waiting for the light to change. Nobody was crossing the street, despite there being no traffic coming up the street. So I shrugged and started crossing. Not more than three steps across the road, a siren wailed to let me know that there was a good reason why everyone else was waiting, as a cop on a bike I haven’t seen peeled away from the cars waiting for the green light on the 9th Ave.
That was the most expensive coffee of my life so far.
Interesting cultural difference; one of the first things I noticed after moving to Japan was that (besides there being vending machines outdoors and on every corner - even for beer), no one crosses on a red. It could be the smallest street in the country and if it was red for 30min… Yep, there would be a crowd of people there waiting for the light to change.
Meanwhile, in the UK, jaywalking isn’t a crime at all - if a driver can reasonably be expected to see a pedestrian, then the pedestrian has right of way (most crossings are actually just advisory - here’s a decent spot to cross). Of course, most drivers don’t actually know the law, so it’s generally better to find a safe spot and wait for an actual break in the traffic…
I am just about to make some unique server with unique game experience, to build a lot, to code it, to pay for advertise, developers, so I want to make this job paid. It is not supposed selling game items, just selling server access. But according to the Terms Of Use it is illegal, I can’t earn money using The Conan Exiles game… I will wait for the times when there will be games where Creators can earn money on it, like in YouTube everyone can earn money. Conan Exiles is the game you want to leave in, because it gives a sense of the reality. So I fell in love with it.
I suppose these companies just ignore the fact that there are third paywall servers. And if these companies want they would sue creators of paid servers.
When you buy a bread do you send curses to bakers too ?
You should be ashamed of your way of thinking.
I am not asking about local laws, just about of Terms Of Use, may paywall servers infringe copyright or not. You are right, that there are a lot companies who provides their hardware for developing game servers for pay. In theory, this is also a violation of copyright, if there is no contract with Funcom. But Funcom doesn’t sue them as I know.
Hmm I think it’s allowed. Maybe they have a contract with g portal and it’s not allowed to be a hosting service for anyone else. But to be a server admin and hoster… Why not? You pay for it and you can take money for it.
The local law and taxes are is what you have to check.
You are not reselling this game or content of it as your own. It like taking money from people for watching TV on your couch at your home.
If you pay taxes and everything is fine with the law so why should a tv station have the right to forbid?
But at all I don’t think that this will work. You will waste money and I don’t think someone will pay for it.
What makes the difference to the current service on private servers hosted by g portal or by your own?
40 slots for 250 euro for one year. That’s not much.
But maybe you give a quarantee that your server never habe lags, bugs, any downtimes or if it does you pay the money back.
What’s the difference in your plan? I don’t understand it. I pay 250 euro on official ways to have a 40 slot server where I can install mods and many other players can get access. How much would your access cost and what is the special?
As someone else said, if you want legal advice, talk to a lawyer. No one here is giving legit advice one way another. Good advice on the subject isn’t free.
Its how it is in most states in the US. There’s a few states (usually on the west coast) that like to add a little extra tax.
You definitely can use G-Portal as a host. There’s a button in game for it. One of the things Funcom and G-portal do is Funcom advertises for them in game for people to use them as server hosts.
There wouldn´t something special to it at this point, except you need to pay for beeing able to enter the server and play and thats why I said its a rip off at the end of the day, since it greatly limits the playerbase and you do not have to pay for private servers usually. Thats the beauty of this community, that there are enough dedicated people that support the game and the community without taking money for it. Ofc donations can be made but its all volunterly. You can play regardless of having the money and will to donate. And I personally prefer that, because I do not want to play with people that think they own a server now do to their donation or because they paid for the entering. But each their own.
The modding community on steam is big, very active, supportive and creative but realisticly speaking there are boundaries to what can be done in regards to modifications. Pipi for example is pretty much maxing it out right now, at least to my understanding. So I have a little problem with the op´s statement that what he would be offering on his server would be new and unique. I can not quite believe that. And he isn´t obviously eager to explain what that would or could be exactly.
At this point I can´t help myself as to think, this whole topic is not so much about offering something specially to the conan community but to find out if there can be made easy sidemoney by offering a normal private server to people.
That’s not what I mean. There is nothing wrong with controlling access to your server. That is why there is a blacklist/whitelist function in the first place. You are the admin for your server; you set the rules. You are under no obligation to have anyone on your server for any reason that you don’t want there. How you choose to let people in is your business. Someone who owns the game can still access all of the game functions provided by funcom so you would not be violating the ToS.
One way or another, Funkom forbids making money on mods, for example. I think they will also have a negative attitude towards other types of earnings.
Mod authors are using the Funcom provided devkit and most mods are provided on Steam (they dont have to be). How you whitelist/blacklist the server you own and pay for is your business. It is no different than if you had a paying membership to a conan fan club and your members got together to play conan on a dedi.
Yeah I have been avoiding the question on if it will get any players. It would have to be a very special server experience.
Yes. Just imagine, someone made a very good role-play well-managed server with a lot of admin building, citiies, mechanisms, role play system, events etc, and that server become very famous. But every servers has hardcoded and technical players quantity limitations, so it is the best to make just paid whitelist access for 70 players. If you do not that access, so even admin can’t normally enter this server LOL, because the server will be overpopulated. I heard some servers increased limitations to 200 players. I do not know how is it possible. I think they made their custom server with a very good hardware, because I didn’t find companies who can’t distribute remote servers with such awesome hardware to maintain over than 70 players.
I am afraid that is mistaken.
He is not selling access to Funcom’s property, he is selling access to his environment.
This is akin to a bar showing a football game and charging for food and beverage and having a cover charge. The charge is not for the content, it’s for the access to the venue.
You’re not the baker. You’re the guy who’s taking someone else’s bread and reselling it at markup and claiming it’s your own.
Except, you need permission in most areas to show case said game. (most do not get it…) (which is often a separate fee. And show casing a football game from home has its own rule set.
As a Former Mod (Capcom) Selling Access to a game is a no no.
Its There Game, I can not set up multi ps4s, and a game store and have there game up. And charge per hour unlimited play to said titles loaded on systems. I need permission Via Owners of each game.
This is something I’ve had to look up and ask about (as we wanted to actually do this type of store)
As for Server Renting, your breaking TOS for Charging Access. Cause there your Making money from G-portal. (this may vary since last i’ve looked. (hence why you see alot of server list set ups for sale instead)
You CAN ask for Donations. But soon as any of it turns into Profit, it turns into a much different legal mater. Don’t buy a Coffee with the Donations, and tell people about it… XD
If I can find paper work, I’ll see if I can post it. Likely buried under year or 2 of …junk mail.
