I just tried on official Playstation US and I got the potty mouth warning!!
Yeah, I was wondering if you’re playing on single player or official. You keep posting screens like it’s nothing, yet everyone else can’t do it.
For the record, I play on PlayStation official. NA server with a UK version of the game. Nudity is still intact, but the renaming is new thing. Really new.
Think about why censorship like this happens for a moment. Companies like Sony or Microsoft don’t do them because they think its the right thing to do. They do it because of sales. When a decision to enforce censorship on titles published on their systems, or when a developer does it themselves, its done because there was a meeting involved, and the topic was what the customers want.
If they determine that enough of their customers want the censorship over the ones who don’t they will do it.
The ones who want censorship are your fellow players to the left and to the right of you. They have made the decision that they don’t want to see any discriminatory term for any reason, no vulgar term no matter the context, and they don’t wish for any term to be used that can be construed as offensive in any circle what so ever.
Yes it is getting worse and eventually there will be a list of names that you will have to choose from in video games. A constantly shrinking list as the names eventually find themselves on the banned list.
This is what the 21st Century looks like. Boring and uninspiring as movements towards using peer pressure is considered bullying and bullying is bad. Movements towards non-discriminatory and inclusive speech push so far that intent isn’t considered but potentiality.
This is a problem and situation that needs to be addressed on the socio-cultural level. You’re not going to make any headway in a video game forum.
Bullshit…
Nuh-uh, I think it’s either ESG and governments, or both. Would explain the hypocrisy of having slavery, genitalia etc showing, but you can’t have a immature name for a thrall.
It’s a bit similar to how you can’t show a nipple on TV, but having movies tv-shows where you mass murder people is fine. Same type of hypocrisy.
… and to reduce workload in their complaints department, I guess.
Don’t want to touch the point you make, that remains unchanged, just for completness’ sake.
I can safely say it is neither my municiple, state(region), or federal(national) government enforcing these things. If these companies are just applying a catch all due to restrictive governments in other jurisdictions, then I don’t really have control over that. I’ve been called imperialistic in the past, but not THAT imperialistic. Those residing in such jurisdictions will need to make the changes locally.
But what I am speaking to is more of a generalized cultural paradigm shift. Something that can be changed in a better direction, but it we need to really want it to, and really put the emphasis on it to our peers and not be afraid to voice that opinion even in ‘polite’ company.
The issue isn’t hypocrisy. Its censorship creep. It starts with upper body anatomy and then will extend to gratuitous violence and then eventually extend to any form of confrontation being censored. Instead of outdated standards such as the Motion Picture Production Code and Comic Books Code Authority being phased out, they are being built upon.
And the real issue is most everyone draws the line somewhere in matters of creation. Everyone has a different standard. So the line gets drawn at first well it offends the least. Then creeps from there.
Stop drawing the line when it comes to creative works (meaning not actually commiting harm on real people) and you weaken censorship and mitigate it nearly entirely. Though I doubt most if anyone in this thread other than myself is able to do that. Admittedly this is a position I’ve only recently taken within the last few years.
This is definitely part of it too. Especially for those publishers with less clout than others.
A camel is a horse by committee.
I believe the censorship has to do with online servers not single player. It’s reasonable even if it’s annoying. Many players in the past reported others for these reasons, if @Umborls could give us just a number of reports they accepted just for “funny” names the past year we could all understand why Funcom had to proceed in an action like it. Yes it’s an adult game and when they fix it they had in mind that we will behave like adults too. Unfortunately we failed them on this part i guess, so here we are now. Congratulations to all of us.
This level of censorship is plainly idiotic. This is a game for a mature audience. If someone plays this game, but feels offended because of one of the names above, that person should seek qualified help.
Well that’s the thing. It’s not reasonable. Reasonable would be what we’ve done for the last forty years or more. Filtering out a small list of choice words that just about everyone can agree on. Basically the handful of four letter words everyone knows and twelve year olds like to spew non stop because they think it makes them sound cool.
What’s not reasonable is filtering out anything that has that combination of letters or variations thereof even when that combination is simply part of another word or words with a completely different meaning. If someone is offended by the mere combination of letters as opposed to the actual word, setting aside the rational behind being offended by certain words in the first place, well, you’re actually not helping them by filtering those letters. You’re feeding their delusion.
The issue is the ones offended by delusions are seen as more profitable to sate than anyone else. This is exacerbated by the fact no one wants to take a real stance.
This for example, will be ignored. Why? Because there’s no reason for it not to be. Funcom, Sony, and Microsoft don’t stand to lose anything by doing so. No one here is going to stop making purchases, no one here is going to make a stand.
We’ll make a small complaint, but tolerate more and more censorship. Even if we’re restricted by a pre-set of words and phrases and can no longer have any sort of creative input to naming characters or even communicating amongst ourselves, we’ll still tolerate it.
So why shouldn’t they just clamp down further? Its in their best interest to do so. There’s absolutely zero repercussions or consequence for doing so.
“mature” …
You realize how ironic that really is when it comes to games?
This is the issue. It’s called laziness to program in any form of the words. I mean, I get it, what’s stopping someone from running a bunch of swear words and racial slurs together in one long name… but to make it so I can’t even use “grape,” that’s ridiculous. Oh and don’t get me started on less common slang and derogatory names from OTHER countries. Come on… Sheila? For real?
As an Australian that lives in Australia no body (that I know of anyway ) finds the word Sheila offensive in any way. How ever I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s the word “She” that people are probably getting offended by.
This is correct. It’s not a derogatory term at all. It is a bit boganish.
@jmk1999, this is all news to me, when did censorship start? I’ve even had my own version of Khlit the Cossack.
This is 100% accurate. Do you work for the federal government also?
Go play a game like The Talos Principle or Spiritfarer, and then maybe you’ll reevaluate your prejudices about the maturity of video games.
