I have put together Videos to get my head Wrapped around combat artificial intelligence and their behavior associated with two versus one. I have figured out this is the best way to test how the AI acts with both combatant AI and how they interact with you. I found Odyssey to be the most challenging gameplay. Although I realize Odyssey is not the same game I’m just speaking to the intelligence and its ability to flank an attack and cycle through NPC as they attack. watch the video some of the videos run on commentary a little but you can see the scenarios play out and see the systems work.
Test 1
line of sight
Spotting
Tracking
Flanking with (rerouting)
Random off-site spawn (reinforcement)
Alternating attacking from NPC
Cycling attack from range to melee combat
Perry, dodge and counterattack
Blocking attacks
Timed dropped Agro after 25s line of sight lost
looking for player line of sight lost
behavioral recognition based off of status of the faction, changes based off contribution and action
Roving patrol
Test 2
line of sight
Spotting
Facing Target

Random off-site spawn (reinforcement)
Alternating attacking from NPC

This won’t make much sense, conan isn’t singleplayer game, unless you want them to make AI run after 1 person while others are shooting arrows/throw orbs
If you want to give examples use mmos but i don’t think there is any with AI like you would want
it is a Singleplayer game and its Multiplayer but its only a 40 players Multiplayer
That argument isn’t valid your trying to say that is a Conan is something like world of Warcraft are elder scrolls online you have 2000 people on one time it there is definitely a huge difference between a 40 man server. and what you refer to and then I would agree you do need to limit the amount of that takes place
If you are just trying to learn, test with Thralls as well. You can see they use Stamina in their attacks and much of what you are seeing is Stamina depletion from AI. It also brings to light the risks you take when fighting higher tier and higher biome tier mobs. A Tier 1 Exile NPC has enough stamina to swat at you. A tier 4 Volcano NPC has enough stamina to combo you and then some.
AC Odyssey makes me want that level of AI and the mounts and the weapon display on your armor in Conan Exiles. Also the climbing that AC has makes more sense. We are not Spiderman! Look out here comes the Spiderman!!! There is no stamina though in AC. So it will never be that fun in Exiles. Odyssey is a top notch game though, very fun.
Ghost Recon Wildlands makes me want the smarter AI that will hunt you down. and call in help in Conan Exiles. Also a top notch game.
Mount and Blade makes me want mounts and nice AI battles in Conan Exiles.
Red Dead Redemption 2 has some nice AI too and is top notch. Current favorite!
The problem with most of these though are that you have no stamina bar and Exiles has this. But I agree with OP this level of AI is needed in Exiles to know when to fight and when to back off or reroute. Especially defending your base with thralls.
I have seen in Exiles though that an unbroken(on the wheel) thrall has an huge amount of stamina pool and are relentless with the attacks, especially in groups. They don’t seem to get tired of beating on me. I think that’s the way Funcom cheeses the system to make the AI seem harder, that and huge hp. These thralls don’t have weight on them or encumbrance to slow their attacks or quickly run out the stamina. Their armor weighs nothing probably even tier 4. Archers can fire a heck of alot more arrows than me at a time even with no encumbrance. The thralls also have no stats to increase things like encumbrance or strength, so these are cheesed too. They get no perks from stats either like the accuracy where you get 10% more damage and this is I think cheesed. If a thrall was just the same as a player in stats and stamina and player setup, the game would be vastly different. But the AI would need even more work!
There is no alternating attacking coming from the thralls in exiles. They straight up gang bang you. Good discussion here!
Salutations I wanted to thank you for your compliment to my original post. I put a lot of work into that easily a couple of hours. Just to get my head wrapped around what artificial intelligence does for a game. People often make the argument that because it’s multiplayer that it doesn’t need artificial intelligence and I disagree with that statement and I think another issue is people don’t really understand that the term multiplayer it is not a shoe that fits all scenario. Because most of the games that I tested in those videos are all multiplayer to some extent some of them were player Co op some of them were 4 player multiplayer. I think the real issue is people use the World of Warcraft definition of multiplayer for their Definition, Index, or understanding of artificial intelligence I just have a I just have a realistic understanding of with the game engine capable of based off some research and I realize there are restrictions-based off server load. but these can be managed through other optimizations
This is what I like to see stop coming out Dungeons. they have no re-play ability no in game content they do not develop party cohesiveness. develop the game artificial intelligence. Spend the same amount of time that they put into doing the combat animation reworks are the Bow works into the games Artificial intelligence.
I think development team has halfway got the solution right by going back and re working key systems. once they fix these key systems then the Dungeons will have relevance again.
GDC Stands for game development conference somehow, I stumble across this researching artificial intelligence. There are lots of Videos about development seminars and conferences from game publishers and developers really insightful into the industry how they speak to challenges, revenue and overall develop time/Cost.
Assassin’s Creed has a budget north of 100 million or so (probably closer to 300 million). Conan Exiles, is no where near that. If you want Conan Exiles to be like Assassin’s Creed, then, I don’t suppose you have 300 million laying around?
Assassins creed also doesn’t have up to 40 players and hundreds of player created structures per server. Nor does it have CEs crafting and all of the associated resources. Assassins creed has the luxury of combat being on a much smaller list of gameplay features compared to CE. Comparing the two is just foolish.
I am playing that as well, but I like the building here and play this game too! I like to play around!
To be clear, I would like aspects of AC in Conan exiles or aspects of Conan Exiles in AC. You know like peanut butter in my chocolate or vise versa. Assassin Creed was brought up by another I am simply adding to that discussion! What’s with the offense? I know AC is from a triple A company with pockets and the only way Funcom can get there is to start listening to what players want. This in turn makes the dough and the money train heads out!
This Guy! Again why the offense taken? Most servers do not have 40 players, most have 1 or zero. And you forgot to add one is multiplayer whereas the other is single player. Games get compared or judged all the time who are you to say it’s foolish? We were here discussing combat before you came along. Not resources or the other things, just combat. AC is the closest game to compare in some ways and I also play RDR2 but the things I like from it are further away to compare to Exiles, because its a western. It’s not too much to ask for some items from different games to be married into exiles if possible.
Nice work.
I’d be interested to see comparison videos with rockstar’s AI. Especially gta online as that’s also an online multiplayer game with a similar max player count per server.
