First, understand that combat in AoC is unlike any other mmo in existence. This is not a game where you just spam 1-2 buttons and stand in place. Because of this, PVP is more engaging and gives you more of a chance, especially early on.
Give it a shot! If you don’t like PVP from other games, then whenever you join PVP in AoC, pick a teammate/groupmate and just assist them. Do only that for a while. Every fight will feel better and you will become more confident.
Also, remember there is no such thing as a forced grind. You CHOOSE to grind or not. There is a ton of content in AoC and you do not have to rush or skip things. Take your time to explore and see everything there is. You will get to level 80 before you finish most of the zones and faster if you join dungeons.
If you see other players around, especially in cities, and you are at similar levels, ask if they want to group with you for content. This is good for early levels in the daytime Tortage areas and for anything afterward.
If you want to solo, that works too. Follow the questlines and use all dialog choices to see all quests. When you get to dungeons, there are many Lairs which are solo dungeons and then proper solo dungeons as well. If its too hard, just wait until you level up another 10 levels or so and come back and wreck face! You can also easily duo or three-man most dungeons if you have dps, tank and healer, or just a good healer, and if a higher level, it won’t matter if it’s a lower level dungeon.
Learn your class.
One thing I didn’t realize until later is on is that it can be very useful to have multiple ranks of an ability on your hotbars, as each has it’s own cooldown. For your main bar of course have the highest ranks, but if an ability gives a bleed, a stun, etc. then use the secon-highest rank on the hotbar above it and you can have procs running almost constantly. It really helps as you start gaining a bunch of ranks and each ability rank has a different combo to perform and attack from differing directions.
All the 20-40 areas have great quests, so nothing is wrong with doing more than just your specific race’s aligned zone, especially if you are not as strong as you should be. Read the forums and see guides on how you set up feats and how AA works.
I should also say that the Tempest of Set is an amazing priest class that has equal damage to most mage classes. And it is super fun to electrocute enemies! lol.
Crom is the PVE server and there are specific areas for PVP and the minigames, when busy at prime times. Learn as you go. Try out some pvp every 5-10 levels and as you get better with your class, it fight feel better fighting players.
Eventually, you can join Keep Battles with dozens of players versus dozens of players, defending or sieging a keep, using Rhinos, Elephants, Catapults and more! Epic fun for all!
All the extra content like Vanaheim, Dragon Spine, Turan - all fun, Vanaheim scales with your level after 20 and Turan is 50+, Dragon and Godslayer are 80+. But with 80 levels of content and dozens of zones in just the main game, you will have plenty to enjoy starting out.
