Crash to Desktop on loading screen, game database gets corrupted?

Crash while loading map after selecting single player from main menu


Bug Reproduction:

Start Game, select single player from main menu

Funny enough I could pin-point it to the database ‘game.db’. It worked ok before the AoW2 update and Thursday. However, since then I can pick any of my old game.db files, the game loads once but when I close the game and try to resume by loading the now AoW2-modified game.db the game always crashes to desktop on loading screen. No log entry of notice, I compared them to other logs on the forums.
It seems the update somehow corrupts the database.
I double-checked by joining an official server, which works well - apart from the known issues of the AoW2 update on the servers.
I tried to check the database files with the sqlite tool provided, it reports everything’s ok but the game still crashes.

So the current state is, in a way I can play, but I cannot make progress because the game fails either to properly save or load the game.db. This is definitely tied to the AoW2 Update, worked well before, spent 400 hours since 2019.

I’ve began yesterday, whenever I go to singleplayer and continue game freezes right after loading. Tried a lot of times. Same results.
I’ve bought the game and 2 DLC and can’t even play them proper, I am greatly dissapointed.

Thank you for your report. Please follow the steps to verify your game files:

  1. Open Steam
  2. In Library, click with the right button on the game and select “Properties”
  3. Select the Installed files
  4. Select Verify integrity of game files….

An update from my side after the Hotfix on Thursday (yes, the problem persists):

It’s curious that you mention in the Hotfix description as the very first item:
“* Fixed a bug which caused performance issues whenever approaching or logging in near a base”

Because that exactly seems to be the root cause - BUT it is still the problem AFTER the hotfix. So, either you have just fixed one aspect and there are more, or it is still a problem related to my specific setup/save game/database.
Like I said in the original post, I can circumvent the crash by using a game.db older than the AoW2 update, that always loads and I can play. Getting the tip from your “Fix Description” I tried logging out/disconnecting/quitting the game outside of my base and it worked. I could load the game after restarting the game. However, it led to the same problem again when I logged out at a new tiny test base.
Looking into my Saved folder I can also see now two additional files next to the game.db, named game.db-shm and game.db-wal, which are technically related to the sqlite technology… So, I wonder if somebody from the Funcom Support Team can shed some light on the situation because obviously the issue is NOT fixed and I’m afraid there won’t be any other fix once the issue "is addressed " as stated in the Hotfix. Logging out outside of the base is very counter-intuitive and is another step in destroying the immersion of the game. And the price of failing to do so is high, I loose all my progress when I accidentally log out in my base.

Bem vindo… Primeiro entre no menu e coloque o gráfico todo no mínimo e desative todos os efeitos para que possa ver se o jogo está iniciando, mas calma não é para jogar no mínimo ou gráfico baixo. Se funcionar é por que você estava usando uma configuração errada…

Assim que o mapa carregar dentro do jogo após criar seu personagem configure o gráfico e volte para o menu em seguida entre novamente que o gráfico irá ser o mesmo que você configurou.

Se tudo isso não funcionar abra um ticket para o suporte em zendesk

OK vamos lá… Não sei sua idade mas se lembrar de como era um CD de jogos já vai ajudar a entender mas sim está corrompido pois você fica alternando os jogos salvos, então algo deu errado ao atualizar um save o outro não está portanto é o mesmo que você salvar o CD1 em seguida tentar usar o save no CD2 não irá funcionar e se funcionar vai congelar por falta de informações… Resumindo não tem o que fazer você mesmo já mencionou sobre o jogo está funcionando bem em qualquer servidor o problema está em seu save ou game.db que foi atualizado porém não foi atualizado o game.db que você quer jogar “antigo” não foi atualizado como se deve :relieved:

Olá, o problema é parecido com o do colega, o jogo só congela quando carrega um save, se eu fizer um char novo jogo sem problemas.

Obviouly, we all can just assume what exactly happens when the crash occured since nobody from Funcom actually comments here on the issue.
I saw at reddit an announcement that the “infinite loading screen” as some people call it will be fixed in an upcoming Hotfix 2. When you browse through the forum you will encounter a lot of threads with people complaining about the “infinite loading screen” issue from other updates.
So, my point is just that I try to reason about the origin of the crash and my intention is getting the Funcom developers faster on track to fix the bug. I’m pretty sure it is about how updates introduce new items in the game thus how these new items are coded in the sqlite. From my own experience in software engineering and sqlite in particular I know how hard it is to make a viable upgrade path for versions that exist out in the field for a long time. It is even harder to test, it would require careful planing in the development of the database file and evolution of the types. My impression is that none of this exist at Funcom, the game software is brittle, it crashes as soon something mildly unexpected happens, like loading a mod where a resource is missing. Obviously you could just write handling code that just rejects the mod and loads the rest but no, CE just crashes most of the time.
I was enthusiastic about the game and also about supporting a “small” game studio, I bought the main game, Siptah and some DLCs. But alas, I feel like I’m done with it. It’s just very poor coding, rushed features that break the lore, break basic game mechanics and what not.
Sorry, I may come back when Hotfix#6 arrives, maybe.
I’d wish Steam would offer the possibility to just stick to a version. I’d pick the one before AoS was introduced, because AoS broke Siptah in terms of game balance, but they don’t care anyway.

Post a log with the crash please.

  • Right-click the game in Steam, select Manage → Browse local files
  • In the folder that opens go to ConanSandbox\Saved\Logs
  • Get the ConanSandbox.log file after a crash without restarting the game and attach it here in a post (as it would get wiped on restart and renamed into a timestamped version in the same folder, which would also be fine as long as it contains the crash)

Oh… so it’s not an actual game crash, but more like the game just vanishes without errors or anything, right? No fatal error message box etc.

That’s typically characteristic of an unstable system. For example if your RAM isn’t quite capable of handling the XMP profile it shipped with on your system, or other overlocking related problems.
It ofc could be other stuff too, like driver issues etc, but those would typically give you other error messages or system crashes.

When a process unexpectedly dies, that’s what usually is called a crash, at least what I heard.

“Unstable system”, cannot really agree on this. I can play titles like GTA5, Skyrim, Cyberpunk 2077, AOC without any problems.

And really, compared to Cyperpunk, CE’s visuals are a joke.

Minimum requirements of CE have not changed since AoW2 so I guess my system with 32 Gb RAM and a RTX should be well within specs.
And finally, like I mentioned in my initial post. I can play online, joining official servers, so I’d be rather surprised to see single player mode would require much more computational resources.

Sorry, but I cannot follow your suggestion. Unless you can present some evidence that led you to your conclusion.

That matters very little, a slight instability in the system will be unnoticed by 99% of games, but there might be 1-2 which will react to it… and it has nothing to do with the performance requirements or the graphics of the game.
Again, it has absolutely nothing to do with resources used or system requirements…

Nobody said you have to… You are the one who posted here looking for help with very little information to go on. I mentioned that one of the possibilities that would cause this is a slight system instability… because I’ve seen this exact thing happen with various random games (in every single case every other game ran perfectly fine) and downclocking the ram or bumping up the soc voltage a bit fixed it… or in other cases slightly downclocking the gpu.

You could very easily temporarily disable your xmp profile in the bios for starters to test… it’s not like you can’t turn it back on afterwards :man_shrugging: But if that’s too much effort or you don’t know how to do any of that then, that’s fine.

If you don’t want to mess with that though, then at the very least you should check your windows event log after a crash as it might contain slightly more info than the game log… or idk, post a database, see if anyone can replicate it if you think that’s the cause (though I highly doubt it as if anything from that would be crashing you would get a regular fatal error with a giant message and the game log containing it)

I’ll repeat it in English for anyone with the same problem:

Once the main menu is reached, in the Settings, set the graphics to ‘low’ and load your single player game. The loading will succeed, once you can see your character, you can switch back to whatever profile works on your machine (I can choose ‘Cinematic’ with no problems).

Switching back and forth between loading the save game and actually playing is a workaround for now.
But the root cause is definitely a bug in the game. Wasn’t necessary before AoW2 came out, at least on my machine.

You can load a game with Coop enabled? it loads correctly? mine just freezes upon loading the save and I have to restart the system because it doesnt let me close the damn game.

I’ve never tried the Coop mode, so can’t say anything about it.
The mentioned workaround is also not a silver bullet, there is still some randomness about the game.
Usually, when I start the game first time after booting the system, I can’t reach the main menu because ‘Logging in to Funcom Live Services’ goes into time-out after about 1 min and the game crashes to desktop without any notice. I have to wait some minutes before try again, then I usually reach the main menu, do the settings and then load the single player mode.
I know the offline mode, but for some reasons the odds are much lower that the save game actually loads than in online mode.
All in all, it is not a ‘real’ solution or satisfactory state, but at least it is sometimes usable - until Funcom releases the next hotfix, for better or worse, who knows…
