The game was running fine but since installing the latest Nvidia graphics driver I am repeatedly crashing out to desktop.The same thing is happening to a friend who also plays swl and also only since installing the Nvidia driver.

Same here!! Except that it did that with the last two updates for me. I’ve gone back to 465.89, and it’s working great. Don’t know how it would be for you.
The last NVIDIA update changed swl from directx9 to 11 automatically if you use GeForce experience. Check options in the launcher and switching back to directx9 should solve it.
