Discussion Thread: Age of Heroes

yah, heroism is certainly open to interpretation and can mean different things to people. i just looked up the world on wikipedia and i like this:
" A hero (feminine: heroine) is a real person or a main fictional character who, in the face of danger, combats adversity through feats of ingenuity, courage, or strength. The original hero type of classical epics did such things for the sake of glory and honor. "
a hero doesnt have to be save the world or be ‘the good guy.’ a hero can be someone whose exploits and deeds are worthy of song and praise in the mead hall. speaking of songs, the icon for the musician thrall has been in the devkit for years, and gone unused. could be that we will be able to hire a bard through the tavern to sing generic songs of a hero who has done great deeds in the exiled lands, and we assume they are singing about us. obviously funcom isnt going to customize the songs for an individual player character.
someone else suggested we could hire conan or valeria, i hope that’s not the case. the player needs to be the hero.

guys, make sure you bring those important topics on their stream, i believe we need answers. and if there is something else you want to ask, that you feel is important and not in the list, i could add more items.

Personally, I’m going to be watching the stream to see the new content they’re adding. Fixes should be an unstated expectation; they won’t waste a dev stream showing fixes, that’s just terrible marketing.

I think they will ignore all the important questions about game breaking stuff… as usual.

But hey! Buy this overpriced toilet paper with CC printed on them, and feel like a real hero when taking a dump on the new broken porcelain throne !!! :poop::crazy_face::joy:

if we keep asking,m people will notice they are ignoring it, and that alone is a response to it. there is too many people stressed with funcom latest actions or should i say the lack of.

if i were them i would have done a stream early next week to handle the current issue, because there is no way they will be able to get away with just promoting the new age with how things are right now.

Lucky for the rest of us, these streams are geared towards everyone - not just the vocal minority. Content is what attracts the average player to check it out, not someone blandly reading itemized patch notes for an hour

Absolutely right, they should have admitted their failure.
But how they handle CE will directly affect dune, FC seems to not understand that.
Nor the fact that gamers talk to each other online.
I would be really happy if they put things right in the next stream, but i have low expectations.

If nothing changes they have to learn it the hard way with dune being a bummer.

I’m guessing it will have something to do with some kind of thrall system revamp (so players can be heroes of their own story) and/or new events and quests. But I could be way off base here. :man_shrugging:

Personally, I’m not as excited about the prospect of new content as I am about the possibility of using the new age to make the existing content better and doing so in a thematic way. I hope I’m not being too much of an optimist.

I remain cautiously hopeful. With the emphasis on “cautiously”. At this point, my trust in Funcom has eroded to the point that the mixture is 95% caution and 5% hope.

Eh, not necessarily. The info we have so far is extremely generic and vague. “Age of Heroes” could be taken in so many different directions. Who knows, maybe you’ll get to be a heroic Beastmaster as part of what they’re planning

I believe it was both. The release cadence was something they simply couldn’t keep up with, and as a result they had to cut too many corners. Their QA outcomes have never been stellar to begin with, but they got worse since the Ages started.

I’m not optimistic enough to believe that the new cadence will make things better than they were before the Ages, but I’m hoping we can get back to the old levels of jankiness and lack of polish, rather than the extremes we’re seeing now.

There’s a rather unorthodox definition of hero that I picked up from “Endymion” by Dan Simmons, and I like it a lot:

I don’t pretend to speak for others, but that’s why I love playing video games, because regardless whether I behave as a hero or a villain in classical terms, I get to be a “hero” in a way I can’t be in real life

I don’t think we need Funcom to “show fixes” or even to promise fixes. But the so-called vocal minority is having issues playing, issues that are often literally game-breaking, and whether they’re a minority or not, they deserve to see their grievances acknowledged seriously.

By that I don’t mean the usual corpo-platitudes along the lines of “we’re aware of your problems, we’re working on solving them, we appreciate your patience and wuv you so much”. And I definitely don’t mean continuing the status quo of silently ignoring issues when they’re brought up in Q&A.

I mean a brief overview of what they intend to do to solve those problems and how they intend to communicate better with the playerbase. If they do. Which would be, you know, nice.

Sadly, I think you’re being way too optimistic. I like to think of myself as “not dumb”, yet I jumped into Conan Exiles without doing any thorough research into Funcom’s history and how they handled Age of Conan. In fact, I had fond memories of The Longest Journey, so I was already predisposed to try a new game from Funcom.

True, Conan Exiles taught me that maybe I should do a bit more research in the future, but I’m believe I’m a minority. I don’t think most people will bother to investigate as much.

On top of that, I got literally thousands of hours of fun from Conan Exiles. The fact that they turned it into a thing I don’t want to play anymore sucks, but it’s not like I regret the fact that I spent some money on it. So even being a cautious minority, I’m still not as negative as I could be.

I’m pretty sure the average prospective Dune player won’t give a damn about how Funcom (mis)handled Conan Exiles.

TBH, and it jurts saying this, @Jimbo did not mean minority as minority in actually experiencing the issue, bit minority as in vocalizing the issue very well known issues. And that is correct. Many never come to forums, happy or mad. So a whole stream just about it would be a waste.

But on your side they need to at least weave it into the marketing stream.

hey @biggcane55 , that is not what i understood, specially coming from someone with a track record of justfiying funcom for everything they do wrong. *i ll stop here.

there are serious issues plaguing the game that needs answers, it affects everyone, and i am sure even those who has remained silent, will appreciate funcom dealing with those issues, they have promised (i lost count how many times) to improve on the communication aspect, we are not seeing it. if they were more responsive and more comunicative with the community then it will be no need. but ignoring issues at every turn does send a message that in my case i do not like and appreciate. .

please allow me say that i am tired of the large number of unresolved issues, and they absolute lack of communications.

best regards.

This might be off-topic, but I just want to call out they communicated about the BattlEye issue in the context of the upcoming weekend: BattlEye timeout issue - #4 by Dana

It’s not something they normally do and the fact that they did it represents a positive change. Let’s hope it’s not a one-off and they’ll keep it up.

they did it several days, later i think it was on wednesday? ill check,

the issue started last friday, but yes, i do appreciate the communication ieven if it came late it is better than no communication.

It’s not dumb to trust a game developer you know nothing about my friend.
We know there is no such thing as a “perfect game”.
Everyone has different preferences, every player has a different play style.
And not every game manages to get all mechanics polished.

But that’s fine as long as it works properly.

I also didn’t do any research on FC, and i honestly can’t tell you how this would have affected my choice.
I also don’t want to be this “paranoid” and do research on everything just in case there could be something wrong.

But even as a guy that is still around, i think i learned something, in the future i will do better research and watch footage online.

… And i won’t touch Dune.

It’s difficult to predict what will happen, and overall we have to wait how it goes.

But i watched angry joe‘s reaction to the trailer, and even though he was pretty excited for it, Alex and him admitted CE and how FC screwed up there.
Never mind the comment section.

… so i think players are much more aware of such things than a few years ago, and got sensitized to it in some way.
Simply because we had things like Anthem or even CDPR screwed cyber punk up, what heavily damaged their reputation as a high quality developer.
… but of course i could be wrong and i’m just biased. Who knows :man_shrugging:

That’s a very good point that I didn’t consider. I hope that you were right and I was wrong. It’s not that I want Dune to fail, it’s that I want the consumers to hold companies accountable for their bad behavior.

It seems pretty obvious what this new Age will bring: tough challenges that grant exclusive attributes or status to the players who manage to overcome them. These challenges could be in PvE, PvP, or maybe even both.

A few questions come to mind:

  • Can you become a hero by simply buying items from the Bazaar?
  • Are heroes only defined by the weapons they wield and how good they can use them?

But my wishful thinking, fueled by a tiny shred of hope, wonders:

  • Will heroes be followers more powerful than legendary warriors? True weapons of mass destruction, defending the realm with the bravery of a real hero? Will heroes be those followers who break through the level 20 cap and unlock heroic powers? I doubt it… but one can always dream…

Cool where’s my ferret?

If i have something to hope and anticipate here is the fact that makes all the warriors heroes! And this fact is no other than a truly heroic action that saved the day but the warrior died.
I am waiting permadeath since day one in this game. If permadeath arrives we will finally get a real survival challenging game.
But it’s just a dream, worry not, it won’t come…

Somebody’s got a fragile ego. Let the record show who derailed this thread about upcoming content first.

Let’s get back on track, as the topic is about this:

I think the update will be more centered around enhancing and further customizing your character, including religious boons and finished corrupted attributes. I’d also like to see some kind of “heroic” perks for 60+, akin to something like Fallout 76’s legendary perk cards

All of these would be tools to make your character more unique to your playstyle, and enhances rp. Like it or not, RP players spend far more money and account for a larger portion of the playerbase than pvpers (vocal minority).

If you need me, I’ll be in my “crap hole” with the other 17,000 people having a healthy discussion about what we’d like to see instead of regurgitating statements on what we hate ten times a day

i dont know, what they are planning, but i am really worried of signficant changes to the game, we all know how that went with AoW, we will have to wait and see, and again there is the question of the non existance QA and how good or broken the new changes will come,

i honestly look forward for a coherent team of people who can really work in a organized and serious manner with focus on those bugs.

i do feel they really need to address the concerns that has been poping up for quite some time. and are still unanswered.
