Bug Description:
Falling through foundations in my base
Bug Reproduction:
Random
Lately I have been falling through solid objects such as the foundations of my own base. Or, coming online and being stuck inside my bed. The work around is either remove the foundation you are inside of, or remove your bracelet and respawn.
I have a picture of where I just died, inside my base. See attached *.jpg. In this case I could not remove the foundation I was inside of, I had to remove my bracelet.
EDIT: I had already been online for quite a while. In this case it didn’t happen when logging in (although I have seen that happen as well).
I don’t have summon corpse yet. But that would be a good method that prevents me from having to dig through the foundations of my base to find the right one.
I have had the same thing getting stuck inside my bed when logging in. Removing the bed didn’t help, had to remove my bracelet. There I do have summon corpse but I respawn at my bed right next to my corpse. I have started going offline in a different part of that base.
I usually build my bases on ceilings and pillars (remnant from the way purges used to be). I figured using foundations might fix the problem. Unfortunately not.
When I am logging in to a server, base or not, 3 things occur at random:
• I can hear me falling for a very long time during the loading screen
• It loads quick and I watch as I fall through the world and under the mesh
• Sometimes if I am in a base while loading in, I am stuck at the bottom of the base while my bed is high up as I usually log off near it. This is after I fell through the entire base.
On occasion I can actually walk around either under the mesh or at the bottom of my base. If I pull bracelet, roll, hit ESC and back out, it corrects my position sometimes. Other times I can pull out tools and walk around but I can’t interact with say, an elevator or follower, but I can climb.
I think these problems are connected. If I were to guess the game is having a hard time in determining position and for some when the loading is done it’s an approximation: so end up in a foundation.
Now with all of this said I do experience these issues more frequently in a base. It doesn’t matter how small, built up or decorated it is either. I can also log in on bare ground falling through the world.
I have experienced the situation when logging in I am in the room under my bedroom (often between the pillars of my base on ground level). As you say, I can walk around but cannot interact with anything. After a few seconds it will normally pop me up to where I was supposed to be.
Yes, I have seen the long fall through fog followed by an “UGH” by my character and then I am where I was supposed to be and everything is find.
In this case I already was logged in, going about my business inside my base and suddenly I was waist deep inside a foundation. Previously I was able to get free by removing the foundation but in this case I couldn’t find the foundation for the menu to grab onto.
Correct, I had been logged in for quite some time. I had just come in from somewhere, walked over to my furnace to put something in it and next thing I am inside the foundation. Not sure if I had pressed “E” on the furnace before this happened.
Foundations not being behaving as solid surfaces when you log or when you just reached a place by teleport or death is something that happens since the game was launched. Some foundations (like insulated wood) it happens more often than others (stone one).
Have tried to mod fix it for a long time, but every update breaks the mod fix for it.
To have an idea, in dev streams the people not even mind that happening, because it seems they already embraced it as an emergent feature:
This is actually a new bug introduced in Chapter 3 (yes, similar things sometimes happened in the past, but never to this degree)
I think it’s related to the same “optimization” feature that culls roof / ceiling pieces when you’re not looking at them etc… not sure thou, they did appear at the same time… so that’s how it seemed, that it’s an overly aggressive optimization system aimed at consoles.
Basically if you place a bedroll or anything inside a building, you’ll often end up under the landscape while loading in during a teleport… it was never this bad in the past and yes, thralls seem to be more prone to sink into foundations etc.
This sounds plausible, it being a result of that optimization change. And yes, I have had to pull my thralls out of the floor on more than one occasion.
What do you think the chances are of this getting fixed?
Well… the developers have been notified of it. They’re aware of all 3 of those things (sun shining through your roof when not looking / players falling through solid things when teleporting in / thralls sinking in foundations)
I do have the beta downloaded but I haven’t played on it enough to be sure if it improved, so I guess we’ll see in a few days But I’m hoping it did get fixed.
I’ve been building with fence foundations and ceilings for a long time. This is the all-around best way to go imo. It’s helped a lot when cutting down on materials, increasing design diversity, and particularly when this bug showed up.
I looked on the beta yesterday and I spawned inside a foundation in front of a bench. I had to destroy the foundation to get out which took out one bench with it.
So unfortunately, in the beta at least, it’s not fixed
Dipped in foundations is not a new or “optimization” problem.
It has been around since day one, the devs on the video mention as much.
Some of my mod “learning curve” for many features come from the many fixes I used to avoid it. I have learned a lot in the times when modding primers and other resources did not even existed, in the search of a fix for that precise problem.
