Feeding converted thralls

So I recently converted a thrall and have him follow me around. Its pretty clear to me that you can change his weapons and armor ,but I have a doubt about his diet at the bottom of his inventory. Do I have to give him food when I’m out exploring with him? I gave exactly the diet shown but it keeps disappearing…

What about the thrall pot? I had him guard a lesser wheel of pain and it was far from my base or thrall pot but the moment I went back to check who it was feeding to it said it was the thrall guarding the wheel… So thralls dont have to be near the pot?

Can someone explain me this part of feeding converted thralls?

Feeding thralls is completely optional

Thrall pot has a certain radius (and it’s quite big) - if thrall is stationed inside the radius he will receive damage buff - indicated by a fist icon above his health bar (this icon is visible only if thrall is in combat)

If you want to go out exploring with your thrall you cant put food in his inventory and it will receive the same damage buff

Oh so its not necessary for his health? In other words he wont die of hunger or thirst?
