FPS spikes, low GPU/CPU usage

Basic Info:

Platform: Steam
Issue Type: Framerate
Game Mode: Online Private/Singleplayer
Server Type: PvE
Map: Exiled Lands
Server Name: none
Mods: None/Steam Workshop::Nakkisoturit aavikolla

Bug Description:

FPS spikes outside spawn desert. Having mods makes the issue worse, but no single mod seems to be the culprit. Problem appeared after a year of hiatus and a new GPU (RTX 1060 → RTX 2060). During spikes neither GPU or CPU usage is maxed out, nor is RAM. Temperatures are normal. Noob river has moderate spikes, and highlands slightly worse ones. I also have random crashes maybe once per hour, no crash message (but that is not really bothering me.) FPS spikes seem to get more common the more I play. I have usually a stable 60 FPS, but it lowers to 30-45 during spikes, which occur mostly when moving and looking around. Building and buildings cause them as well, though that is to be expected? The latest performance patch did nothing to the problem. I have not encountered similar problems in other games. The game is playable, but gives me motion sickness in the long run. I also would expect it to run smoothly with my new GPU.

I also noticed that my client log is full of this warning, which is spammed multiple times per second:

Log warning

MeshComp:Warning: GetBoneMatrix : ParentBoneIndex(0) out of range of MasterPoseComponent->SpaceBases for /Game/Maps/ConanSandbox/ConanSandbox.ConanSandbox:PersistentLevel.BasePlayerChar_C_0.SkeletalMeshComponent_65

I made a thread in Reddit as well: Reddit - Dive into anything

Specs:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 1600
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 6GB
RAM: 16GB
Windows 10

I have tried the following:

  • No mods (lag spikes don’t drop fps as low, but the problem is there)
  • Low and Cinematic graphics, low-end laptop mode, windowed and fullscreen (no effect)
  • Changed NVIDIA control panel settings, for example prevent energy saving (no effect)
  • Updated drivers
  • PC doesn’t use energy saving

My own speculation:

  • Something to do with RAM? More mods = more RAM usage
  • This GPU model somehow just doesn’t work correctly with the game. I have seen other similar threads with this particular model.

I have recorded some performance logs as well:

Bug Reproduction:

Spawn in game, run out of spawn desert. Move and look around.

Do you’ve the game installed on a HDD, or SSD drive?

I suspect the spikes at the highlands and down near noob river are not precisely related. From what I’ve heard over the years (grain of salt here), noob river area has a longer view distance because of the wide open terrain to the south, southeast which causes a drop (I’ve seen this myself in the past, exacerbated when its heavily built/modded) and the highlands has had an issue near the bridge due to what is likely one of the encounters. The highlands area is probably getting looked at closely because its a newish problem from an encounter (system effects due to the harsher weather aside). The noob river area though is probably just the same ol limitation unless there is also an encounter nearby. One way to kind of figure out if its map or your system having an issue is to load one of the fully custom map mods and see if you have the same issue since they dont have the encounter system in place (bearing in mind they may have other issues that cause a fps drop) or load siptah and see if its the same, better or worse (I’ve always heard people say its better).

Lock your FPS.
People tend to let their framerates run wild, which is both bad for your hardware, pointless and also provides a much worse experience in games like these where sudden changes in FPS will be much more noticeable.

So just choose a nice value, lock your FPS to that. The interface only allows you to do it in super large increments, ideally you should just lock to 60 which is allowed, however should that be a bit too stuttery when rotating in good areas, then I find a value of 75 is pretty okay for the most part, you can set up values that aren’t available on the interface by editing config files.

To set up unconventional values via the config file you can:
Right-click the game in steam, select Manage -> Browse local files.
In the folder that opens go to ConanSandbox\Saved\Config\WindowsNoEditor\
Open Game.ini and under the [Settings.Video] category add a new line with maxFPS=75 and save the file.

Other than this, Hosav’s UI is known to cause massive FPS problems in populated areas like Sepermeru etc because of the way healthbars have been changed in 3.0. To minimize the issue while still using the mod you can just go to your Server Settings and reduce the healthbar visibility distance, cuz it’s set to some ridiculous 15k by default.

That’s one thing I haven’t tried yet, I’ll check other maps tomorrow!

Thank you for your reply! I have vsync on due to an old monitor, so my fps never goes above 60. I have tried unlimited fps, which still has the same spikes in addition to screen tearing.

I don’t use Hosav’s UI mod.

I get spikes no matter what the view distance is. Even with lowest settings fps drops intermittently.

I tried Siptah. It is better than original map, fps stays above 50 almost all the time, but it doesn’t seem to remove the underlying issue. There is room for better fps, but neither CPU or GPU is using all they got to keep the fps at 60.

Are you playing in 4k on ultra or cinematic? A 2060 may not hit 60 under those conditions

Currently my settings are medium, some high. Even low settings don’t affect fps in my situation.

I was able to stay at ~60 FPS, on almost all Ultra (tuned down foliage to High, from what I recall) on a 1660 Super, so the GPU should not be an issue, IMHO.
Not sure how it was with a R5 1600, though on a R7 2700X (& 32GBs of RAM) - like mentioned above, no trouble other than the GPU fans spinning wildly in high foliage areas. The only other thing I could think of is to check, if anything doesn’t eat up your memory usage?

Even in 4k? I would try setting to 1080p and see if that makes it hit 60. 4k isnt really recommended for less than 3000 series cards.

Sorry, I use the native resolution. High graphics is not the problem here.
