As Character Transfers are currently disabled, I think plenty of people would be happy to see a new cluster of servers launch alongside the Age Of Sorcery Update!
Any word on this as a possibility?
Also, any updates in regard to character transfers in general?
However a lot of games implement new servers alongside major updates as a lot of players tend to want that fresh re-balanced experience.
As for server costs, near half the official servers could be merged or outright removed to make way for a new cluster as most are completely dead or have but a single player on them.
Funcom literally just culled hundreds of servers (see list here). As @Taemien pointed out, I don’t see them adding any new servers in the immediate future.
To sum it up, they did what you proposed and what many were asking for before: they merged a bunch of servers with other servers, based on usage statistics, and it provoked a shitstorm of epic proportions.
They even implemented character transfers so you could pick up (most of) your stuff and transfer to another server, and turned off the usual restrictions for those character transfers going from a server-to-be-merged to a server-to-be-merged-with.
Granted, the character transfer was buggy which made some people lose all of their stuff, and the communication about these unrestricted transfer was never good enough and clear enough so people were never sure if it was better to move before the merge or wait for the automatic move.
Still, even so, the whole process was implemented and executed as reasonably well as you can expect from Funcom.
But none of that really matters, that’s just context I wanted to give you.
What I’m referring to is the fact that people on these forums have been using “there are plenty of empty servers, they should merge some” argument for a long time, to the point where it seemed like it was actually a popular idea.
But when they did finally decided to do it, people ended up flocking to the forums in droves, furious about the merge and saying things like “who even asked for this”.
Picking up on where The Mage left off, I had/have toons on several servers that would either be merged into, or themselves go extinct after merging somewhere else.
That said, all of these servers are a heartbeat away from full dead. There was a little resurgence for a time, but it’s otherwise over. Many of my pals have asked for me to come back and fight the current goonies, and that was 5+ weeks ago.
It might be nice to have some of these more dead servers merged out, and then started over from scratch. New DB. That would totally rule.
I can see the outrage, I also incorrectly assumed the last merger was a couple years ago.
I can also see the hesitant nature of not wanting to merge additional servers due to previous outage however upon reading the post they’re very clear this will be a repeated practice going forward.
I understand every game and it’s audience is different but this is a relatively common practice and whilst however unlikely to implemented it is often only opposed by those unaware that it is an optional fresh start.
I still stand by a few new servers being added, even if only a handful as I know myself and extended friends are super keen to drop into 3.0 but always concerned with the re-entry when sweaty Alphas destory sandstone to maintain their power trip.
As for anyone that has an existing server, especially a populated one, you could simply not join the new servers.
If you’re on PC, you have a multitude of options of starting your own server. You can literally have your cake and eat it too.
On console you have G-portal, which isn’t any better or worse than officials (since G-portal hosts them too).
You can stand by your opinion all you wish. But at the end of the day, that doesn’t convince FC to actually invest. Servers aren’t free. And just before you protest against this argument, I am not telling you to do anything I’m not doing myself.
I understand Community Servers are always an option but unfortunately they come with the burden of self administration or the risk of biased administration.
It’s a rather simple request, and is common place for most other games that feature large updates or overhauls. I also understand servers cost money but not only can this be offset by removing dead servers this update includes a new method of monetization.
I’m not having an argument per se, and I can respect if you don’t agree with my opinion about addiontal servers, but outright opposing something that doesn’t even affect you as the servers would be optional to join is odd.
Oh come on! I just started getting my feet wet with rebuilding!..but yeah I know it’s coming. 2 clans that are built up but their stuff is decaying so that only 3 bases are left. 2 other solos here (1 noob doing noob things like building a base around the iron deposits underneath temple of the bat and 1 has some skill in hiding but messed up the vertical case base with foundation anchors instead of pillars)
What the OP is asking for is unreasonable considering Funcom just finished culling a third of their servers a few months ago. What @Taemien suggested is a reasonable alternative.
You get a new server. What’s the difference? It will be just as full or empty as a new official. Hell you can even call it an official with a made up number if its that important.
Not all discussions are about arguments. This is a discussion about reality and options. In this case the options you have available aren’t exactly that hard. I’ve been a server admin in Conan Exiles for about 4 out of the nearly 5 years I’ve played the game. It doesn’t require any crazy knowledge, you just have to be willing to learn from mistakes and have a decent morality and ethic. Don’t do anything for yourself or a friend you wouldn’t do for a stranger for example.
And the reality of the situation is that you will likely see more server closures and merges. Unless for some reason on Thursday the population doubles (probably needs more). There’s still a bit more than a hundred empty/quiet/inactive servers.
You have the information. You can decide to do something with it. Or you can stick to your opinions. Choice is yours. The difference is, after this discussion, you won’t be making a choice in ignorance.
Ehhh, no. Each time Funcom has released new servers, they have been populated for quite a while. The two times that come mind was Siptah release, and the actual game release. Due to full servers they got more. It may have happened in EA as well, but Im not sure, we didnt server hop back then. Will they do it now? No, I cant see it after they axed 375 servers this spring.
I’ll say this, there’s a bigger chance of more server merges unless the existing servers fill up on Thursday. Cause if its looking like this on Thursday:
