Funcom can still turn this update around and add some real magic in there

Having played AoC, I have to say that those modders understood what players want and how the idea of fun should look in a video game. Then I watched the “magic” that Funcom advertised in their trailer for 3.0 and it looks underwhelming.
Conan Exiles already has offensive magic in it.
Avatar of Bokrug - “The Avatar will fight by either sweeping its tail, stomping or casting a highly damaging fireball-like spell.” - Conan Exiles Wiki
Krllyandian - shoots a giant laser and so on.

I’ll let the screenshots from the live version of the game speak for themselves.

As you can see offensive spells are already part of the game. Any variation of these spells can work for players as well and they will feel like shooting a bow in terms of balance.
I haven’t read the books and I couldn’t care less about magic being canon. I’m here to have fun playing a 3rd person survival building game and right now it feels Conan Exiles is missing a great opportunity with this update.

Note: I know what was said about the books and how E. Howard portraits magic in the universe he created, and I don’t really care. Lets not turn this topic into a flame fest with comments from people who have nothing original to say “but muh universe…blabla”

Lets just add magic projectiles made of star metal and call them hallowed bullettes while we’re at it.

I’ve already said my piece the last time you spammed this exact thing so I’ll be brief;

No, your ignorance of canon doesn’t mean they’ll ignore it as well. You are not the center of the universe.

na we don’t need people shooting fireballs like some dumb mod has.

You’re welcome to your opinion, but I doubt you’ll find many who agree with you for exactly that reason.

Canon aside, it’s also a (relatively) original way to do magic, and in all honestly there’s plenty of games featuring fireball-flinging, lighting-arse mages already. In fact, probably the vast majority of games featuring magic has that version of it. So artistically speaking, what they’re going with here is way more interesting.

Sounds like what you want sits squarely in Modding territory.

Everyone knows that I am.

I sincerely hope not

I agree, that would be a horrible idea. I am not even all that keen on the magic they are bringing in but will have to wait to see how it works first.

I wouldnt be apposed to maybe adding a firebal spell or a lighting strike to a fully corupted person, it shouldnt be too devastating though…

Id like to see more offensive based spells for raiding more though, maybe a ritual to call a meteor strike on a base or something… like a trebuche but more powerful and more prep work with a casting time

For defensive purposes, maybe a poison mist generator of some type that you have to build and refuel with certain reagents periodically(i suppose that would be more alchemy) but think of the mist of poison around the sorcerer lady from tortage in AoC

Yes, they are. Have you noticed what all of those have in common? They’re cast by monsters.

Turn it around and it becomes “let’s not turn this game into another D&D derivative for people who don’t like original takes on gameplay ‘but muh fireballs… blabla’”

It took me awhile to get sold on sorcery. :+1:

Fireball magic can be done with explosive arrows. The rest is aesthetics.

Sure. So if it’s just aesthetics, why not add new arrows, crafted through ritual sorcery and imbued with dark magic powers? Why does it have to be fireballs and lightning beams?

Magic is slow and therefore not effective in combat. I like that. Now I can see buff magics or effects magics but flat out fire balls and the like…the connection to the other realm(s) would be too great. You gotta be born in those realms to learn that stuff…
Meaning, it shouldn’t happen for a player character.

Don’t get me wrong. I think rituals to mask you base should be a thing with this. Illusions, confusion magics…all fair game and one I think would be ideal for Canon as well…the mage gets in your mind.

Off topic…Conan Canon is only a swap of two vowels…just humorous thing that hit me.

Not really. It’s just what people keep bringing up. Case in point: the opening post talks about fireballs and giant lasers.

I’m not as much of a lore expert as Jimbo, but it sounds good to me.

Another thing that sounds like it could work is some kind of “pain reflection” spell: a portion of damage you deal to me will be dealt to you.

Or a kind of a “familiar link” spell: if I have a familiar link with my follower, then a portion of damage it deals is applied as a healing to me, but a portion of damage it receives is also dealt to me.

I don’t know, I’m just throwing ideas here, so that people don’t feel like I’m totally against combat magic. I’m not. I just don’t want pew-pew magic.

I want all these things… just NOT in Conan Exiles!

Because that’s what they said they would NOT do. So now some people want it. It’s like telling a kid: “Do not press that big red button”. You just know they’re gonna press it. Same here. “We will not be adding fireballs and lightning from fingertips.” You just know that some people are gonna start begging for just that.
