Game Freezes all 5-10 minutes

Game mode: any
Type of issue: Crash | Performance
Server type: any
Region: any
Mods?: No
Edition: Steam

I am reporting for a friend whose PC freezes every few minutes. Sometimes it will continue to work after about 30 seconds, other times he has to kill the program. First, it happened in co-op where the freeze also lead to a timeout and disconnected him. But he has tested it in solo and official servers as well.
Prior to the trouble in-game, he had trouble getting it started. After installing(purchasing) Siptah he had a fatal error every time he starts the game. It could only be resolved by deleting the entire conan_sandbox folder and verifying game data in steam (resulting in a 105GB download).
What we have tried so far:

  • verifying game data in steam
  • updating drivers
  • lowering graphic settings (GeForce experience optimizes the game to ultra settings though, so it shouldn’t be a performance issue)
  • checking the GPU and CPU for heat issues via the Fan Control tool
  • trying another PS controller (don’t ask me why he insists to use it on PC)
  • … and some smaller things I can’t remember.

Any chance somebody has a clue, how to get rid of the freezes?

I am sorry - since I have in 30 years of PC gaming and solving about 300 game-related issues not once encountered an issue related to the hardware, I sometimes forget to answer this commonly asked question beforehand. (This sentence is actually not meant as ironic as it sounds.)

It is a Win10 64 bit PC with a GeForce 1060, 24GB memory, and Realtek HD onboard audio. At the moment I don’t know the exact number of the CPU but it is an elderly intel chip.
The game runs on a 4k TV (running on HD though) with HDR support. Atm, we are trying to eliminate HDR as the issue, since we have encountered a similar problem with HDR in Warhammer: Vermintide.

Windows and HDR are indeed evil. Whether or not that is the source of the problem, I recommend disabling it either way on Windows. (Conan Exiles for it’s part technically has HDR support, but it has to be force enabled via an ini edit. I don’t recall where or how off the top of my head).

We used a tool that disables HDR today and had no freezes the whole evening.
I am not certain, it is because of the tool though. We will see. Thanks so far!
