In regards to PVE. What do people recommend these days? I hear Guard is superior in survivability and aggro, but for me they seem rather boring. How does Conq stack up to them these days?

On conq you need to work harder for your aggro, but if you play him well you can compete with a similar-geared guard. Maybe not, if gear is below t4, since guard has many aggro-tools which work without good gear.
By having up to 2 bubbles the survivability of conqs is good enough to tank all dungeons and raids.
And a conq can go dps, if his tanking skills are not needed at certain encounters.
In T5/T6 I’d say you get a bigger payoff learning how to Conq properly, than playing a guard.
