my base is plenty accessible yet for SOME reason purges keep spawning BEHIND my defense walls, causing my FAVORITE tames to end up dying because the game is stupid.

Purges attack one structure. If your walls are a detached separate structure, they don’t count as your base but rather an obstruction for the purge to spawn inside. Redesign your walls
even if the walls were built first? cuz its kinda impossible to do since my base is in a hole but the walls are on a small cliff
That could be the issue too. There has to be a clear… clear to the game, path to the center of your base. Built on a mesa? In a cleft? On the water? I’d like to say if wild life can wander through your base, but…
Personal I wish purges were an option on the public servers. I build out side the purge zone now because i am tired of my bases being leveled due to purge bugs and pathing issues.
If the antelope can walk through my keep every time I open the gates, why is the purge spawning in side my keep, on the second floor 
It doesn’t matter which were built first. If they are not the same structure, then as far as the purge is concerned, you have two bases, not one.
Not if they are build close together.
Purges love flat sandstone pieces, try to build a simple sandstone foundation plattform in front of the base. It doesn´t have to be big but it must be big enough to let them spawn on top of it. Surround it with stairs so they have access to it from all sides.
I don´t know the layout of your base so there is no guarantee that this will work, but I guess its worth a try.
Let me know how it went. If it doesn´t work post some pictures so we can see the layout of the base. Maybe we find another solution for your problem.
