Haha thanks to @Nihilatr’s post, and having recently reset my Steam Achievements via console command, I was drawn to The God In The Bowl. You get this achievement when you put a thrall into the wheel for the very first time, and she was a Stygian! :twilight zone music:
I immediately sought it on Gutenberg, and enjoyed it. Can’t believe there’s so much in the story: Arus (hype-man of Mitra), Khitai, Aquilonian stylings, climbing, my main man Set, etc. Great reading for a rainy after-breakfast tea.
The Red Sonja created by Howard didn’t belong to Conan Hyboria and never appeared in his stories. It’s other writers who did bring her in Hyboria at Conan’s time.
As for Belit, the drawing is a betrayal of Howard. She’s a shemite. There’s no way she can have those bright blue eyes with such fair skin. The usual look for shemite in Howard’s stories is dark hair (and dark curly bear for men) with dark eyes and olive skin, basicaly they look likes Babylonians or Assyrians. And as the Queen of the Sword Coast I’d expect her to look more a women able to fight and less like a teen boy wet dream fantasy.
I quite liked Momoa’s Conan. A masterpiece of modern cinema? No, certainly not, but most movies aren’t. Solidly entertaining, and I do have a bit of a man-crush on Momoa, so there’s that.
Unfortunately for you, that’s how Howard himself described Bêlit - as a fair-skinned beauty.
“On the raised platform on the bows stood a slim figure whose white skin glistened in dazzling contrast to the glossy ebon hides about it.”
“She was slender, yet formed like a goddess: at once lithe and voluptuous.”
My guess is that there were two castes of Shemites, like in ancient Egypt - a ruling caste of fair-skinned people, and the lower class with darker skin. Bêlit boasts that her fathers were kings of Askalon (the greatest Shemite port city), lending credence to this theory.
Do note that she was a leader - a goddess to her men - not a warrior. She wasn’t described as leading from the front. She carried a jeweled dagger, which sounds more like a decoration than an actual weapon of war.
Also, she was described to be wearing only a belt and some jewelry. So a “Bêlit outfit” would only be possible on platforms without compulsory underwear.
Yeah, first time I saw I laughed hard hehe, I think Momoa fits better in Conan role than Arnold, at least comparing with the HQ’s, of course Arnold will be always the original Conan, but Momoa did a good job, a pitty we can’t say the same about the movie, the only good part (btw awesome scenes) is the start when he was a child.
I’m really happy with how this has kicked off I was curious as to how many would really be into the story side more so than the game, or how many were attracted to the game because of the stories :P, so many people know there stuff
i have had a good bit of time to research an do some reads myself =], I’m awaiting my payday to make an order of the book collection, I’m still in search of the time to sit and watch both the movies, between usual life and my child, and running my server, I have little time and many desires hahah.
I Came across this, and have been forever since wondering why it is over 150 pounds to buy lol, there is no indication as to why it is so much on the website its displayed on o_O, I was assuming it is a first edition or something, regardless It must be quite the book!!!
i see the discussion about he looks of conan in the game it is a bit wierd, when compared to his true appearence, it makes me wonder if maybe they had no choice but change him slightly due to copyright or something, i get its Conan, but its Funcoms Conan right :P.
i feel playing as arnie or momoa would be a bit much to haha
Well, I read the story a few weeks ago, and if I remember correctly, Belit was wearing even less than you see in that picture.
She does not need to fight, although she can, the men who are falling for her are fighting for her
Because Gnome Press released a limited supply of this and similar books, many of them only reaching first run. This is a collection of what several reviewers call “heavily edited” or even “doctored.” It does not surprise me that the slipcover depicts him like this, considering the market at the time. $3.00 US original price.
The original artists back in the 1930s very rarely got Conan’s looks right. I don’t think they got to actually read the story before publication, but rather got a vague description along the lines of “a dark-haired hero with a sword” or “the King of Aquilonia, imprisoned”. The appearance of the muscular half-naked barbarian became the norm with the comic series.
It’s worth mentioning that in the books, Conan was quite often wearing more than just a fur loincloth and boots. He preferred a mail shirt and steel helmet, especially during his mercenary days, and stories like Queen of the Black Coast and Beyond the Black River emphasize the importance Conan’s armor has when compared to Conan’s unarmored opponents. In Black Colossus we see Conan wearing the plate armor of a general, and as a king he wore full plate armor.
But we also see him wear an unlikely selection of colorful silks during his pirate days (e.g. in the Black Stranger, The Pool of the Black One), or various warm-weather clothes during his days in the Eastern hills and mountains (in People of the Black Circle).
Hmm. It seems the word “black” occurs pretty often in the titles of Howard’s Conan stories.
