I played TSW fairly heavily back when it went B2P and I was able to get through most of Egypt (where I stopped playing) relatively easily because I used a razer naga for my attacks. Due to a car accident ten years ago I was left with only being able to use one arm/hand as I only have limited use of the other. I was wondering how playable THIS version of the game is for someone with limited motor range mobility/etc… I remember trying it when it was in one of the beta rounds and I struggled so much trying to avoid aoe while aiming the combat rose at enemies while staying in range to do damage etc… and getting exceptionally frustrated with the key layout. Is it adjustable? Would I still have the same issues?
I play Star Trek Online and Age of Conan just fine with my setup, but I’ve had to macro things and hotkey other things to make it easier for me, as examples.
I would think with some keybinding that it should be possibly. Important for combat is your move ment Keys, dodge, gadget and 6 active. After a certain point, there is an extra ability, which isnt something you will have to use.
There is no lock on for targeting, which might or might not be something that takes time to learn.
Other Keys you will need often is F and X, for interaction and sprint toggle. For the sprint you could get the auto sprint mod.
Guess the best way to know, is to try it. Hope it works out for you =)
You might have great difficulty being able to move and aim while engaged with combat-- and doing both simultaneously are integral to the gameplay. Since there’s no target lock, you have to aim in the general direction of your target to hit them (player-based area of effect spells notwithstanding, which just require a target to be within the radius of your spell). And to keep you on your toes, there is the occasional spell to move out of. Perhaps if you strive for a sturdy build to mitigate the damage dealt from these spell casts and equip abilities that don’t require a target to cast, you can limit how much you need to move and absorb the spell damage from enemies without worry.
I don’t have your restrictions however I was very much a keyboard only player in TSW and SWL brought a lot of adjustments. That being said I configured it so that for casual gameplay I would only need to use the Keyboard. However for fights requiring high movement utilizing both the keyboard and mouse is almost necessary to maximize performance.
I’m not sure if the extent of your disability would need this but there’s a charity called Special Effect who were set up for this exact reason. You could get in touch with them and see what they could do.
I think in a lot of ways it might be easier now. Since there’s no target lock, there’s no clicking or tabbing to the proper target. Just aim and shoot. (This might be the only case the reticle system actually does some good.) And with a gaming mouse with a ton of buttons on it, you can bind everything there. Movement would be the only thing that would have to be done elsewhere. There are plenty of gaming peripherals for people with disabilities that could resolve the movement issue. Foot pedals and such work particularly well for WASD.
I’m aware there’s specialized hardware for those with disabilities, but I thought it was worth mentioning that aiming and movement could be a problem nonetheless. I don’t know what kind of equipment the topic creator has or would be willing to buy to make this easier to handle.
It’s worse that TSW. Unlike that, STO or AoC, SWL now uses forced recticle action combat, i.e. the most stressful aspect of the game is flat-out designed to force using keyboard+mouse.
I honestly don’t see a path toward successfully working around that limitation for one-handed play, as I don’t think you’d be able to precision move and precision aim at the same time.
If the mouse has 12 buttons under the thumb (mine does, though not a Razer), I’d imagine binding movement keys to the mouse would be possible. As it is, I only use 1 - 6 under my thumb, I’m pretty sure I have map and inventory bound to the “Up” and “Down” arrow buttons beneath the scroll wheel, and I have F set to a small button next to the left click button. With nearly 20 programmable buttons, I could potentially play from the mouse by itself, if I wanted to.
SWL has less hotkeys than TSW did (2 fewer active abilities, only 2 extra item hotkeys you’ll need instead of 5) so that’s 8 combat buttons instead of 13.
If you’re playing one handed it’d have to be the mouse, keyboard is just not up to selecting targets in swl, they move faster than you can keyboard turn. So I guess you’d need 5 for movement (jump + wasd) 6 for combat and then a shift button to switch functions for potion + gadget + mission items. (LMB + RMB are not remappable and can only hold 1 attack each unfortunately so you’re sorta stuck there)
I was right handed, until I lost my right hand. You can learn to adapt if you want to. I use keyboard only and don’t raid or do much group content because I’m also 57 yrs old with slower reflexes.
What I was describing isn’t even specialized hardware. The foot pedals I’m talking about are used by all kinds of people for all sorts of reasons, many of them are not for disability. I know someone who uses them for audio recording to start/stop/pause recording so he can keep his hands free. They’re also readily available virtually anywhere you buy computer hardware and peripherals. Simple pedals that can be pressed forward or backward. You get a pair and you can bind one of them to W/S and the other to A/D. Paired with a mouse you suddenly have the same full range of movement that any one using a keyboard and mouse has.
I still have use of my left hand but it’s somewhat limited. With that in mind, what I’ve don with an MMO mouse with 15 side buttons is keybind everything necessary to the mouse (skills, forward movement on mouse scroll, gadgets, potions, jumping) except WASD movement. I use strafe left and right and the mouse to turn so I only need to press one left hand button at a time and played well that way.
So if you get some foot pedals to take place of the WASD keys then map Alt to a button on an MMO mouse, SWL should play OK. That would probably be useful for all kinds of games.
ETA: If it’s your left hand that you still have, I imagine SWL would play OK using a gamer keypad, the kind with all the useful keys in one place and a thumstick on the side. Unfortunately left handed MMO mice are like unicorns.
Is super easy to play with one hand this game i can heal or dps up to e9 with one hand, for tank i think is more hard but e4 and nye1 is easy to tank with one hand, i didnt try to do an e5, the only problem you can get is incendiary grenades but you can quickly click the left mouse button for that
mostly I only use the mouse to get the chest reward
just use the arrow keys to move and the skills in numpad 1,2,3,4,5,6,7, .is my gadget, /is my potion and - is my sprint, remember unselect doubletap dodge i dodge with shift + arrow
