How to fight NPCs?

I played the game when it came out, stopped playing after about 6-7 months, just come back with some friends to do a PvE server and the humanoid NPCs are now immune to stagger, and able to stagger you with a single hit? I die like 15-30 times a day trying to fight human NPCs, whereas before I used to be able to clear the whole northern part of the map without using more than a stack of bandages. Is there a reason why the NPCs turned into battle gods?

NPCs are pretty easy… once you get their tactics the counter(s) are obvious. Staggering them happens for me with every heavy 2H weapon. But staggering is only useful if you’re fighting toe-to-toe he-man style which isn’t very intelligent without very high vitality and heavy armor. There are more than a few smart and effective tactics depending on the weapon, armor, and attributes your character uses - so others will probably have other suggestions as well.

But for me I like a build with very high vitality and strength and mixed armor (serpent gloves, wolf head and chest - and then just whatever for the pants and boots - as is needed). Then instead of going toe-to-toe I kite them toward myself in a semi-circle or arc path, roll-dodge to the side (toward the center-point of the circular path) just before they lunge, turn around and whack them in the back of the head with a light attack or two - repeat till dead. I like great swords and 2H hammers for hand-to-hand because I’m usually fighting more than one guy and the swooshing swipes of those weapons is a wide enough radius that I can hit 3 or 4 at a time. The 2H hammers also knock them down 2 out of 5 times so I can then do a heavy attack on the group while they’re down.

If you’re lower level and need an advantage till you get leveled then fight on horseback. Either keep the horse moving in circles around them taking swipes at them as you do (hopefully with a poisoned club or mace) or charge them with a pike or lance - running through them, doing a U-turn, and repeating. This works against tough bosses in the open as well.

Other “advantage” tactics include using your horse or a thrall to draw their aggro while you whack them from behind.
