Hyborian Magic ideas

First day playing Conan Exiles and I LOVE IT!!! I’m super happy to see that you stayed true to Robert Howard’s work unlike some companies (looking at you Disney! :-)

Anyway! I would really like to see magic brought into the world (Someone else brought this up already I’m sure). I don’t want to see any fireballs or anything because that would brake Mr. Howard’s lore horrible! But I also don’t want to see everyone being a sorcerer either. Make it so costly only the dedicated would want to be one. But make it powerful enough that a group would want one with them.

Sorry. I’m being super vague but I’m not really sure about everything but having corruption being the power source would have to be a must. I was also thinking maybe having your skills halved. So if you have 10 in vitality it would only be 5 and so you wouldn’t get the first perk thing either. spells like blind, light, and cripple would be powerful but not game breaking (I don’t think so anyway). Magic in Hyboria is terrifying. And sorcerers guard their magic close so it shouldn’t be so Skyrim or D&D like. If you want to learn spellcraft, you have to give up everything for it. Using magic would also be drain health and stamina.

Sorry for rambling but I really love the idea of magic and I love the way Howard had such awesome laws for it in his writings. Anyway! Love the game so much and I can’t wait to see what else you come up with! Thanks!

Welcome to the forum,
I think you got some lovely ideas

There is a tiny bit of magic in the game in form of necromancy, but I think there’s still space for more.

Maybe even summon a flying night creature by sacrificing half of your already drained life.

Ohhh :open_mouth: that’s a good idea.
You can only use magic when you are afflicted by corruption. Which then gets used up.

I feel there are too little corruption sources in Siptah. :joy:

Oh forgot about that. :joy:

Thank you. I haven’t made it that far. I watched my friend play it and said 'OMG need that game." I’m not even past the river when you first start out. I just love magic and Howard’s work and SO glad they haven’t ruined it.

I thought about it costing corruption. Kind of like mana in most games (I so hate that! But that’s another topic). Howard describes magic in Hyboria as a very ‘corrupting force’ so maybe instead of costing corruption it increases it? (Yeah I just took your idea and reversed it. Thanks for the idea.) He (Howard) also says that magic can kill the caster so that’s how I came up with the idea that is drains health. Maybe using less health the better you get but I don’t know. Thank you for the idea even though I totally flipped it around. :slightly_smiling_face:

The magic topic has been brought up Ad Nauseam. However, I like the ideas. Especially with keeping to established lore. The mechanic itself would be easy enough. The creation of special skill tree would be another. The easiest way would be to convert the “Barbarian traits” into “Sorcerous Powers” When you make the shift to being a sorcerer. That would negate the idea of halving the skill tree, and instead, erase it completely. Food for thought.

I’d totally be ok with a new skill tree. It could be harder to play as a sorcerer but I think that’s kind of the point. Having powers or spells instead of the normal skills and having increasing them means more powerful and longer lasting. Perks give special bonus to the spells. I really like the idea of the new skill tree. Thanks! I like the idea!

Don’t bring up Conan with Arnold. That was, is, and always will be, one of my all time favorite movies. I know it’s not lore, but it was great.

I don’t know anything about the movie. But yes. Tattoos and markings are great ideas. I don’t know anything about game mechanics. I’m more of a philosophy nerd than a computer one lol. So if I say anything that would be game breaking. I just know what I want in a game so. :woman_shrugging:

The Other by Lovecraft is probably my favorite. Poe, Lovecraft, Walking, Howard, Tolkien. There’s not a lot of writers like that too much anymore. Sad, really. About the lore; Funcom has done an amazing job sticking to it. I’d rather them not have a sorcery system then to muck it up.

@Totenmeister @Einherjar
LOVE all of these! Poe and Lovecraft are a yes! I have all their works and would love Funcom do something with the lore in them. If they did half as much as they did with Howard’s Conan it would be awesome!

Totally not on topic but whatever.

I kinda like this idea.

Replacing perks you gain from attributes based on whether you’re a sorcerer or not. This way sorcery wouldn’t simply just be another tool everyone has.
