Yeah, because I can clearly prevent everything in the game giving me a 100% victory each time. Lol If thats the case lets just give them hyper armor 100% of the time. Yea? Still think it would work? If you had nothing good to say then just keep it to yourself.
Or you can set it up to cause instant death for either you or your enemies.
I have run this path before and it is brutally unrealistic.
I’m not going to sugar coat it.
It’s up to you to make changes for either more realism or more super-hero fantasy.
Those settings are at your fingertips should you decide to make that choice.
As far as I’m concerned, keep your suggestions to yourself.
This game has been screwed up enough by too many superstar wannabes.
It is later.
Fixation on realism, especially for the combat system in this game, is misplaced. The game is not meant to be a HEMA simulator or such. It’s built around the stories about a near super human warrior in an era of gods and monsters.
If we focus on what the soft weaklings in our modern waking world are capable of, we will have completely missed what is realistic in the context of the setting.
But even if we want to focus on verisimilitude, we run into an issue.
An issue most people won’t comprehend because popular media (be it live action or animated) pretends that armour is paper maché.
This one has trained and contested in armour. It is significantly utile, both in preventing injuries and in sapping the force of a blow so that it has less impact.
But even without armour, some attacks are higher commitment, but also cannot be just swatted away.
Point of fact, there is a maneuver called a stop thrust that explicitly uses the uninterrupted momentum of the enemy’s attack to impaled them. Not stop the attack, because that’s not how a hit from such a weapon would work.
If we want to go down the route of realism, it invites a thousand and one complications and nuances that may be more than the system (which uses attack patterns that vary from okish to absurdism) can handle.
That is why this one asked to steer away from applying what we find realistic in modern times, when precious few of us have held a real sword or worn real armour, much less been in a real fight.
Considering that the original problem of the OP was being outnumbered, and trying to find a solution to that, I don’t think it’s off-topic to discuss the possibility that perhaps dying to being gang-banged is actually an intended feature in the game.
Yes, Conan was able to beat multiple opponents on several occasions. He was also described to “move like a panther” and similar allegories. He did not just stand still and face-tank his opponents.
Similarly, mobility is the key to survive being outnumbered in the game. It’s quite possible to defeat quite a number of opponents as long as you retain your mobility and don’t get stuck on the scenery. Our protagonist is not Conan, so expecting us to perform as well as Conan is unrealistic, but we can still beat seemingly overwhelming odds by playing smart.
Unfortunately this does not help thralls because they’re idiots and let themselves be surrounded. At that point it’s up to the player to manage their engagements in a way that the total number of adversaries between the player and followers is survivable. If you send a thrall against five opponents and are unable to help, you deserve to lose the thrall.
As noted, we cannot move like panthers.
We cannot move very well at all. At least they scrapped the mandate that we use tank controls, but mobility in game is still an issue.
When we couple this to the attack animations, well, it becomes clear what weapons we are supposed to use.
The weapons with wide AoEs are deliberately bait to get the player and thralls killed because of how slow and easy to interrupt they are.
But even beyond that, with the roll being the only valid defense (no parries, and shield blocks are only selectively effective) that means we should all be wearing light armour so the current micro burst asthma stamina system doesn’t leave us dead in a ditch. And that’s before we even begin to acknowledge the lag and performance issues that further punish many weapon types more than others.
“Playing Smart”.
By smart you mean skulking around, sniping, backstabbing stragglers. Exactly why this one plays a game called Conan.
Yes, very fun.
Not that craven assassination shouldn’t be an option on the table.
Just that it shouldn’t be the only option.
Why in the cluck even make move sets that are obviously wide swath AoEs of we are not supposed to ease into melee?
Half the weapon types on the board shouldn’t be trap options
In short, dying to trash mooks may be a current deliberate decision in the game.
But it’s an insipid one.
I don’t know if this is a PC vs. console thing, or keyboard vs. controller thing, but I’m not having trouble moving around.
I’m mainly using medium (mostly for the stat boosts from the Skelos Master outfit, rather than the minor increase in damage reduction over epic light), and stamina is manageable. It comes down to understanding when to perform full combos and against what, and when to poke and roll. Ie. playing smart.
Even Conan resorted to this when the odds were against him.
On this, we agree. Greatswords, for example, should be better at crowd control. Weapon designs in general seem to be based on some abstract philosophy of “game balance” (and largely failing even that) rather than making sense.
What I don’t agree with is the OP’s proposed solution. I would rather not see combat devolve into stationary button-mashing with lucky breaks for those who manage to get themselves overwhelmed by numbers.
Unfortunately dodge is more or less the only defensive manoeuver we have in the game. But that’s what we’ve got. Using it saves your life. Not using it gets you killed. If I could choose, I’d rather have more defensive options than try and remove the need for the one we have.
