So this is a really long time ago now (almost 3 years) since it was changed but not a day goes by when I’m playing Conan again that I miss the old spear attacks. Before they got changed it used to be my favorite weapon in the game as spears are one of my favorite weapon types in most games and they look cool. I know 3.0 is supposed to be a big update so maybe could we get some spear changes and bring back old light attacks? New light attacks does have its use, but in combat its just super lame, I basically only pull out a poison spear because being stationary is nice to poke knocked out thralls I don’t want…lol.
Maybe a more in depth suggestion but if its possible a cool thing to do would be have a new combat UI to specialize in some weapons and be able to choose different attack variations. Just a thought.
For those who don’t know or remember, I found this video with the old spear attack animations shown.
I feel you Aramis. Spears used to be my go to weapon in the earlier days when I was in a pinch, but nowadays, I seldom ever use them. While they may still be one of the strongest weapons in regard to the PvP aspect of the game, from a PvE/Singleplayer standpoint, they are now one of the worst performing weapons in the game. Their damage is in most cases lower than all other two handed weapons, they seem to have absolutely zero hyperarmor as they are super easy to interrupt, and they now lack any kind of area (group) attack for of we are engaging groups of enemies. The likely outcome if we attempt to engage the later with a spear is to simply be stunlocked to death.
The old light animations just felt more fluid and intuitive, and they had the area attack to make them viable against groups of NPC mobs. On top of that, the animations just felt more satisfying.
the old spear light attacks were cool, kind of a shame I really want all the spear has to offer, maybe they could replace the spears kick with the stationary poke and reintroduce the light attacks.
Sadly tho, all weapons are attack and roll weapons now. Most weapons have to slow attack animations. Spear especially, and with the small amount of hyperarmor it’s almost impossible to land a full combo.
I dont get why they do hidden changes to the spear animation. I think they slowed the combo down like 3-4 times already if not more. Latest is the gap between 2nd and 3rd, and 3rd and 4th hit in it… when they removed the abbility to unwield/wield.
It feels like they dont think people will see they changed it.
I don’t PvP, but I’ve found combat to be improved actually when they made thralls have immunity from stagger locking. I don’t find it too hard to get a full combo in on most weapons except against certain enemy types that do not stagger at all, like bears. Though I think this is more about AI than it is about weapons/combat. Better AI would also mean combat could be improved.
I don’t think Funcom takes suggestions but it might be neat to try out combat where dodge rolling does not interrupt a combo and instead you have a set amount of time before it would reset? Like 2 seconds or something, enough time to regain control from a dodge roll and hit attack again, might be neat.
I think the old spear light attack, or more specifically, one attack from that combo, should be made the spear’s special attack instead of the generic kick.
I think every weapon type should have a unique special attack that provides a different form of attack (AoE, knockback, or shieldbash+stun) to get you out of a pinch, and the kick should just be the one for unarmed.
This one does enjoy the utility of the new moves, but they are almost absurd when performed with one of the “spears” that look more like Glaives.
Perhaps a moveset for polearms different from the point stick attacks would be viable.
We already have two great axe options.
Katanas and other weapons have been later added. This could be an opportunity.
Not saying it was perfect though, but I prefer the fast paced combat over the 3 seconds we now have to wait after great sword heavy attacks for example.
I suggested a while back (probably a long while back) that the old spear animation could be reused if they introduced quarterstaff weapons in the game. But admittedly, some spear/pike type weapons in the game look like pollaxes, glaives and other medieval polearms.
Human NPCs use shields too. When they randomly figure out how it works.
Maybe a sideways shove with the shaft? That’s one way how a spear can be used when an opponent gets too close to poke effectively, to push the opponent away and then quickly follow up with more poking.
